Mornings are usually calm. The thermal builds late in the morning, from around 11:00, and runs strongest through the afternoon, roughly 14:00 to 17:00, then fades toward sunset. Breakfast tells you nothing here. This is the El Gouna daily pattern rather than a measurement at the Moevenpick launch; centres in town open around 09:00 and ask for the last session to end about half an hour before sunset.

The spot

The wind at Moevenpick El Gouna is the Red Sea thermal from the N/NW, side-off at this launch and gusty where it wraps around the hotel buildings, so the KitePeople staff launch and land you and a boat covers the deeper water. The water is a reef-protected lagoon: flat and shallow in front of the station, then a deeper channel that gets choppy.

Season and water

Come March to November; June to September is the strong core, winter is rideable but cooler and less reliable. The reason to pick this beach over the northern centres is that you sleep at Mövenpick Resort & Spa El Gouna and walk from your room to the lockers and the launch, no tuk-tuk to Mangroovy every morning. Low tide is the thing nobody mentions: sections of the lagoon go very shallow, the coral and shells come up to meet you, and foils or long fins may have to wait an hour or two.

Best for

The launch is small. It suits learners, riders working on their first jumps and anyone with a non-kiting family in tow, since diving, snorkelling, restaurants, golf, marina life and cable wakeboarding are all within El Gouna; there are no waves here, so if that is what you ride, skip it.

Rescue

A rescue boat is kept on the water whenever the station is operating. What it costs and how far it reaches are not published, and depth is the limit that matters: in El Gouna a rescue boat can only work the shallow lagoon at high tide, and outside the reef in deeper water it comes to you within minutes. Ask at the briefing which of the two you are riding in and what the tide is doing.

Get the KitePeople beach briefing before your first session: launch zone, learner/freeride split, rescue cover and low-tide limits change day to day.
Check the tide table, not only the wind; at low tide the coral and shells are the main risk and foiling or long fins may be out.
Let the staff launch and land you: the sand strip is small and the N/NW wind gusts off the buildings behind it.
Wear reef shoes if you will walk at low tide or cross the coral and shell sections towards the second lagoon.
Outside June-September pack a wider quiver: 6-15 m covers the spot, and 12 m is the common size for an 80 kg rider.
In winter bring a full wetsuit or confirm rental neoprene with the centre; in summer it is lycra or a rashguard and a lot of sunscreen.
