April to October the thermal is strongest and arrives nearly every day; November to March it is weaker and the session leans on the prevailing northerly instead.

The spot

Mangroovy Beach is El Gouna's northern kite beach, and the riding is run through the stations rather than off an open public strand: you register, you pay for the beach, and in return you get staff to land your kite and a boat that comes for you.

Inside and outside the reef

Inside the reef there is a flat lagoon of more than 2 km2 you can stand up in, which is what makes this a lesson and freeride spot; outside the reef the water gets deeper and the wingfoilers and stronger riders go there.

Wind, tide and season

The wind is N-NW to NW, side-onshore from the left, and a normal main-season afternoon sits at 15-25 kt. Tide runs the day. Low water can drain parts of the lagoon and move everyone behind the reef, so ask which zone is live before you rig.

July looks like the peak month and is not: it measures lower than June, August, September and October. Come for flat-water progression, freestyle, wingfoil and family trips; if you want waves, this is the wrong coast.

A nearby station logged a 14 kt average from the NW over 2015-2017. The more useful local measure is the rideable day, defined as 12 kt or more for at least two daytime hours: about 77% of days across four years of on-site station readings, and about 68% of winter days.

15-25 kt on a normal main-season afternoon, gusting to about 28. Winter days run nearer 12-18 kt. Averages that include every hour come out lower because the mornings are calm.

Clean side-onshore N-NW at the beach, direct and steady rather than gusty. Tide and the day's active riding zone still change, so check both before you launch.

Standing depth

Yes, over a very large area: a standing-depth lagoon of more than 2 km2 runs straight off the beach, with the first 50 m reserved for launch and landing rather than riding, and deeper water outside the reef for wingfoil and experienced riders.The neighbouring private lagoon is knee- to waist-deep over sand for roughly its first 800 m. At low water and around full moon the standing area shrinks and parts of it dry out.

Tides

Tide runs the day here. The shallow lagoon changes by about 20-70 cm on a roughly six-hour cycle with two highs and two lows, and the range depends on season and moon phase. In summer around full moon parts of the lagoon can be left with almost no water for two or three hours, and riding moves out behind the reef into deeper water.Winter usually holds a little more water. The active zone is chosen for the day's level rather than being fixed, so ask before you rig.

Deep water rescue

KBC keeps a rescue boat that reaches deep water outside the reef within minutes; inside the lagoon it can only run at high tide because of depth, so at low water help arrives on foot rather than by boat.

Coverage terms

Kitepower runs three rescue boats during opening hours with no guaranteed response time and the same low-tide limitation. Cover is tied to being registered with a station - the fee that buys beach access is also what buys the rescue - and beyond roughly 1 km offshore riding is at the rider's own risk.

Registration and access

2026: KBC requires kiters and wingfoilers to register in advance at the office to use the private beach and its services, even with their own equipment, and asks for at least VDWS Level 3 for kitesurf rental or Level 5 for wingfoil rental, or a skills test.

2026: KBC charges independent riders about EUR 14 for one day, EUR 92 for seven days, EUR 158 for fourteen and EUR 215 for twenty, covering beach access, lockable storage, rescue boat and beach-staff oversight.

2026: KBC reserves the first 50 m for launching and landing and reserves the area north of the centre for lessons.

Kitepower rules

2023-present: the posted Kitepower terms set opening hours of 09:00 until sunset with no kiting outside them, launching and landing only at the water's edge with assistance, no kites flown on land, no jumping or riding close to shore, VDWS/IKO right of way, gear not left on the beach more than 15 minutes, and riding beyond roughly 1 km offshore at the rider's own risk; rental requires proof of IKO/VDWS level 3.

2026: Kitepower publishes no separate day rate at this beach - access comes through courses, rental packages or the Kitepass.

Taxes and regulations

2023-present: an Egyptian amusement tax in force since 16 July 2023 is collected and reported by Red Sea sport and dive centres.

2026: no municipal or federation zoning map for El Gouna exists; the town's own kite-centre listing carries no rule beyond registering with a station. A reported Coast Guard ban on kiting after 17:00 at Hurghada spots, hotels and resorts sits oddly with posted hours that run to sunset here, and its application in El Gouna is unconfirmed.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Schools that ride here

Rider tips

Register at the office before you travel in the busy months. Capacity is limited and riders on their own gear have to book beach service too.
Check the moon as well as the forecast, then ask which zone is live before you rig: summer full-moon lows can leave the lagoon almost dry for two or three hours and push everyone behind the reef.
Stay out of the first 50 m. It is the launch and landing corridor, not a riding area.
Bring booties if you are sensitive to reef and stone, especially for the walk out at low water.
Use water-resistant sun cream and a lycra top; the summer heat is serious even when the wind feels cooling.
Pack a full suit for a winter trip, and something warm for after sunset.
Do not plan morning sessions. The thermal is not up before 11:00 on most days.
Go in February if you own a full suit: about 80% rideable days, water 21-23 C and almost nobody on the beach.
Buy the multi-day beach package on arrival rather than paying day by day. In 2026 seven days is EUR 92 where seven single days would be EUR 98, so the week saves about EUR 6 and works out near EUR 13 a day; the discount deepens with length, down to EUR 215 for twenty days. Thirteen and fourteen days both cost EUR 158, so if you are staying thirteen, buy fourteen.
July is not the peak it looks like. It measures lower than June, August, September and October.

Getting there

Airport

Hurghada International Airport (HRG)

Route

Fly to HRG, then take a pre-arranged transfer or taxi to El Gouna; inside town it is the station shuttle, a tuk-tuk, the local bus or a taxi. Tuk-tuks struggle with the current construction access to the kite beach, so the hotel shuttle is the safer bet.

Transfer

30-40 minutes from HRG to El Gouna by car; KBC also states about 30 minutes, while some third-party transfer listings quote around 34-41 minutes.

El Gouna runs from budget rentals to luxury hotels. Closest to the kite beach are Mosaique and Casa Cook, about 500 m on foot. In the marina there are Ali Pasha, Captain's Inn and Turtle's Inn; groups usually take a villa or an apartment.
