The spot

Sahl Hasheesh is a resort bay roughly 18 km south of Hurghada International Airport and just north of Makadi Bay. The wind is the northwest Red Sea Breeze with a thermal kick in the afternoon: left cross-shore in the morning at the Oberoi/Wild Beach launch, turning cross-onshore later, 15-25 kts in the May to October season and averaging 22.0 kt over that window. Winter drops to 12-18 kt with the odd stronger front.

Water conditions

The water is the point: shallow and flat for about 150 m off the sand at the Oberoi/Wild Beach, then bumpier further out or once the wind is properly up. This is a learner and freeride bay for people staying in the resorts; a handful of riders on the water is a busy day.

Hazards and access

Coral, reef, stones and shells sit around the entries, so wear shoes, and there is a submerged artificial reef offshore with divers on it. Whether the Oberoi/Wild Beach launch takes walk-in kiters who are not hotel guests is unconfirmed for 2026, and no rescue boat is documented.

Rescue

No public rescue boat and no published emergency number. The kite station at Sahl Hasheesh New Marina keeps its own rescue speed boat for its clients, and the resort watersports centre supervises its own lessons. An independent rider going downwind has nothing documented behind them, so ask the centre before launching how far their boat will actually come.

Launch

The Oberoi/Wild Beach launch is a direct fine-sand beach with a wide, obstacle-free take-off area; the launch is ample and sandy, though stones and shells can be present.

In practice riders stay out of the marked swimming areas in front of the hotels and off the coral at either end of the bay. Access to the Oberoi/Wild Beach launch for anyone who is not a hotel guest is unconfirmed for 2026.

Wear water shoes on the way in: coral, stones and shells line the entries.
Ask the centre where the divers, the snorkel zones and the artificial reef are before you head far offshore.
Ride the morning left cross-shore for the flattest water; the afternoon thermal adds chop as it turns cross-onshore.
Boardshorts from May to October; in winter bring a long 4/5 mm suit.
Do not plan a dawn session. The lightest hours are 06:00-10:00 and the wind is strongest mid-afternoon.
Ask the station how far downwind its rescue boat will go before you commit to a long tack; nothing public covers you.
