The feel of the place
Ras Sudr is the Cairo kiter's weekend fix: a scruffy Gulf-of-Suez service town for the local oil industry, with the actual kite life happening in a strip of independent beach camps outside town, not in the town itself. It is cheap, functional and utterly unglamorous - there is no resort polish, no old town to wander, nothing much beyond kiting, eating and sleeping in a bungalow.

- Ras Sudr town itself is not a tourist destination - it's an oil-industry service town; don't expect to wander a charming center. Life is at the beach camps outside town.
- The camp scene here is less institutionally stable than in established resort destinations - a flagship camp (Kiteloop) was bulldozed by the government in 2017 over a land dispute, so verify your chosen camp is currently operating before you commit, rather than assuming continuity from older blog posts.
- It's a road trip, not a flight-in destination - budget 2-2.5 hours each way from Cairo through a tunnel and checkpoints, and coordinate transfer with your camp rather than assuming public transport will drop you at the beach.
- Everything you might need in an emergency - the hospital, the pharmacies, the ATMs, the banks - is in Ras Sudr town, about 16 km north of the camp strip, and none of it is at the beach. Arrive with cash, medication and a plan for how you would get to town at 3am.

Ras Sudr is about 40 km of Gulf of Suez coast in South Sinai, with kite centres scattered along it rather than one beach everybody shares. The water is shallow and flat over sand, and it is one of Egypt's easier places to learn as well as a good freestyle flat if you already ride.
Wind and timing
The thermal runs through the day instead of switching on after lunch, so a morning session is normal here and there is no dead calm to wait out. March-November is the season, June-September the peak, and late August into September the strongest and gustiest stretch.
Tide effects
Tide moves the spot: low water flattens the lagoons and can leave only channels, high water adds depth and chop, with small kickers to jump off.
Crowd and centers
Cairo riders come for the weekend because the drive is 2.5-3 hours, and that shapes the crowd more than international traffic does. Winter is the catch: some centres close or run reduced operations between November and March. Rescue and storage are billed separately from lessons at some of them, and a few launches turn offshore where the shoreline curves, so choose the centre before you book the bed.
Getting on the water
The launchMultiple resort and kite-center launches rather than one public launch: La Hacienda/Soul, The Kite Buzz/Paradise, Fly Kitesurfing, Kitesurfing Village, Kiteloop/Matarma and 360 are all Ras Sudr kite operations or spots. Launches are generally sandy beach or lagoon edges; at the Ramada-area launch, kiters should launch to the right of a tower and watch that obstacle.

Permits and zoning
2026: no Ras Sudr-wide kitesurf permit or municipal beach ordinance was found, and access runs through the individual centres and their own zoning. At the Ramada-area launch windsurfers keep left of the tower and kiters right of it, and the lagoons upwind are private, where access causes trouble. Tourism Police permits apply to organised touristic groups in South Sinai.
Riding and lessons
Offshore wind should be ridden only with a rescue boat or while staying close to shore. Lessons take children from 12 years and a 40 kg minimum weight. Rescue and storage are charged separately from course packages at some centres, so confirm what a package actually includes.

Ras Sudr is not a place, it is a 95 km coastline: a service town at one end and the kiting 16 km south of it. The camp strip sits at 29.4525N, 32.7524E, around Kilo 75 from the Ahmed Hamdi Tunnel; every ATM, both banks, all five pharmacies and the hospital sit in town at 29.589N, 32.719E. Nothing you might need in an emergency is at the beach.

Wind patterns
The wind calendar is not "summer". Five years of reanalysis at the strip put September and October top at 83% of days reaching 12 kt in the afternoon, June at 76%, April 73%, August 70% - and July at 61%, the worst month of the warm season, which is exactly when the forum sceptics went twice and came home angry.
The day peaks at 15:00-17:00, not midday. It is a NW sea breeze - 72% of afternoon hours from that quadrant, NE effectively zero. Sleep in, ride late, ignore the spot-wiki.
Getting there
Logistics: CAI to the camps is 190-200 km and 2.5 hours, EUR 57-88 for a booked private transfer or an unpublished EGP quote from your camp. Price both; the camp is usually cheaper.
SSH is a real second gateway at 3 hours, contrary to the "CAI only" line, but it only makes sense if you are already in Sinai. East Delta buses stop at Sudr on the Sharm corridor, drop you in town 16 km short, and book in Arabic only.
Transport at destination
There is no car-rental office in Ras Sudr at all. Rent in Cairo or take a car-with-driver from the camp. Fuel is abundant - seven stations mapped - and a sedan is fine everywhere you need to go.
Where to stay
Best base, low risk: Green Sudr Resort with FLY Kitesurfing on site - 8.1/10 from 278 reviews, AC, two pools, beachfront restaurant, from about EGP 4,200, calendar open through July 2027. It does not close in winter.
Best base, real camp: Soul Kitesurfing, confirmed live in 2026 - 50+ seafront bungalows, IKO instruction capped at two students, WhatsApp only on +20 112 110 5926. It quietly runs two sites 500 m apart: the main one has the restaurant and live music to midnight, the second is where the riding happens.
Below that, 360 Kitesurfing is tent-tier and Sea Brothers caps its private lagoon at five riders. Nothing confirms Matarma Bay, 360 or Sea Brothers is still operating. A flagship camp here was bulldozed in 2017 - confirm before you wire anything.
Medical cover
The medical picture is far better than the guides claim. Ras Sudr Central Hospital is GAHAR-accredited with 46 beds, 11 ICU beds and an emergency operating theatre, not the "basic clinic" the record assumed. But it is 16 km away and runs in Arabic, so the real question is who drives you at 3am.
Power and connectivity
Part two: power is no longer the worry. National load shedding ended in July 2024 and the government has pledged zero cuts for 2025 and 2026 - though tariffs rose sharply and that is showing up in room rates. Starlink does not exist in Egypt, licensed or otherwise, so weak camp wifi has no workaround beyond a Vodafone SIM.
Drones
Part three: leave the drone at home. Cairo customs confiscate them, there is no tourist permit route, and penalties reach EGP 50,000 or seven years. Sinai is the worst place in Egypt to test this.
What's changing
Part four: the destination is changing under you. Paradise, Bay Side and Mousa Coast are selling thousands of chalets into the Cairo second-home market, so the scruffy-camp Ras Sudr of older write-ups is being replaced by gated compounds - and some "resorts" you will see listed are property sales, not hotels.
Make these calls
Decision one: September or October and this is one of the best value flat-water spots in the region; July and you may get a windless week at 41C. Decision two: resort tier buys AC, a pool, a review history and winter availability but no camp texture; camp tier buys the scene, WhatsApp-only pricing and a November-March closure risk.
Decision three: settle self-drive versus camp transfer before you fly, because there is no rental at the beach and no useful public transport to it. And carry cash - the strip has none, and the small-note shortage makes a big bill useless in a bungalow bar.

Expect security/military checkpoints on the Sinai road (normal and routine on the tourist coastal corridor, part of the general security posture in Sinai since the 2010s); the Ahmed Hamdi Tunnel is the choke point everyone passes through.
