The thermal tends to run through the day rather than switching on at a set hour, so mornings are usually already rideable and there is no dead calm to wait out. At the Ramada-area launch the north to north-east flow builds through the morning, peaks around midday and often eases in the late afternoon.

The spot

Ras Sudr is about 40 km of Gulf of Suez coast in South Sinai, with kite centres scattered along it rather than one beach everybody shares. The water is shallow and flat over sand, and it is one of Egypt's easier places to learn as well as a good freestyle flat if you already ride.

Wind and timing

The thermal runs through the day instead of switching on after lunch, so a morning session is normal here and there is no dead calm to wait out. March-November is the season, June-September the peak, and late August into September the strongest and gustiest stretch.

Tide effects

Tide moves the spot: low water flattens the lagoons and can leave only channels, high water adds depth and chop, with small kickers to jump off.

Crowd and centers

Cairo riders come for the weekend because the drive is 2.5-3 hours, and that shapes the crowd more than international traffic does. Winter is the catch: some centres close or run reduced operations between November and March. Rescue and storage are billed separately from lessons at some of them, and a few launches turn offshore where the shoreline curves, so choose the centre before you book the bed.

The quiver, in words

A 75-85 kg rider covers most of the season on a 10 m. Add a 12 m for the softer spring and autumn days and a 9 m for the strong late-summer thermal; centre quivers here are built around 9-12 m. A 7 m only earns its place from late August into September, when gusts pass 30 kt.

Typical strength

16-25 kt through the season, with a working average nearer 17-18 kt on the roughly eight days in ten that are rideable. Late August to late September is the strongest stretch and can gust over 30 kt. A station at one of the lagoons measured a 12 kt annual mean with 16 kt gusts over 2007-2014, which is an all-hours figure rather than a windy-hours one, and it no longer reports.

Reliable and steady in season, thermal, strong enough by late summer to want a smaller kite. Direction and safety change from one launch to the next.

March-November is the main windy season. Wind certainty runs at roughly 80% from March to October and around 60% across the wider February-November window; June-September is the usual peak, and June-October is the window quoted for the Fly Kitesurfing lagoon. Some centres close or run reduced operations between November and March, so confirm before booking a winter trip.

Rescue

Rescue is a centre service, not a public one, and it is not automatically part of what you pay: at least one Ras Sudr centre sells rescue and storage separately from its course packages.

Centres run rescue when the wind sits offshore, and the standing advice is to ride an offshore direction only behind a rescue boat or while staying close to shore.

Ask the specific centre whether its rescue covers independent riders or only students before you rig.

Launch

Multiple resort and kite-center launches rather than one public launch: La Hacienda/Soul, The Kite Buzz/Paradise, Fly Kitesurfing, Kitesurfing Village, Kiteloop/Matarma and 360 are all Ras Sudr kite operations or spots. Launches are generally sandy beach or lagoon edges; at the Ramada-area launch, kiters should launch to the right of a tower and watch that obstacle.

Permits and zoning

2026: no Ras Sudr-wide kitesurf permit or municipal beach ordinance was found, and access runs through the individual centres and their own zoning. At the Ramada-area launch windsurfers keep left of the tower and kiters right of it, and the lagoons upwind are private, where access causes trouble. Tourism Police permits apply to organised touristic groups in South Sinai.

Riding and lessons

Offshore wind should be ridden only with a rescue boat or while staying close to shore. Lessons take children from 12 years and a 40 kg minimum weight. Rescue and storage are charged separately from course packages at some centres, so confirm what a package actually includes.
