When it fills in

The summer wind is an afternoon thermal. Around the Thermaic Gulf it fills from roughly the middle of the day and runs into the evening, with mornings usually dead; indicative regional timing, since no hour-by-hour measurement exists for the Nea Moudania beach itself.

Nea Moudania is the best-documented kite spot in this corner of Halkidiki, with its own kitesurfing page and a forecast point on the beach coordinates. The beach faces west into the Thermaic Gulf and the summer wind is NW to N, side-onshore, roughly 12-18 knots.
That is moderate: flat water and a gentle sandy slope suit learning, freeride and foiling, and leave a twin-tip rider underpowered on the weaker days. Bring 12-17 m. No kite school, rescue service or marked corridor is on record at the beach, so your launch is whatever open sand you find away from swimmers and the resort strip.
June to September is the window, water around 25.8 C in summer and 14.8 C in winter. In July and August the beach traffic, not the wind, decides where you can ride.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Type

Standing depth

Sandy and shallow. The town beach in front of the settlement is described as clean sand with shallow water that families use, on a gentle slope. How many metres out you can stand is unmeasured.

Tides

Small Aegean/Mediterranean tide range; open Aegean spring tidal range is reported as not exceeding about 0.3 m, so the spot is effectively tide independent for kiting.

Temperature

25.8°C summer · 14.8°C winter

Wetsuit

No wetsuit or shorty in peak summer; full suit in winter/shoulder cold water. Greek national kitesurf rules require an isothermal suit from 15 October to 15 May.

15–28°C water
West-facing sandy beach on the Thermaic Gulf, flat water inside the gulf and a gentle slope. The beach carries its own kitesurfing forecast point.

Your level

beginnerintermediatenot for advanceds here
Sandy, flat and moderate wind, which is kind to a beginner. Advanced riders will find it light unless they foil or size up.

Rescue

No kite rescue and no school boat. Greek law makes lifeguard cover compulsory from 1 June to 30 September, 10:00 to 18:00, on the beaches a three-member committee of the port authority, the health region and the municipality designates as crowded each year, which in practice means the organised sections of the town beach rather than the open sand you would rig on. Offshore you are on the Hellenic Coast Guard: 108, or 112.

Launch

Rig on open sandy beach sections away from swimmers, organized resort areas and any marked swimming lanes. The town beach runs about two kilometres along the front of the settlement and is one of the more organised in the area, so the free sand sits at the ends rather than in the middle.Eleonas beach, also at Nea Moudania, is the quiet end of the same shoreline. No formal kite corridor or school launch was found.

  • No lifeguard outside 1 June to 30 September and outside 10:00-18:00, and none at all away from the organised beach sections
Rules & access
Checked in 2026: Greek national kitesurf rules prohibit kitesurfing before sunrise and after sunset, on crowded beaches, inside ports, marinas and fishing shelters and their regulated approaches, and within 200 m of anchored vessels, moving craft, rocks, islets, reefs, buoys or other sea obstacles.
The same rules require helmet, impact or flotation jacket, hook knife, quick-release systems, and an isothermal suit from 15 October to 15 May. No Nea Moudania-specific kite zone or municipal rule was found.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Pack 12-17 m or a foil; the summer range is 12-18 knots.
  • Read the shoreline angle before you rig. The working flow is NW/N side-onshore.
  • Keep well outside the organized bathing areas in July and August.
  • Assume no rescue and no school backup unless someone on the beach tells you otherwise.
  • Drive from Thessaloniki rather than take the bus if you have gear: it is about 60 km and roughly 40 minutes.
  • Save 108 for the Hellenic Coast Guard and 112 before you go out; there is no kite rescue on this beach.
  • The thermal is an afternoon wind. Turning up at nine gets you a swim, not a session.
  • The town beach is about two kilometres long and organised in the middle; walk to the ends for space to rig.
