Nearby Nea Moudania Beach 32 km · straight-line distance

Possidi Cape is the western tip of the Kassandra peninsula in Halkidiki, a sand spit running out into the Thermaic Gulf. Summer brings regular thermal wind from the northwest to west sector, and the shape of the cape is the whole story: on one side that wind is side or side-onshore, on the other it is offshore and the drift carries you out.
Pick your side before you pump. Water near the sandbar is shallow, sandy and flat; round the point it turns to chop and waves, with strong current reported at the tip and rocky, pebbly edges further along.
There is no kite centre on Poseidi Beach and no rescue on record, and a kitesurfer has already been recovered several nautical miles offshore here by military helicopter. Intermediate riders and up, on the understanding that the backup is you. Forecasts spell it Poseidi or Posidi as often as Possidi, which is worth knowing when you go looking for it.

Summer is the documented season, with regular summer thermal wind specifically from the northwest to west sector.

Strength

No knot figure is published for this spot.

Direction to shore

The cape is a sand spit, so the same wind is side-onshore on one flank and straight offshore on the other, and picking the wrong side is the main way to get hurt here. Working directions run SE, S-SE and S on one flank and W-NW, NW and N-NW on the other; the summer thermal sits in the NW-to-W sector.Read the water and choose the side before you pump, not after.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Type

sea

Standing depth

Shallow with sandy bottom; depth varies in places, with rocky/pebbly edges.

Tides

Effectively tideless. The nearest published tables on this coast, at Nea Moudania in the same gulf, show a swing of about 0.3 m between high and low water, with recorded extremes of 0.5 m and -0.2 m. Nothing there changes a launch. What does move the water level is wind and pressure, and what moves the depth is the sandbar itself, which shifts.

Temperature

25.6°C summer · 15°C winter

Wetsuit

usually light neoprene or none in peak summer; full wetsuit needed in winter

Currents

Strong current around the cape is reported, though no kite-specific current mapping exists.

15–28°C water
Open Thermaic Gulf water around a shifting sandy cape; conditions range from flatter water near the sandbar to chop and waves when wind wraps around the point.

Your level

Rescue

None on the beach. No kite centre, no rescue boat, no lifeguard reported at the cape. That matters here more than at most spots, because the national watersports rules require a licensed lifeguard with a powered boat above 6 Bft or whenever the wind pushes riders toward open water, and there is nobody on this beach to provide it.
Sea emergencies go to the coast guard; 112 reaches them. A kitesurfer lost off this coast was eventually found several nautical miles out and lifted by military helicopter.

Launch

Rig on open sandy sections of Possidi cape or west beach, choosing the side with side-shore or side-onshore wind and staying away from swimmers, rocky edges and the narrow cape tip.

Rules & access
2026: no Possidi-specific kite ordinance was found. The national rules apply and are strict on paper: no riding within 200 m of swimmers, nothing inside the buoyed swimming limits, no closer than 200 m to the shoreline except through a marked corridor, at least 1 nautical mile from ports, marinas and fish farms (reducible to 500 m by committee decision), no riding at beaches classed as crowded or heavily used, nothing before sunrise or after sunset, and no further than 1 nautical mile offshore. Above 6 Bft, or when the wind sets toward open sea, a licensed lifeguard with a powered rescue boat must be present. Minimum age 16, or 14 to 16 with parental consent and supervision. Riding under the influence is prohibited.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Pick the side of the cape where the wind is side-shore or side-onshore, and leave the offshore side alone.
  • Stay off the narrow tip and away from any current lines you can see on the water.
  • Bring self-rescue gear and the skills to use it; do not count on centre rescue unless someone confirms it on the day.
  • In July and August rig away from the swimmers, and watch the sandbar for where the depth changes.
