Nieuwpoort is where the IJzer meets the North Sea: a marina, a fishing port and a wide tidal beach running toward Oostduinkerke. It is the #2 most-visited wind spot in Belgium and home of the Vlaamse Zeezeilschool, so the parking and the school setup are better than most of the coast.

Gently shelving sand. On the ebb you can wade a long way out and still be waist deep, and the same flats refill quickly on the flood, so the walk back gets longer while you ride. No measured beach profile is published, so treat the depth as indicative and keep an eye on how far the water has moved.

Tides

Large tidal range typical of the Belgian coast exposes a much wider beach at low tide; exact tidal figures for Nieuwpoort were not sourced. The IJzer river mouth is regulated through the Ganzepoot sluice / storm-surge-barrier complex at the harbor.

Lifeguards and responsibility

Lifeguards rather than a kite pickup. Five rescue posts cover Nieuwpoort's beaches, open daily from 1 July to 31 August, 10:30 to 18:30; in the shoulder season only the Veurnestraat post opens, on May weekends and set dates from June to mid-September 2026, same hours. None of it is a kite rescue service, and outside those windows there is nobody watching.

The 2019 federal rules put the responsibility on you: tell someone ashore before you go out, and carry your own means of signalling distress once you are in the sea zone.

Launch

Wide, gently sloping sandy beach at Nieuwpoort-Bad with car/camper parking directly at the spot, plus restaurants, showers, toilets and reported medical/rescue services nearby (kiteguide.com). The IJzer estuary and Ganzepoot marina complex sit at the harbor edge of the beach, with the IJzermonding nature reserve just beyond.

2019 federal surf-sport rules (KB Pleziervaart of 28 June 2019, in the Belgian State Gazette of 4 July 2019) cover kites: you ride from the marked launch zone and out to a maximum of two nautical miles.Riding is forbidden in the swimming zone, in the buffer zone between swimming and launch zones, in the safety zone between the swimming zone and the sea zone, and inside the harbour.You may not go to sea from the harbour.
2019: no riding between sunset and sunrise, though an exemption can be requested. The same reform scrapped the old 7 Beaufort ceiling, so the call on a big day is yours.
2019 kit rule: a wetsuit in the launch zone. Out in the sea and coastal zone you also need a swim, buoyancy or impact vest and a means of sending a distress signal, preferably one that gives your position.
2019: someone ashore - beach club, sports club or lifeguard post - has to know you have gone to sea.
2019: competitions and organised group sessions need a permit, applied for three weeks in advance.
Club framework on the Westende-Nieuwpoort beach, published since the 2011 provincial guideline and still current: insurance through a VVW- or VYF-affiliated watersports club, membership or a day membership for visitors, and a minimum standard of planing in both directions (VVW/VYF basic kitesurf passport or IKO level 2) before you ride unsupervised. Below that, lessons at a recognised school.Launch proceduresKites go up and down in the launch zones at the high-water line in front of the club, departures and arrivals happen inside the official watersport zones, and you come off the water the moment the red watersports pennant is raised.EquipmentHelmet and buoyancy vest for students; helmet for anyone on a board leash; kite leash and quick release required.
