On the clock

10:30 · 18:30

No daily onset to plan around. The wind is frontal, so it can be in at first light and gone by lunchtime, or fill in mid-afternoon and hold until dark. Riding between sunset and sunrise is prohibited, and in July and August the lifeguard posts work 10:30-18:30.

The marks are the clock times the record names, laid on a 24-hour day. The bar between the first and the last covers those hours; it is not a promise of wind.

Bredene is Twins Club: a marked kite zone at Strandpost 1, Driftweg 69, on an open sandy beach just east of Ostend, shared with wingfoilers and windsurfers, and the one surf zone IKWV lists for the town.
The water is the North Sea, so chop and wind waves, about 19 C in summer and around 6 C in winter, full suit all year. Wind that works comes from southwest through northwest, plus northerly and northeasterly onshore; easterly and southeasterly is offshore and you do not go out.
Spring and autumn fronts give the reliable days; summer can work but is usually lighter and the beach is full of bathers in July and August. You ride through the club, Belgian-coast style: day membership with insurance, Talis or club identification visible, launch inside the marked zone, and the club's water scooter comes for you if it goes wrong.
It is a decent freeride and progression beach for riders who already ride; on your own as a beginner, no. Breakwaters and a big tidal range are what raise the stakes.

Typical strength

Nothing is published for the beach itself. The nearest station with a long record, at Ostend airport about 10 km away, averages 10 kt across the year from the west with gusts averaging around 32 kt over 2000-2026 — a regional indication, not a measurement on this sand. Kiteable days sit well above that average and arrive with fronts.

Best reliability is spring and autumn frontal wind; summer can work but is often lighter and much busier on the beach.

Direction to shore

Onshore to cross-onshore from the sea sectors; E/SE is offshore and you stay on the beach.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2020-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Rules & access
Royal Decree of 22 June 2016: wave sports are banned in swim, buffer, safety and harbour zones and between sunset and sunrise. The old 7 Bft ceiling was dropped with that decree, so there is no legal wind limit, only your own judgement.
Kitesurfing runs from the marked insertion zones out to 2 nautical miles, and in the coastal and sea zones you must carry a thermal wetsuit, a swim, rescue or impact vest, and one signalling device — pyrotechnic flares, a waterproof phone, VHF, PLB or AIS SART (2026 federation guidance).
2026: 6 swim zones and 1 surf zone are designated at Bredene, with lifeguards on duty 10:30-18:30 in July and August. You ride through the beach club: WWSV membership or a day membership, listed at around EUR 20 in 2026 and including accident and damage insurance, with the Talis ribbon visible on your harness or you are asked to leave. Launch inside the marked insertion zone, which is sometimes split into a beginner half and an advanced half, and follow the club rescuers' instructions.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Check in at Twins Club (Driftweg 69, Strandpost 1) before you rig and ask whether a beginner/advanced split is running in the zone that day.
  • Launch on the lower tide; at high water the beach shrinks and you lose your downwind margin.
  • Stay clear of the breakwaters and the July-August swimmers; the marked zone exists to keep you out of both.
  • Full wetsuit even in August; the sea averages about 19 C.
  • Carry what the sea zone requires: thermal wetsuit, a buoyancy or impact vest, and one signalling device — flares, a waterproof phone, VHF, PLB or AIS SART.
  • Getting you out of the water costs nothing. Getting your kite back is EUR 125 per started hour if you hold no membership on this coast (2026).
