On the clock

10:00 · 10:30 · 18:00 · 19:00

On this coast the wind usually comes in around 10:00-10:30 and holds until 18:00-19:00 in season; the onset at Nyali itself is unconfirmed.

The marks are the clock times the record names, laid on a 24-hour day. The bar between the first and the last covers those hours; it is not a promise of wind.

Nyali is the Mombasa city option: a reef-protected Indian Ocean lagoon one bridge north of the island, with hotels, restaurants, Moi International Airport and the SGR line all close. Inside the reef the water is shallow and flat at low tide and turns choppy as the tide fills, with small to medium waves on and outside the reef.
Two winds run the year, the northeast Kaskazi around December to March and the southeast Kuzi/Kusi around June to September; Kuzi is the stronger of the two and brings the swell with it.
Pepea Kite Surfing is based in Nyali next to Big Tree and Pirates Beach, and the same shoreline also goes under Reef Hotel, Mombasa Beach and Maasai Beach depending on who is talking.
It is a resort beachfront, not a kite beach: swimmers, vendors, boats, jet skis and coral all share it, and the water is in or beside the Mombasa Marine Park and Reserve. Lessons work here and so does an advanced session on a Kuzi day.
Settle launch etiquette and any park rules with Pepea, Reef Kite Centre or KWS before you ride, and keep Sunday out of your plans.

Character

trade

fills in: On this coast the wind usually comes in around 10:00-10:30 and holds until 18:00-19:00 in season; the onset at Nyali itself is unconfirmed.

Typical strength

Kaskazi about 15-22 knots, Kuzi/Kusi about 18-28 knots. Both figures are regional to the Kenya coast rather than measured at Nyali.

Steady trade-wind seasons. Kaskazi is the reliable one, warmer and lighter; Kuzi/Kusi is stronger, less predictable and comes with more swell.
Pepea's kite season is May-August and December-April. The months that repeat everywhere else are December-March and June-September, with January-March and June-August/September the most consistent. Kaskazi is the northeast monsoon; Kuzi/Kusi is the southeast/southerly monsoon and brings more swell.

The quiver, in words

Pepea's range is 7-17 m. 9-12 m is reportedly common in the Kenyan summer, though that figure is not specific to Nyali.

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

The water

Type

mixed

Standing depth

Shallow lagoon/reef-flat conditions are reported; exact standing-depth range was not found.

Tides

Tide-dependent: low tide leaves flatter, shallower water inside the reef, while the beach narrows and the lagoon roughens as the tide rises, with little beach left and possible shore break at full high water. It is occasionally called tide-independent, but that is unconfirmed, and the detailed spot-by-spot accounts here show the same tide effects as nearby Diani and Galu.

Temperature

28°C summer · 25°C winter

Wetsuit

Usually boardshorts/swimsuit or rash vest; Mombasa sea temperatures are reported around 25-29 C year-round.

Currents

No current data exists for Nyali itself; rip currents can form along this coast during high surf or strong tides.

26–30°C water
Nyali is a coral-reef-protected Indian Ocean beach: flat to choppy shallow water inside the reef, small to medium waves on or outside it. The water off Pirates Beach and Big Tree is clear and flat, and the lagoon is generally flat at low tide and choppier toward high.
The reef and lagoon are part of or next to the Mombasa Marine National Park and Reserve, managed by Kenya Wildlife Service.

Your level

beginnerintermediateadvanced
Beginner through expert. Beginners get the shallow flat lagoon sections; the stronger Kuzi wind and the reef waves are for riders who already handle both. The tourist beach and the reef mean local judgment counts more than the level label.

What riders come here for

Urban resort beachfront rather than an isolated kite beach: hotels and services at hand, working schools, and more non-kite traffic than the quieter Kenya spots. Most days it is uncrowded. Sundays are not, and Pirates Beach stays lively.

Rescue

+254 720 470 771

Rescue here is school-run, not public. Lifeguards are reportedly on the hotel beaches, but no service covering kiters is documented.
The numbers that work are the schools' - Reef Kite Kenya answers on +254 720 470 771, and Pepea sits next to Big Tree and Pirates Beach - plus Kenya Wildlife Service's toll-free line, 0800 597 000, for anything inside the marine park and reserve.

Launch

Wide white-sand resort and public beach launches along Nyali and Mombasa Beach, with the kiting around Pepea, Big Tree and Pirates Beach and in front of the Reef Hotel and Mombasa Beach Hotel. There is room, but the same shoreline carries beach users, hotel guests, vendors and other watersports.

Hazards riders report 7

  • reef
  • boat traffic (busy tourist beach)
  • Coral reef and shallow coral/rocks, especially around low tide or outside the lagoon.
  • Busy tourist beach with swimmers, vendors and other watersports around Pirates/Nyali/Mombasa Beach.
  • Boat, jet-ski and other water-activity traffic in the Mombasa Marine Park/Reserve tourist area.
  • possible rip currents during high surf or strong tides, from a coast-wide warning rather than a Nyali-specific incident
  • Reef waves outside the protected lagoon in swell, especially during Kuzi/Kusi.
Rules & access
2026: the water off Nyali lies in the Mombasa Marine National Park (about 10 km2, a fully protected core where all extractive use is banned) and the surrounding Marine Reserve (about 200 km2, a multiple-use buffer where regulated fishing and other controlled activities are allowed), both gazetted in 1986 and run by Kenya Wildlife Service. Entry to the park is ticketed: USD 25 for a non-resident adult and USD 15 for a child, USD 15/10 for other African citizens, KES 675/350 for Kenyan residents and KES 500/250 for East African citizens (2026). Park access points along this beach include Nyali Gate at the park headquarters and Voyager Gate at the Voyager watersports area, and gates open 06:00 and close 18:00. Single-use plastic is prohibited and you carry your rubbish out. No kite-specific permit, launch zone or seasonal restriction has been published for the Nyali beachfront, and whether a rider who launches from the sand is treated as entering the park is not stated anywhere public.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Ask a school where they are launching that day; Nyali, Mombasa Beach, Pirates Beach, Maasai Beach and Big Tree all describe overlapping pieces of the same beachfront.
  • Pack reef shoes, or expect coral underfoot if you walk out at low tide.
  • Take the low-tide window for flat water; ride high tide for more water over the reef flat and choppier freeride.
  • Ride early on Sundays and public holidays, when Pirates and Nyali fill up with non-kiters.
  • Bring a wide quiver if you are there on the edge of a season: Pepea's range for the spot is 7-17 m.
  • The lagoon sits inside a marine park and reserve with gates that open at 06:00 and close at 18:00 and a per-person conservation fee; settle with a school what applies to a session before you pay anything.
  • Save a school number before you ride: there is no rescue service here beyond what the schools run.
