Arbeyal is an artificial beach in the middle of Gijon, between El Natahoyo and La Calzada, sheltered by the El Musel harbour. That shelter is the point: the water is far calmer than San Lorenzo, which makes it the local flat-water beach for freestyle and for getting a first trick down.
NE is the direction, with anything from N to E working, and NW comes in cleanly once it clears the breakwaters. Strong SW is rideable because the harbour blocks the sea, and it is offshore and gusty, so leave it to riders who are here every week. Watch low tide, when the bottom is rock.
In bathing season you enter from the El Musel side and have to work upwind to get outside the buoy line, which is a real filter: if your upwind is shaky, come back another month.

Character

mixed

N-to-E/NE orientation is good; NW enters well beyond the breakwaters, while SW is very gusty and risky.
The beach is at its best for kiting outside the summer, on NE, when the sand is empty. The season that governs it is the bathing season, when access is restricted and you have to ride upwind, outside the buoy line.

Strength

No knot figure is published for this spot.

Direction to shore

N to NE is generally onshore to side-onshore for the beach; SW is offshore/terral.

Dominant direction

N through E, with NE highlighted; NW also works after passing the breakwaters; strong SW is possible but offshore/gusty

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Standing depth

No measured profile has been published. The bay drains a long way: at low water more than 100,000 m2 of it is uncovered, and what shows is rock as much as sand, so there is little usable water then. On a filled tide the bottom shelves gently and you are standing a long way out before it gets deep.

Tides

Low water is the problem. The bottom that uncovers is rock, exposed or just under the surface, and more than 100,000 m2 of the bay dries out. Treat low tide as a reason not to go; mid to high is when it is worth rigging.

Temperature

20°C summer · 13°C winter

Wetsuit

2/2 mm around July-September, 3/2 mm around May-June, 4/3 mm with hood, boots and gloves in November-February.

Currents

Sheltered from swell and current by the harbour breakwater and the shell shape of the bay. The water stays flat right along the beach, which is the whole reason local riders come here rather than to San Lorenzo.

13–22°C water
Sheltered artificial urban beach west of Gijon with very calm water and little to no surf because of the port/breakwater protection.

Your level

not for beginners hereintermediateadvanced
The sheltered shape suits initiation and progression, but summer access is not advised for riders who cannot get upwind, so this record marks beginner false for normal public access.

Rescue

Daily lifeguard service in season, with salvamento cover for the beach. Nothing kite-specific.

Launch

Artificial urban beach of about 500 m between El Natahoyo and La Calzada, rebuilt in 1995 and held in a shell shape behind the El Musel breakwaters, which is what keeps the water flat. In bathing season riders enter from the side closest to El Musel and must work upwind to ride outside the buoy line.

Rules & access
2026: in bathing season, entry is from the El Musel and port side, and riders have to tack upwind to navigate outside the buoy line. Not advised for anyone who does not dominate upwind technique.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Stay off it at low tide unless you know where the rock is.
  • Leave SW alone unless you ride here regularly; harbour shelter or not, it is offshore and gusty.
  • In bathing season use the El Musel side entry, only with the lifeguards' agreement, and get upwind of the buoy line before you relax.
  • Go to San Lorenzo instead if what you want is waves.
  • Sleeping in the van: the Gijon campervan parking area is at this beach.
  • The kite season here is the off-season. NE outside the bathing months, with the beach to yourself.
  • Buses 4 and 6 drop you close if you would rather not park.
