San Lorenzo is Gijon's city beach and one of its two main kite and windsurf spots, which makes it real and boxed in at the same time. NE or E is what you want; N, NNE and NNW also appear as recommended directions, so the best-direction question is not settled. It is not a beginner beach.
In bathing season you do not ride the open swimming beach at all: launching and returning happens through a lifeguard-controlled sports corridor between stairs 8 and 10, and you stay outside the yellow buoy line, treated like any other vessel.
NE works best around La Escalerona outside bathing season, where the wind comes in with more strength and stability; inshore at high tide it turns gusty. Water is chop and small waves on a northerly, and a proper wave venue on winter swell.
The tide takes the beach away, so low to mid is the window; at high water there is barely sand left below the Muro promenade. Currents build when there is a lot of sea and get stronger at high tide, and you share the water with surfers and the edges with rock and concrete.

Typical strength

No measurement for the beach itself. The Gijon coast counts around 125 days a year at 12 kt or more, concentrated November to April, with about five in July and about five in August; a powered northeasterly session means roughly 15-25 kt. Indicative.

NE works best around La Escalerona outside bathing season, where the wind enters with more strength and stability; wind is gustier inshore at high tide.
Kiting in Asturias is sporadic and runs on N through NE to NW. The wind counts give 14-16 days a month at 12 kt or more from November to April and about five in July and August, the inverse of the season the beach is busiest.
Outside the lifeguard calendar, 1 May to 15 October, nobody opens the sports corridor and nobody controls it.

The quiver, in words

Nothing is published for this beach. The wind range makes 12 m the everyday size for a 75-85 kg rider, 9-10 m on a strong winter northeasterly, and 14 m or more on the light summer days that are the only ones falling inside bathing season. Indicative, not reported. On a wave day around La Escalerona, take the smaller end of whatever you bring.

Direction to shore

NE is cross-onshore. Northerlies are generally onshore for the bay, and E is more side-shore.

Dominant direction

NE to E is the best working wind, with NE the strongest and most stable setting in the area for that direction. N, NNE and NNW appear as a broader recommended range elsewhere.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Tides

Large tidal range affects usable beach width; low to mid tide is recommended, and the beach can become small at high tide.

Temperature

20°C summer · 13°C winter

Wetsuit

2/2 mm is recommended around July-September, 3/2 mm around May-June, and 4/3 mm with hood/boots/gloves in November-February; a wetsuit is always needed.

Currents

Currents strengthen when there is a lot of sea, and get stronger at high tide.

13–22°C water
Urban sandy bay and Gijon's main city wave spot, with chop and small waves in northerly winds and potentially large winter swell.

Your level

not for beginners hereintermediateadvanced
The ratings disagree: one puts every level on this beach, another calls it intermediate with experts also enjoying it. The narrow lifeguard-controlled channel, the summer bathers, the lost high-tide space and the currents make it a poor beginner venue.

Rescue

Municipal lifeguards from 1 May to 15 October (2026): weekends and holidays 11:30-19:00 until 21 May, daily 11:30-19:00 from 22 May, daily 10:00-21:00 through June, July and August, daily 10:00-20:00 to 15 September, then daily 11:30-19:00 to 15 October. The same service controls the sports corridor, so no lifeguards on duty means nobody to open it. Emergencies go to 112.

Launch

Access is down the numbered stairs off the Muro promenade. Salvamento holds kiters to a very small channel before the wider Gijon bay opens up.

Rules & access
2026: in bathing season kiting is not allowed on the open swimming beach. Riders launch and return through a lifeguard-controlled sports corridor between stairs 8 and 10, and must navigate outside the yellow buoy line at all times, treated like any other vessel. The general beach rules add that boards, jet-skis and motor or sail craft are prohibited inside the bathing zone, and that sport on the sand is prohibited between 10:00 and 20:00.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Talk to the lifeguards before rigging in bathing season; the corridor is theirs to open or close.
  • Launch and land through the sports channel between stairs 8 and 10 when it is open, and nowhere else.
  • Ride low to mid tide. At high water the sand nearly reaches the promenade steps and the wind goes gusty inshore.
  • Stay outside the yellow bathing buoys at all times; you are treated as a vessel here.
  • Outside bathing season, set up around La Escalerona for NE, where the wind arrives stronger and steadier.
  • The corridor exists only while the lifeguard service runs, 1 May to 15 October. Outside those dates there is no channel and no cover.
  • The wind is a winter thing: 14-16 days a month over 12 kt from November to April, about five in July or August.
