Poniente is a man-made beach in the middle of Gijon, sheltered behind the marina and the industrial harbour breakwaters, which is why the water is flat to choppy with almost no wave exposure. It works on N, NNE and NNW, and locals use it for freeride when those directions turn up.
It is an expert spot, and the setting is the reason rather than the water: a small launch between harbour structures, boats, concrete, moles, a steep drop-off, and rocks that appear at low tide. Summer is the other problem. The sand fills with sunbathers, kiting is reportedly not possible then, and parking along the coast road runs out.
April through September is the season on paper; in practice you are hunting northerlies outside the sunbathing months, against monthly averages of about 5-9 kt and 125 days a year reaching 4 Bft/12 kt. Water is 13-18 C, so a wetsuit every session. San Lorenzo and Arbeyal along the same coast are better documented for kiting.

Typical strength

Not measured at the beach. About 125 days a year reach 12 kt or more, 14-16 a month from November to April against roughly five in July and August, so a rideable northerly here is around 15-25 kt and it is mostly a winter number. Indicative.

The spot works with northerlies and is a local freeride favourite because the breakwaters reduce waves.
November to April is when the wind is actually there: 14-16 days a month at 12 kt or more, against about five in July and August. The April-to-September window quoted for the wider destination does not match that count.
Summer hands you the least wind and an unusable beach at once; winter hands you the wind, 13 C water and an empty promenade.

The quiver, in words

No rider reports give sizes for Poniente. Working from the wind range, a 75-85 kg rider is on 12 m for a 14-18 kt northerly, 9-10 m when a winter N or NNE pushes past 20 kt, and 14-15 m on the marginal days that make up most of May to September. Indicative, derived from the wind statistics rather than from sessions.

Direction to shore

N to NNW is onshore to side-onshore in this north-facing urban bay. That is derived from the position and the recommended northerlies, not measured.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Tides

Kitesurfing conditions do not depend strongly on tide overall, but the launch area gets rockier and harder to use at low tide.

Wetsuit

Water is reportedly 13-18 C and a wetsuit is always needed. Gijon runs about 20.3 C on average in August and 12.5-13 C in late winter.

Rescue

Municipal lifeguards cover the beach from 1 May to 15 October (2026), with a fixed post, first aid and a rescue boat. Hours climb through the season, from weekends and holidays only in early May to daily 10:00-21:00 in June, July and August. Nothing outside those dates.
Emergencies go to 112.

Launch

Small urban sandy launch between harbour structures; the beach drops steeply and the low-tide launch can be rocky.

Rules & access
2026: boards, jet-skis and motor or sail craft are prohibited inside the marked bathing zone, and sport on the sand is prohibited from 10:00 to 20:00. No kite-specific municipal order for Poniente is published, and the ordinance text itself is not online. In practice the sand fills with sunbathers in summer and kiting is not possible then.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Walk the low-tide launch before rigging; rocks are reported there.
  • Stay clear of the harbour traffic and the breakwaters at both ends.
  • Treat summer beach days as unusable unless local authorities have explicitly opened an access channel.
  • Do not count on parking along the coast road in July and August.
  • Come for N, NNE or NNW; other directions are not worth the drive to Gijon.
  • Plan for winter. November to April carries most of the 12 kt-plus days; July and August average about five.
  • Boards and craft are banned inside the marked bathing zone, so once you are on the water stay outside the buoys.
