Praia da Daniela is the sheltered bay on the northwest of Santa Catarina Island, 23-26 km from the centre of Florianópolis, and it is where the schools take beginners on a NE day: flat to choppy, shallow near the shore, no real surf.
On a S wind the same schools move round to the Pontal at the tip of the peninsula, so pick the launch side before you pump up.
Spring, September to November, is the reliable season; count on 3-4 windy days a week across the year and the fewest in winter, when the wind that does come is a cold front from the south that is stronger and colder and no place for a first lesson.
Water is 25 C in summer and 18 C in winter, so a shorty in the shoulder months and a 3/2 in winter. The beach is 2,200 m long but only 3 to 20 m wide, and from December to February the wide bits fill with families, which is the real constraint here.
Around the Pontal is mangrove and restinga, protected, so no shortcuts through the scrub. There is no rescue for kiters. A 12 m and a 9 m cover an intermediate visitor; the women's set is 7 m and 9 m/10 m.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

The water

Type

sea

Standing depth

Shallow close to shore: calm, family-friendly water.

Tides

The riding does not change with the tide; the width of the beach does.

Temperature

25°C summer · 18°C winter

Wetsuit

Usually rash vest/shorts in summer; shorty in spring/autumn; 3/2 mm full suit is commonly advised in winter and on cold northeast-wind days.

Currents

The Rio Ratones empties beside the Pontal and pushes a strong current there even on days when the bay looks flat. A kiter drowned at that spot in February 2022 and was pulled ashore by other riders.

18–28°C water
Sheltered bay on the north of the island: flat to choppy, no real surf where people kite.

Your level

beginnerintermediateadvanced
Beginners on a NE day: calm water, no big waves. The S front days and the downwinders are for intermediates and up.

Rescue

No public kite rescue and no lifeguard post at the Pontal: it is school support or self-rescue. In the February 2022 drowning there the pulling-out was done by other kiters, with the fire service arriving afterwards.

Hazards riders report 9

  • seasonal beach users
  • wind direction changes require moving toward Pontal
  • Seasonal swimmers and families on a calm-water beach
  • Launch side must change with wind direction around the peninsula
  • Beach width and rigging space can vary by access point, tide and summer crowding
  • Mangrove/restinga and protected natural areas around the Pontal
  • Limited beach infrastructure at some accesses
  • Cold/strong S-front sessions are less beginner-friendly
  • Strong current where the Rio Ratones meets the sea by the Pontal, present even on calm-looking days
Rules & access
2026: no kite-specific municipal or harbour rule is on record for Daniela, and the real constraints are environmental and social. The mangrove at the mouth of the Rio Ratones behind the Pontal lies inside the Carijós ecological station, a strict federal reserve where public visitation is prohibited except for educational purposes under the 2000 protected-areas law, so keep to the sand and the water and take no shortcut through the mangrove. Mangrove and dune-fixing restinga are protected ground in their own right under the forest code. On the beach itself, swimmers and families have the run of it from December to February: rig clear of them.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • NE wind: Daniela beach. S wind: walk or drive round to the Pontal. Decide before you rig.
  • From December to February rig on the wider stretches and keep well away from the families; the beach is 3 to 20 m wide and the swimmers were there first.
  • Pack a 3/2 for winter and for the cold days; a shorty does spring and autumn.
  • Bring water and shade; some of the Daniela and Pontal accesses have nothing.
  • The riding does not depend on tide, but the sand does: check how much beach is left before you lay out lines.
  • If the angle is wrong or the beach is packed, Lagoa da Conceição is the fallback.
  • From FLN take the SC-401 north toward Jurerê and Ponta Grossa, then west to Daniela: 36 km, 45-75 minutes with traffic.
