On the clock

09:00 · 17:00

The summer northeast fills in on most afternoons. Cold-front southerlies arrive with the front, at any hour, and hold for a short window rather than a day. Lessons are booked between 09:00 and 17:00 off the daily forecast.

The marks are the clock times the record names, laid on a 24-hour day. The bar between the first and the last covers those hours; it is not a promise of wind.

Lagoa da Conceicao is the salt lagoon in the middle of Florianopolis and the city's main school base. No surf inside, water flat to choppy, big shallow areas where the schools teach.
The wind is not a trade wind and it does not blow every day: N/NE sea breeze in the warm season, usually afternoons, and S/SSE/SE when a cold front comes through, sometimes past 35 kt in winter. September to April is the season, November to February the strongest for the NE.
The lagoon has many accesses and which shore you rig on depends on the direction that day; get it wrong and you are launching offshore or into dirty wind. Sailboats, jet skis and learner traffic share the water, and it gets gusty on the stronger days.
Water is 27 C in summer and 18 C in winter, so a 3/2 mm for the cold front days. FLN is 15 to 17.5 km away, 20-35 minutes by taxi, and whether the Capitania dos Portos has any kite-specific restriction inside the lagoon in 2026 is unconfirmed.

Typical strength

12-18 kt is the comfortable learning range; front days can exceed 35 kt in winter around Florianopolis.

Good weekly wind opportunities but not a constant trade-wind destination; the lagoon can be gusty, especially when stronger.
September to April is the main season, with November to February strongest for the summer northeast, which comes in on most afternoons. Winter is the least steady stretch but delivers short, hard cold-front southerlies, up to 30-35 kt and cold with it. Averaged over the year, count on roughly three to four days with wind a week.

The quiver, in words

A 12 m and a 9 m cover an intermediate rider of about 75-85 kg through most of the season: the 12 m is the everyday size, the 9 m is for the front days. Lighter riders are pointed at 7 m plus a 9 or 10 m.Under about 11 kt it is a foil or wing day, not a twin-tip day.

Direction to shore

Variable by launch around the lagoon; shore choice depends on wind direction.

Dominant direction

N/NE in the warm season; S/SSE/SE with cold fronts. N and S are the best directions.

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Standing depth

Flat and not deep: a large shallow area you can stand in on the school side, deeper toward the middle of the lagoon. No depth figures have been published.

Tides

Kitesurfing conditions do not depend on tide at the lagoon.

Temperature

27°C summer · 18°C winter

Wetsuit

Usually rash vest/shorts in summer; shorty in spring/autumn; 3/2 mm full suit is commonly advised in winter and on cold northeast-wind days.

18–28°C water
Flat to slightly choppy salt-lagoon water with no surf inside the lagoon. Sandy/shallow sections are used for teaching and progression, while stronger days can be gusty.

Your level

beginnerintermediateadvanced
Beginners use the flat, shallow and school-managed zones; intermediate and advanced riders use the wider lagoon for freeride, foil, internal downwinds and big-air practice. Stronger S/front days and gusts raise the difficulty.

Hazards riders report 9

  • gusts on stronger days
  • shared lagoon traffic
  • choose launch by wind direction
  • Gusty wind on stronger days
  • Sailboats, jet skis and other lagoon traffic
  • School zones and learner traffic
  • Wrong launch choice can make the wind offshore or dirty
  • Winter/cold-front sessions can be strong, cold and short-lived
  • Check water-quality/balneability reports in high season
Rules & access
2026: no kite-specific municipal or port-authority restriction inside Lagoa da Conceicao is published, and the Marinha and municipal legislation registers are not readable online. What binds in practice is local: several shoreline kitepoints are private school grounds that charge a day-use fee, other accesses around the lagoon are public and free, and school lessons run between 09:00 and 17:00. Offshore-wind launches are discouraged locally in favour of onshore or side-shore accesses.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Ask a school which access fits the day's wind before you rig; the wrong shore puts you offshore.
  • Treat S and cold-front days as advanced: colder, stronger, short-lived and gusty.
  • Keep clear of the school teaching zones and watch for sailboats and jet skis mid-lagoon.
  • Pack a 12 m and a 9 m; the 12 m covers most days, the 9 m the front days, and the schools rent the rest.
  • Read the balneability report after heavy rain or in Dec-Feb before you spend a day in the water.
  • Some shoreline kitepoints are private and charge day use; the public accesses around the lagoon are free.
  • 2026 lesson prices run about R$350-400 an hour one-to-one, with ten-hour packages between roughly R$3,200 and R$3,600.
  • Wetsuit by season: shorty or lycra from September to May, a 3/2 mm full suit from May to August and on the cold northeast days.
