When it fills in

No daily build to wait for. The wind is frontal and can arrive at any hour, so the clock that matters is the tide: the groynes are hardest to see at high water, and sessions get planned around that and the light rather than around a sea breeze.

Scheveningen Noorderstrand is The Hague's main surf beach and an official kite spot, which sounds gentler than it rides. The water gets deep fast, there is surf and there is current, including the rip the locals call mui stroming.
Launching and landing happen at the Jumpteam end, and the wind- and kitesurf zone runs north of groyne 42 toward the De Naald monument. The groynes vanish under high water, the sandbanks move from week to week and a shipping fairway sits offshore, so knowing the beach counts for more here than knowing tricks.
Safe directions are N, NW, W, SW, NE. The spot is open all year. In summer it is one of the busiest beaches in the Netherlands, and the sand belongs to swimmers, canoeists and surf schools as much as to you.
Come in spring or autumn for the wind, in winter if you own the neoprene. It is an easy spot to reach by tram and a bad one to learn on.

Typical strength

15-25 kt is the band the spot is rated for and what most sessions here run on. A beach station that reported from 2016 to 2018 averaged 8 kt over all hours with WSW dominant, which is a background figure and not what you rig for.

Clean enough in sea wind from the safe directions, but the beach is exposed and the water is rough. Current, waves and sandbars make it less forgiving than the Dutch lakes and lagoons.
Scheveningen - Noorderstrand is open all year. Spring and autumn hold the wind, while summer belongs to the bathers and the rest of the surf traffic.

The quiver, in words

No local sizing is published. Indicative for 75-85 kg across the 15-25 kt working band: 10-12 m at the bottom end, 9 m through the low twenties, 7 m at 25 and a 5-6 m for the winter storms this beach is ridden in. Wave and foil riders go smaller again.

Direction to shore

N, NW, W, SW and NE are the listed safe wind directions for Scheveningen - Noorderstrand.

Dominant direction

Westerly and southwesterly systems drive most kiteable days on this coast; the listed safe directions are N, NW, W, SW and NE.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

The water

Type

waves

Standing depth

No. Rough North Sea beach that gets deep quickly, with breaking waves and current.

Tides

Tidal North Sea beach. At high water the groynes and strekdammen are hard to spot, and the sandbanks shift enough that the depth near shore changes suddenly.

Temperature

18°C summer · 5°C winter

Wetsuit

Summer water off Scheveningen runs about 17-20 C, winter about 4-6 C. A sealed full suit is normal, with thick winter neoprene, boots, hood and gloves in the cold months.

Currents

Rip current, 'mui stroming' to the locals, plus current running around the groynes. Expect tidal and wind-driven flow on top of that.

7–20°C water
Open North Sea wave spot: broad sand, surf, current and moving sandbars. Nothing like the protected Zandmotor lagoon a few kilometers south.

Your level

not for beginners hereintermediateadvanced
Not a beginner spot: this is a rough North Sea beach. Intermediates need confident deep-water, wave, current and self-rescue skills before going out alone; advanced riders use it for waves, freeride and foiling.

Rescue

No dedicated kite rescue and no guaranteed cover for independent riders. Lifeguards work the flagged bathing sections in the summer season only. Offshore, the coastguard tasks the KNRM lifeboats: 112 for an emergency, and the KNRM Helpt assistance centre on 088-999-6100 when it is a problem rather than a mayday.
The kite association keeps a spot manager and an information point at Jumpteam, reachable at scheveningen@kitesurfvereniging.nl.

Launch

Sand launch and landing at the Jumpteam area on Scheveningen Noorderstrand, at approximately 52.105083, 4.26353. The wind- and kitesurf zone starts north of groyne 42 and runs about 250 m northeast toward the De Naald monument, with room to rig.

Hazards riders report 14

  • Rip currents
  • Groynes that vanish under high water
  • Shifting sandbars causing sudden depth changes
  • Shipping lane nearby
  • Heavy summer beach crowds (swimmers, surfers, canoeists)
  • Rough North Sea surf and larger waves.
  • Treacherous rip/current ('mui stroming').
  • Groynes/strekdammen that can be difficult to see at high water.
  • Nearby shipping fairway; do not ride far enough offshore to reach it.
  • Nearby shipping/fairway; NKV warns not to kite too far offshore into it.
  • Heavy mixed beach traffic with swimmers, surfers, canoeists and surf schools.
  • Cold water and wind chill outside summer.
  • It gets deep within metres of the shoreline; there is nowhere to stand and sort a problem out.
  • The 20 m clearance from groynes and harbour heads is a rule, not a suggestion, and the groynes are the thing you cannot see at high water.
Rules & access
2026: from 1 June to 31 August, and again on 1 January, the beach is zoned. Wind- and kitesurfing belongs between groyne 42 and a point 250 m northeast of it, toward the lighthouse and the De Naald monument; the stretch between the northern harbour head and groyne 42 is for wave surfers and individual canoeists. Start and land at the Jumpteam area. Outside those dates the zoning lifts but the standing conditions hold: between sunrise and sunset, at least 20 m clear of the groynes and both harbour heads, never inside the harbour mouth or under the pier, and never hindering or endangering swimmers. The rules sit under article 5:41 of the Den Haag municipal ordinance, and the beach signage is the version that counts on the day. Do not ride out far enough to reach the shipping fairway.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Walk the beach before you rig: find the groynes, the split between the surf zone and the kite zone, and any current signage.
  • Check the tide state before launching, because the groynes are hardest to see at high water.
  • Keep tricks away from the shoreline; the sandbanks shift and it goes shallow without warning.
  • Set yourself an offshore limit and hold it, because the fairway is out there.
  • Ask at Jumpteam or the information point for the current zone boundaries on your first visit.
  • Park in the paid areas or the garages behind the boulevard; weekday loading in front of Jumpteam is limited to a short morning window.
  • The zoning bites from 1 June to 31 August and on 1 January. Between groyne 42 and 250 m northeast is yours; the stretch toward the harbour is the surfers'.
  • Stay 20 m off the groynes and both harbour heads, and out of the harbour mouth and from under the pier, whatever the season.
  • Save 112 and the KNRM assistance line 088-999-6100 before you go out. There is no kite rescue standing by.
  • Learning is not the point of this beach. Kijkduin-Zandmotor a few kilometres south is where the schools put beginners.
