The spot

What it is

The Speed Spot is the low-tide flat lane in the Dakhla lagoon, on the bank east and south of Dakhla Attitude, and you get to it by camp shuttle, 4x4, boat, or a ride over from a neighbouring camp. What makes it is the sandbar: as the water drops, the bank shelters the surface and lays down mirror-flat lanes for speed runs and powered freeride, with freestyle on the same water. The wind here is offshore.

Who can go

The rest of the Dakhla lagoon is a fine place to learn; this bank is not, and every camp that runs the trip wants deep-water waterstarts and self-rescue before it takes you out. April to September is the reliable window; July and August blow hardest, though Dakhla works outside it in lighter, cooler air. Tide timing, real depth and rescue cover decide the session, and on a good low tide several camps arrive at once and the flat lane becomes a traffic lane.

Standing depth

Depth is the contested part of this spot.The camps that run the low-tide session call the riding lane deep water and want deep-water waterstarts and self-rescue before they take you there; it is reportedly shallow flat water running about 4 km along the bank. A large standing-depth area on the same bank at high tide is used for beginner lessons, which is a different session entirely from the low-tide speed lane.Treat the low-tide lane as deep and non-standing unless the camp you ride with tells you otherwise on the day.

Semi-diurnal, two highs and two lows a day.The range is modest, about 1.3 m between high and low on a neap-leaning September 2026 day at the Dakhla port and closer to 2 m on springs, but it makes or breaks the spot. As the water drops, a bank roughly 40 cm proud emerges over about 2 km and shelters the surface into the flat lane. As it comes back, the flat water goes, and so does the sand you left your bag on.

Conditions

The usable water is created by a sandbar/sand step that shelters the surface at low tide, producing mirror-flat water for speed and freestyle. It is inside the Dakhla lagoon system and protected from ocean swell, with no shorebreak or waves at the spot.

Expect flat water at the correct tide and chop when the tide/wind angle is not right. Shells and exposed sandbanks are common around Dakhla lagoon at low tide, so booties are sensible if walking or launching near exposed bottom.

Provider-dependent, and never assume it. Dakhla Attitude's 2026 session, capped at 16 riders, puts a security boat on site for its own group; KBC's trip leaves its lifeboat at base and requires self-rescue instead; a third camp has rescue boats there only sometimes.

Several Dakhla schools sell rescue vouchers, but confirm the cover reaches this bank at low tide before you count on it. Riding here unattached to a camp means no cover at all.

Rider tips

Ride the dropping tide: the flat lane opens as the bank comes up and the water goes knee-deep.
Do not turn up at high tide expecting the Speed Spot session. The classic flat water is a low-tide feature and nothing else.
Confirm rescue with your own camp before you launch; published accounts disagree about whether a boat is out there at all.
Do not bring a first-timer here. The wind is offshore and the camps ask for deep-water waterstarts and self-rescue.
Pack small for April-September: 7 m or less for the July and August afternoons that touch 30+ kt.
Wear booties for any walk over the low-tide bottom; the shells cut.
Put bags and shoes high up the sand before you launch, because the tide comes back while you are still out.

Fly into Dakhla (VIL) and take a camp transfer or a taxi out to a lagoon resort. From the camps, the Speed Spot is an organised low-tide trip: tractor shuttle, 4x4, boat, or your own kite if you are happy with the offshore angle and the upwind return.

Transfer

25-40 minutes from Dakhla Airport to the lagoon camps around Dakhla Attitude and New Spirit, depending which one. Dakhla Attitude is about 28 minutes and 27.3 km from the airport.
