Laulasmaa: the long version, the launch and the rules

    More on Laulasmaa

The clean directions are west through northwest, side-onshore on the sand; south and southwest get ridden too, but part of the launch sits in the lee of the land on those days, and when it goes northeast the club moves to Lohusalu. The lesson lagoon is shallow, sandy and stays under head height, which is why beginners get sent here. On a light day it is glassy flat, on a strong day rhythmic chop with small waves; it is never a wave spot. The season is May-October, April and November only with thick neoprene, and the shoulder months are windier than midsummer. In June-August the beach fills with swimmers and spa guests and the usable kite area shrinks. There is no live weather station at the spot; the nearest live data is Pakri. One more thing: the official bathing-water class was poor for 2024 and 2025, while the 2026 samples came back very good.

    Getting on the water

Sandy resort-area beach at/near LaSpa and Laulasmaa Surfiklubi on Lahepere Bay, with beach facilities, a beach bar in summer, beach equipment rental nearby and a surf school offering windsurfing, kitesurfing and SUP. Parking and easy beach access are available, though one route involves a medium walk through private property.

    If it goes wrong

No lifeguard. The parish runs no official public beaches, so nothing on this sand is staffed and there is no rescue post or patrol boat; the water at Laulasmaa Spa is sampled for bathing quality, which is a health check and not supervision. In practice the cover is the surf club and the school on the LaSpa beach while they are open, and 112 for anything serious.

    Rules and access

2026: no municipal kite permit, kite zone or seasonal ban. The parish has no official public beaches, but the popular swimming spots including Laulasmaa Spa are water-tested. On the private land behind the beach: no littering, no noise from dusk till dawn.

  2. Kakumäe

    mixed · beginner ok

Kakumäe is Tallinn's west-side city beach on Kakumäe Bay, a sandy public bathing beach that doubles as the after-work kite spot.

The model here carries the month's average wind rather than a count of windy days: it reaches 13.1 kt in January, the strongest month it models for this spot.

Kakumäe: the long version, the launch and the rules

    More on Kakumäe

The wind is synoptic, so you ride when the forecast shows W or NW; WNW/NNW also work, SW is possible but a local call. The bay is 1-2 m deep at the spot and mostly chop with some flat water and the odd small wave. It is a city session, not a trip: people ride here because it is 20 minutes from the airport. From 1 June to 31 August the beach is zoned, surfing on the left, swimming on the right, with lifeguards and buoys, and the marina basin 3 km along the bay is closed to kites. Fansurf runs from the beach itself and Surfy from the marina, which is unusually good school cover for Estonia. The water is cold, 16.1 C as a summer average and 2.7 C in winter, so it is a wetsuit every month of the year. No long-term wind average exists for the spot, and the season is May-October on paper with midsummer the least confirmed part of it.

    Getting on the water

Sandy public beach at Räime tn 52 with changing cabins, shower, seasonal kiosk, free unguarded car parking and bicycle parking; Fansurf operates on the beach, which is long and sandy.

    If it goes wrong

Lifeguards on the beach from 1 June to 31 August, 09:00-20:00 or 10:00-20:00 depending on which 2026 notice you read; check the beach board. The Kakumäe volunteer sea rescue and Surfy both publish local safety guidance. No kite-specific rescue.

    Rules and access

2026: Kakumäe is an official Tallinn public bathing beach with monitored water and lifeguards from 1 June to 31 August. In swimming season the surf zone is the left side of the beach and the swimming zone the right; keep to it. 2026 Tallinn public-beach rules: no pets unless a separate area is marked, no glass. 2026: at the marina 3 km along the bay, surfing is forbidden in and behind the marina basin; that is a different launch from the public beach.

W and NW are the core directions, with WNW and NNW also workable and SW possible.
