Good to know before you go2
- The Kąty Rybackie lagoon riding area is reported shallow (around 1.5 m) with possible fishing nets present
- Much of the spit is protected landscape park and Natura 2000 territory, which can mean access or launching restrictions in sensitive zones — worth checking locally rather than assuming open beach access everywhere
The spots
Kąty Rybackie
Kąty Rybackie is a small fishing village on the Vistula Spit with the Vistula Lagoon on one side and the Baltic/Gulf of Gdańsk on the other.

The model here carries the month's average wind rather than a count of windy days: it reaches 15.2 kt in January, the strongest month it models for this spot.
Kąty Rybackie: the long version, the launch and the rules
More on Kąty Rybackie
The kite and windsurf launch is the lagoon side beside the fishing port: grass to rig on, parking, a WC. What you ride is a small bay, flat rather than surf, about 1.5 m deep, with fishing nets a real possibility. SE is the direction singled out locally because it crosses the whole lagoon and arrives even, while SW-NW is given elsewhere, so ask before you drive out on a forecast. This is not a teaching hub like Hel or Puck Bay, and the Vistula Spit spots are treated as choices for riders who can already look after themselves. The sea beach at entrance 51 is a different thing altogether: exposed Baltic sand, lifeguarded for swimmers in summer 2026, and not the launch.
Getting on the water
Park and rig beside the fishing port: the turn comes just before the port, with about 20 parking places, a sizeable grass area and a WC. The port is on the northwest corner of the Vistula Lagoon at ul. Rybacka 66, and the sea beach is about 2-2.5 km away through the forest.
If it goes wrong
No dedicated kitesurf rescue at the launch. The port has boating infrastructure, which is not the same thing; the closest formal water-safety and forecast contact is the harbour master's office, reachable by phone. Outside the 2026 lifeguarded bathing area at entrance 51 (09:00-17:00, 27 June-31 August 2026), treat every session as self-rescue.
Rules and access
2026: Gmina Sztutowo designates the Katy Rybackie sea bathing area to the right of main beach entrance no. 51, operating 27 June-31 August 2026 with lifeguards 09:00-17:00 and requiring users to follow lifeguards, bathing regulations and flag signals. No 2026 municipal kitesurf permit, launch zone or explicit lagoon-side kite restriction for Katy Rybackie was found. The whole spit and lagoon sit inside the Natura 2000 site Zalew Wislany i Mierzeja Wislana PLH280007 and the Mierzeja Wislana Landscape Park. The Katy Rybackie nature reserve, 102.54 ha with a 62.86 ha buffer, created 1957 and extended in 2000, protects a cormorant breeding colony in the forest west of the village rather than the lagoon water, so it does not close the port launch.
Krynica Morska
Krynica Morska sits on the Vistula Spit with water on both sides: the shallow Vistula Lagoon behind it, open Gdańsk Bay in front.

Krynica Morska: the long version, the launch and the rules
More on Krynica Morska
It is a real kite location that nobody has documented properly. The lagoon-side base by the port at the end of ul. Bojerowców is the everyday setup, a sandy beach with parking, room to rig, lessons and cover on the water. The lagoon runs flat to choppy and shallow enough to stand in across much of it, which is why the teaching happens there; the sea side belongs to riders who already handle chop and exposure. Wind is synoptic Baltic weather rather than anything you can set a watch by, and Poland's practical season is May-September even though the strongest average winds land in the cold months. Westerlies dominate most of the year and blow cross-shore on the lagoon's north shore, southerlies come onshore, northerlies offshore. In July and August treat the guarded swimming beaches and the port conservatively: bathing zones are confirmed there, kite corridors are not.
Getting on the water
The best-documented launch is the lagoon-side watersports base by the yacht club/port at the end of ul. Bojerowców: a sandy beach with parking and space to rig. The town also has long Baltic beaches, but no formal kite launch zone is identified there.
If it goes wrong
ActiveZone's Krynica Morska base keeps constant cover on the water, and students who sail further out can count on a trained motorboat operator.
Rules and access
2026: official sea bathing areas with monitored water quality are designated in Krynica Morska. The Port bathing area is on Gdańsk Bay, 100 m long, open 01/07/2026-31/08/2026 from 10:00-17:00. No municipal kitesurf permit, corridor or seasonal kite zoning rule was found.

What riders say
9 recurring claims
The season is the whole year, and the cold months are the busy ones: sessions get logged in November, December, February and March, and when the lagoon freezes hard the same crowd snowkites it, including a national amateur snowkite round held out on the ice.
consensus×5 riders
Almost all the riding on this stretch of the spit happens at Krynica Morska, on the lagoon beach at the end of ul. Niska next to the seasonal windsurf school and the campsite; Kąty Rybackie is a launch you improvise off a meadow, not a set-up spot.
consensus×4 riders
Light wind is the normal case and the big kite is the one that gets used — 11 to 14 m is standard kit here, and plenty of logged sessions sit at 10-13 knots.
consensus×4 riders
The lagoon shore is shallow for roughly 100 m out — waist to chest deep — so a lost board or a failed water start usually ends in a walk rather than a swim.
consensus×3 riders
The reed belt downwind is the real hazard, not the water: getting blown or dragged past the spot means several hundred metres of tall reed, pools and knee-deep black mud, and it takes long enough that people start looking for you.
consensus×3 riders
It is empty. Four kites counts as a busy session and turning up to find nobody there is normal, which is exactly why the regulars like it.
consensus×3 riders
Wind direction decides which side of the spit you use — the lagoon beach handles everything except north, and when it goes north people cross the trees to the Baltic; from the far shore, south-easterlies are the cue to drive round to Kąty Rybackie.
majority×2 riders
Late May can be unusable on land rather than on water: mayflies hatch in enormous numbers on the lagoon and swarm you while you are packing the kite on the grass.
majority×2 riders
Whether this is a place to learn is properly disputed. The locals point to the shallows, say plenty of people learned on the lagoon and that schools run there; the opposing case is that only a couple of lagoon-side gaps are big enough to launch and land in, that trees and reeds sit right at the water's edge, and that the wind arrives ragged with sudden direction shifts.

- A cormorant breeding reserve, one of Europe's largest, near Kąty Rybackie
- The Vistula Spit Canal, opened September 2022, cut across the spit to give ships a route to Elbląg that bypasses the Russian-controlled Strait of Baltiysk
- Stutthof Memorial Museum in Sztutowo, a former Nazi concentration camp turned museum in 1962, in the same municipality as Kąty Rybackie and only a few kilometres away
- Gdańsk, about 56 km from Kąty Rybackie
History & trivia
- The Vistula Spit straddles the Poland-Russia border, with the northeastern end forming a Kaliningrad exclave and no crossing point between the two sides
- Krynica Morska was first recorded around 1258-1282 as 'Lipa', later known by the German name Kahlberg, became a resort in 1843 and only received Polish city status in 1991
- Kąty Rybackie changed hands repeatedly — Prussia after 1773, the Free City of Danzig from 1919, Nazi Germany from 1939, and back to Poland in 1945

FAQ
Where do people launch on the Vistula Spit?
Both spots favor the lagoon side over the open Baltic: Kąty Rybackie launches beside the fishing port, with a grassy rigging area, parking and a WC, while Krynica Morska rides near the Bojerowców/port area on a sandy beach with parking and rigging space.
Are there kite schools?
Krynica Morska's lagoon-side area near the port has lessons available alongside its sandy beach and parking.
