Mikri Vigla is the kite beach on Naxos and one of the most established Meltemi spots in the Cyclades.
Glyfada is a long sandy bay on the southwest coast of Naxos, between Kastraki and Alyko, with Naxos Kitesurf Club on the sand.
Pori Beach is a wide crescent bay on Pano Koufonisi, 3.5 km from Chora, the island's only town, reached on foot along the coastal trail, by local bus, by kaiki or by car.
Agiassos is the southernmost kite spot on Naxos, on the quiet southwest coast, and it only works when the Meltemi wraps around the island and comes in NW/W cross-shore.

Public bus (KTEL Naxos / naxosbuses.com): two lines serve Mikri Vigla - Line 1 (coastal, via Plaka) and Line 3 (inland, via the villages), ~35 min from Naxos Town, adult fare EUR 2.60, under-6s free, students -25%. Tickets CANNOT be bought on board: buy at the KTEL office at the port in Naxos Town before boarding. Info +30 22850 22291 / info@naxosbuses.com. Timetable in force for summer 2026 is published as 'Bus Schedules 29/06-30/08 2026'.
Taxi: published flat fare Naxos Town -> Mikri Vigla EUR 27 (Kastraki EUR 27, Plaka EUR 15, Agia Anna EUR 13, Agios Prokopios EUR 12, Pyrgaki EUR 32). Surcharges: +EUR 4 pre-booked, +EUR 2 pickup at the port, +EUR 4 pickup at the airport, EUR 30/hour for hourly hire. So airport -> Mikri Vigla pre-booked lands at roughly EUR 31-35, not EUR 20. Example operator: Taxi No 30, Giannis Kavouras, +30 694 77 44 883 (English spoken).
Airport shuttle bus: a dedicated weekday (Mon-Fri) bus line serves Naxos airport, running roughly 08:00-22:00; it does not replace the Mikri Vigla lines and there is no evening/night service down the west coast.
Rental car delivery is the de-facto transfer: local agencies deliver free to Naxos airport and the port, and to hotels (including Mikri Vigla), and take reservations without a credit card - which is why most riders skip a paid transfer entirely and pick the car up on arrival.

'200+ windy days a year' marketing vs riders reporting only 7 kiteable days in 3 weeks
Both are technically true because they count different things. Flisvos's own multi-year table shows 4+ Beaufort on 61-70% of days May-October - that is where the '200+ days' number comes from - but 4 Bft (11-16 knots) is not planning wind for most kiters. The 6+ Beaufort share is only 13.7% in June and 20.8% in July, rising to 27.3% in August and 33.2% in October. So a three-week June trip landing in a weak Meltemi phase and yielding a handful of real sessions is statistically ordinary, not bad luck. Book August-October if strong wind is the point; book June if you want warm, moderate, lesson-friendly conditions.

Distance from Naxos Chora to Mikri Vigla: 12 km vs 18 km
Flisvos's '12 km south of the capital' is the odd one out. The beachfront property that has to give guests driving directions (Oasis Studios) states 18-20 km, the taxi tariff prices Mikri Vigla at EUR 27 - the same band as Filoti and Chalki, well above Plaka at EUR 15 - and the bus takes ~35 minutes. Use 18-20 km / 25-35 min by road; 12 km is roughly the straight line.

Is Mikri Vigla beginner-friendly or 'a bit hard to learn' (2013 rider)?
The disagreement is about which half of the bay and what time of day. The north bay (Parthena) is shallow, flat and side-shore/side-onshore - the schools' teaching water, with the safety property that a rider losing ground drifts onto sand and walks back. The south side (Limanaki/'Sahara') is open water with swell and is not a learning environment. Add the daily curve: mornings are genuinely gentle and that is when lessons run, while a 15:00 arrival in August meets 6+ Bft. A beginner who books afternoon sessions on the south side will indeed find it hard.

'You absolutely need a car' vs guests who never rented one
Both hold, split by where you sleep. Beachfront at Mikri Vigla/Orkos with the kite centre on site and the beach tavernas within walking distance genuinely works car-free - an Orkos Beach guest says exactly that. Anything else, or any wish for a supermarket, an ATM, dinner variety, a no-wind day or a second spot, means a car: bus is two lines with ticketing only at the port office and no useful evening service, and taxis are EUR 27 a leg.

When is the best time to kite at Mikri Vigla?
The Meltemi blows most reliably from mid-May to mid-September, peaking in July-August alongside the biggest crowds; spring and autumn shoulder months keep decent wind with fewer people and better rates.
Is Mikri Vigla suitable for beginners?
The north/Parthena side of the headland has side-onshore wind, sandy access and shallow water suited to lessons and progression, while the south side is choppier for more experienced riders.
Do you need a car?
Yes - the spot, food and the nearest real town are all a drive apart, evening buses are minimal to nonexistent, and a car carries board bags more easily than a scooter.
Where should I base myself?
Stay right at Mikri Vigla or nearby Kastraki to walk to the beach, or base in Naxos Chora (or Agios Prokopios) if you want restaurants, bars and shops beyond kiting.
How do you get there?
Fly into Naxos's small JNX airport (about 20-25 minutes/EUR20 taxi from Mikri Vigla) or into Paros and take a ferry over, or reach Naxos via a 3.5-6 hour ferry from Piraeus.
