The spot

Glyfada is a long sandy bay on the southwest coast of Naxos, between Kastraki and Alyko, with Naxos Kitesurf Club on the sand. There is more room and clearer water here than in the Mikri Vigla scene up the coast, and the beach divides into a lessons area, an independent-rider area and a swimming area.

Wind and terrain

The summer wind is the northerly Meltemi, side-shore at Glyfada, and the bay reads in three strips: flat and shallow on the right, chop in the middle, small waves on the left. The season that holds up is June through September, with N/NW/NE in summer and the occasional southerly in the shoulder months.

What you get and don't

Beginners learn through the school; past that you get chop, jumps, small waves, hydrofoil and wing foil water. What you do not get is cover: no lifeguard on the beach, no municipal rescue, and no official kite zoning, and whether there is reef in the riding area is still unresolved.

Rescue

No lifeguard and no first-aid point on Glyfada. Naxos Kitesurf Club runs a rescue boat and folds rescue into its IKO lesson packages, which covers its own students and renters; nothing public covers anyone else on the beach. Ride with someone, and treat a self-rescue swim to the sand as the plan rather than the fallback.

Call Naxos Kitesurf Club when the forecast looks marginal: the bay often runs 3-5 knots over the models.
Keep off the right-hand school strip unless you are with an instructor; that side is lessons and swimmers.
Bring water, sun cover and basic spares, because the beach is quiet and what is actually open on it is unconfirmed.
Rent a car, scooter or ATV for the gear; buses to the southwest beaches are slow and indirect.
Do not sleep at the beach: no camper vans overnight and no camping at all (2025).
There is no lifeguard and no first aid here. The club's rescue boat is for its own lessons, so an independent rider who loses gear is swimming.
Park at the Faros hotel and restaurant end; the rest of the dune line has no proper access.

Airport

Naxos Island National Airport (JNX) for domestic flights; most international arrivals connect via Athens, Mykonos, or Santorini plus ferry.

Route

Glyfada is on the southwest coast between Kastraki and Alyko, about 15 km south of Naxos Town/Chora on asphalt the whole way.You reach Naxos by ferry or by air; from there a rental car or scooter is the only comfortable way to move gear, though the kite school can arrange a taxi or a transfer.Park by the Faros hotel and restaurant, which is the usual access point to the sand.

Transfer

About 15 minutes by car from JNX to Kastraki beach; allow roughly 20-30 minutes by car from Chora or the port to Glyfada depending on route and traffic.
