Meltemi

10:00

The island pattern is a Meltemi that switches on around 10:00, strengthens through the afternoon to 5-6 Beaufort and dies at sunset, though in a settled spell it runs day and night for a week and morning or sunset sessions become possible. Agiassos only joins in once that flow is strong enough to wrap the southwest tip, so it fills in later and less predictably than the west coast. No Agiassos-specific onset is recorded.

The marks are the clock times the record names, laid on a 24-hour day. The bar between the first and the last covers those hours; it is not a promise of wind.

Agiassos is the southernmost kite spot on Naxos, on the quiet southwest coast, and it only works when the Meltemi wraps around the island and comes in NW/W cross-shore. Long sandy beach, shallow clear water over sand and some rock, chop, small-to-medium waves, tide independent.
That combination reads friendly and is not: the wind is gustier and less reliable than on the west-coast beaches, there is no kite center, no rescue, and a coastal current with a reported southward drift. Access is partly dirt road, parking is limited, and the nearest help is 25-35 minutes away by car in Naxos Chora.
Level ratings run from intermediate with expert appeal to advanced only and self-sufficient; for a rider turning up alone, treat it as advanced. The season is July-August on the narrow reading and June-September on the wider one, inside a Naxos season of May-October. Go for the exploration, with a partner and a self-rescue plan you have practised.
For lessons or a normal session, Mikri Vigla and Orkos are the answer on the other coast.

The quiver, in words

Nothing is measured at Agiassos. On the island's main kite beaches a 75 kg rider spends most of the season on 7-10 m, with 7-12 m covering the range and smaller again on the hours the wind tops 30 knots.Agiassos gets a weaker, wrapped version of the same Meltemi at 12-20 knots, so a 75-85 kg rider should plan on 9-12 m here and carry a 7-8 m for the days the wrap comes in hard. Indicative, derived from island figures rather than from this beach.

Dominant direction

NW to W when the Meltemi wraps around southern Naxos; SW is also listed as a recommended wind direction

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Ratings conflict between intermediate with expert appeal and advanced-only, self-sufficient, no services and no rescue; unconfirmed. The shallow sandy swimming beach does not make this a beginner kite spot.

Rescue

None. No kite centre, no boat, no lifeguard, nothing on the beach. Greek national rules only permit riding above 6 Beaufort where licensed lifeguards and a powered rescue vessel are present, which here means the wind ceiling is set by the absence of both.
The nearest people who could come and get you are the kite centres on the west coast at Mikri Vigla, 25-35 minutes away by road, and they are not a rescue service. A second rider on the beach is the plan.

Launch

Launch from the sandy beach only when the bay is clear and the wind is not gusting offshore; expect a self-managed setup with no kite center on site.

  • Rocks and mixed sand/rock bottom.
  • Coastal current.
  • Dangerous southward drift reported.
  • Partly unpaved or dirt-road access.
  • Limited parking and infrastructure.
  • Very isolated spot on the southernmost corner of the island.

  • Wrapped Meltemi that can be gusty and can shut off as fast as it fills.
  • Rocks and a mixed sand and rock bottom.
  • Coastal current along the south coast, with a reported southward drift.
  • Partly unpaved access road and very limited parking by the track.
  • Above 6 Beaufort the national rules require lifeguards and a rescue boat, and there are neither.
  • Swimmers on a family beach in July and August, with a 200 m keep-off distance that applies here as everywhere.
Rules & access
As of 2026 no Agiassos-specific municipal kite zone or seasonal beach order was found, so the national Greek rules are what apply. Kitesurfing is prohibited at popular and heavily frequented beaches, before sunrise and after sunset, in limited visibility and in severe weather, within 200 m of swimmers, within 200 m of anchored boats, rocks, islets, reefs, buoys and other obstacles, within 1 nautical mile of ports, marinas and fish farms (reducible to 500 m where the local committee allows), within 200 m of the shoreline except past the swimmer-limit buoys, and more than 1 nautical mile offshore.
Above 6 Beaufort riding is only permitted with licensed lifeguards and a powered rescue vessel on hand. Required kit is a helmet, harness with hook, a line knife, a buoyancy or impact vest, a quick release, a safety leash and board retaining leashes, plus a wetsuit between 15 October and 15 May. A kitesurfing licence is required.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Never ride Agiassos alone: bring another rider and a self-rescue plan you have already used.
  • Check the west-coast Naxos wind first; Agiassos needs the Meltemi to wrap around hard enough to reach it.
  • Drive, and leave time for the dirt access at the end; the bus will not get you there with gear.
  • Ask a Naxos school or a local rider about the southward drift and where you get back out before you launch.
  • Take lessons at Mikri Vigla or Orkos; nobody teaches on site at Agiassos.
  • Bring a bigger kite than the west coast asks for. This corner runs 12-20 knots when Mikri Vigla is on 7-10 m.
  • The Meltemi normally starts around mid-morning and builds into the afternoon, so an early arrival mostly buys you a walk on the beach.
  • Helmet, impact vest, line knife and a working quick release are not optional here; they are what Greek law requires and there is nobody to come and get you.
