The spot

Golden Beach, Chrissi Akti on the signs, is a long sandy beach on the southeast side of Paros near Drios, with watersports centres spread along about 700 m of sand and a summer bus that stops there.

Wind shifts with strength

The one thing to know before booking: the Meltemi is side-shore here below about Force 5, and offshore above it. So the strongest days, the ones you came for, are the ones blowing you away from the beach, and the rescue boat is only out while the station is open, 10:00 to 19:00, May to October.

Wind patterns and water

The wind works June to September, usually northerly to northeasterly, calm mornings building through midday into a strong afternoon, with 15-25 knots the normal range inside a Meltemi season that runs from about mid-May to mid-September. Water is sandy and shallow a long way out, flat inside the bay, with chop and small waves outside it.

Who this suits

This is a windsurf beach first. For a first kite lesson go to Pounda on the west coast instead; Golden Beach suits a rider who already goes upwind and can hold a line among sunbeds, swimmers and a busy July and August.

Best seasons

May and June give you space and cooler water, September keeps the water warm with far fewer people.

Generally reliable in summer, but shore-level gusts occur at Golden Beach when the Meltemi is offshore or cross-off near the beach.

June to September are the working months at Golden Beach, inside a broader Meltemi season that runs from about mid-May to mid-September and peaks in July and August. The centre on the beach runs a rescue and recovery boat and its owner holds a lifeguard certification; the station is open daily 10:00 to 19:00 from May to October, which is effectively the window of cover. Outside those hours and outside that season nothing is published.

Greek national rules require lifeguard or authorised powerboat assistance for offshore directions and above the legal Beaufort threshold, which bites here because the strong Meltemi is the offshore case.

Launch

Sandy launch along about 700 m of beach, with the watersports centres spaced across it and parking close to the sand. Several organised sunbed-and-umbrella zones break the beach up in season, with free sand between them, so the practical rigging corridor is whatever the centres keep clear rather than anything drawn on a map.

2026: no Golden Beach municipal or port-authority kite ordinance was traced. Greek national rules apply - no kitesurfing within 200 m of swimmers or inside bathing areas, none inside the shoreline buffer except beyond the marked swimmer buoys, none before sunrise or after sunset, none beyond 1 nautical mile from shore, none in severe weather, and none near ports, marinas, fish farms or obstacles. Launching needs a clear 100 m radius and rental operations must work from marked licensed waterways.

In practice the beach is shared with sunbeds, swimmers and windsurf schools, so the usable launch corridor is set by the centres rather than by signage.

Watch the strength, not just the direction: below Force 5 it is side-shore, above it goes offshore.
Check in with one of the centres before rigging, because in July and August the sunbed rows decide where you can lay out lines.

Bring small kites. The strong Meltemi days here are the offshore ones and there is no local size table to lean on.
For a first kite lesson compare Pounda on the west coast; for waves, Tsoukalia is fifteen minutes by car.
Book lessons and rentals ahead in high season, and launch outside July and August, or early and late in the day, if you want room on the sand.

Getting there

Airport

Paros National Airport (PAS), about 15.4 km / 21 min by road from Golden Beach; Athens (ATH) is the main international gateway with short domestic flights to Paros.

Route

Fly to Paros (PAS) or take a ferry into Parikia from Piraeus, Rafina or the neighbouring Cyclades. By car it is about 25-30 minutes from either the airport or Parikia.The summer bus line runs Parikia-Naoussa-Piso Livadi-Golden Beach-Drios, so the beach works without a car if the timetable suits. Drios is a ten-minute walk away, Piso Livadi about seven minutes by car, Naoussa 20-25.

Transfer

About 25-30 minutes by car from Paros airport or from Parikia port; roughly 55 minutes by bus from Parikia.

Cost level

Medium-high in July and August. The public bus costs about EUR2-4 a trip (2026). A taxi from PAS to Golden Beach is quoted around EUR20-25 (2026), and high-season accommodation and ferry demand are where the money actually goes.

Beachfront hotels, studios and villas are available around Golden Beach/Chrissi Akti, with more tavernas and services in nearby Drios, Piso Livadi, Logaras and Marpissa.

No-wind days

SUP, kayaks and sea bicycles sit on the beach itself. Swim or snorkel at the bay edges, eat in Drios, Piso Livadi or Logaras, go up to Lefkes, see Panagia Ekatontapyliani in Parikia, spend an evening in Naoussa, take a boat out of Piso Livadi or Aliki, or drive to Molos and Kalogeros.
