External renown — how known this place is in the kite world. Not a quality rating.

Neuharlingersiel and Schillig are two low-key East Frisian/Wangerland villages on the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea, each built around a single beach kite station, a campsite and a handful of holiday flats - not resort towns. The Wadden Sea tide decides when you can even get on the water, so trips here run on a tide table more than a forecast.
Good for a quiet, nature-heavy trip with tide-timed sessions; not the place for nightlife or off-the-beach entertainment.

The spot cards

Good to know before you go3

  • Kitesurfing on this coast only happens inside marked zones under the 2023 Wadden Sea Befahrensverordnung - Neuharlingersiel's zone is usable roughly 3.5 hours either side of high water, so plan around the tide table, not just the wind forecast.
  • Neuharlingersiel's small designated swimming area is completely off-limits to kiters.
  • Schillig gets noticeably busier than Neuharlingersiel because it's within easy day-trip range of Wilhelmshaven, Oldenburg and Bremen.

Neuharlingersiel: the long version, the launch and the rules

    More on Neuharlingersiel

The water gets sold as standing depth, and it is for part of the tide, but it is deeper than Dornumersiel next door and around high water you lose the bottom. The tide runs the session: kites and wings are allowed only inside the designated zone, and only in the hours either side of high water. Wind from WSW through north to east is the useful sector. Most of it is synoptic North Sea wind; a summer thermal adds a few knots now and then. The fairway and the ferries are the moving hazard, and the bathing zone is closed to kites. It is smaller than Schillig and feels it: a school, a campsite and a beach bar.

    Getting on the water

Launch from the beach and camping area at Windloop, right by the Neuharlingersiel strand behind the dike. The station sits directly on the beach and the kite meadow is the entry area.

    If it goes wrong

The station on the beach keeps its own rescue boat and picks up riders who lose the bottom at high water and get into trouble, at no charge. That cover exists while the station is open and staffed, which is not all year and not after hours; there is nothing kite-specific outside it. Neuharlingersiel also has a volunteer sea-rescue station of its own, reached through the coastal emergency line on 124 124 from a mobile or VHF 16 for Bremen Rescue, with 112 from land.

    Rules and access

2023: Kitesurfing and winging in the Wadden Sea National Park are limited to designated Kite- und Wingsurfgebiete under the Nordsee-Befahrensverordnung, in force from 28 April 2023. The Neuharlingersiel zone is usable from 3.5 hours before to 3.5 hours after high water, and the bathing zone stays closed to kiters. Before 2023 the informal window was about 3 hours either side of high water, 4 hours with the right wind.

Schillig: the long version, the launch and the rules

    More on Schillig

Most mainland Wadden Sea launches are mud; here there are dunes, a sandy bottom and a standing-depth zone covering about two thirds of the kite area, and riders can reportedly stand about 1 km offshore even at high water. The beach faces northeast, so NE is onshore, N and E cross-on, NW and SE side to cross-shore, and S is where it turns cross-off; the kite zone is set up for N, NE, E, SE and S, with NW through E to SSO as the wider working range. Plan on about 3 hours before and after high water. A corridor out to the Watt edge can stretch a session past that when depth and direction allow, but do not assume it; ask at the school. It gets crowded, partly because it works on the east and south wind days that shut down other Ostfriesland spots and partly because Oldenburg and Bremen are an easy drive. The rigging meadow is shared with children's kites, and riding outside the marked National Park kite zone brings penalties. Spring and autumn are the season; summer is warmer, but the wind breaks run longer and the beach fills with bathers.

    Getting on the water

Rig on the large kite/drachen meadow, then carry through the small dunes to the sandy beach. Inexperienced kiters should carry the kite in hand and launch only at the beach rather than on the busy meadow.

    If it goes wrong

Through the bathing season the beach is watched: a stationary water-rescue station at the Badestrand run under the ZWRD-K coastal service, with towers on the campsite beach and on the sand beach, plus a DLRG Wangerland crew covering Horumersiel and Schillig from the shallow-draft rescue boat Willi Roosenboom at bathing times. The season runs from mid or late May to early or mid September, one boat crew on weekdays and two at weekends, weekends only outside the peak. Watch hours are 08:00 to 20:00, and bathing supervision follows the tide, from 2 hours before to 2 hours after high water. None of this is a kite service, and in April or October there is nobody on the sand. Off-season and out-of-hours the call is 112, which goes to the Leitstelle Friesland/Wilhelmshaven and can put out the DLRG inflatable, the sea-rescue boat stationed at Horumersiel and air rescue; that is what came for a kitesurfer left in the water off Schillig when the wind quit in October 2025. The school on the beach also runs accompanied sessions for riders who would rather not go out alone.

    Rules and access

2023/2026: Kiting and winging in the Wadden Sea National Park are limited to designated Kite- und Wingsurfgebiete under the Nordsee-Befahrensverordnung, in force since 28 April 2023. The approved Wangerland kite areas are shown on local map extracts and on-site signs; private kiters are welcome, private instruction is prohibited, and riders unsure of the boundary should ask the local school team. At Schillig the working window is about 3 hours before and after high water, in practice +/- 3 hours around high water, with a corridor to the Watt edge for tide-independent riding in suitable conditions.

Getting there & around

Car neededEffectively yes - these are small coastal villages on rural Lower Saxony roads with no rail link to the beach itself; camper vans are the standard way visiting kiters get around the region and combine several spots.
Road quirksNeuharlingersiel's harbour is the ferry port for the island of Spiekeroog, so the small local channel sees ferry traffic; kiters using the fairway there in westerly wind are expected to yield to the (only two to three a day) ferries.

Seasons beyond windKitable close to year-round, though several Wadden Sea zones close seasonally under nature-park rules; spring and autumn are the quieter high season for kiters, while the school summer holidays (roughly late June to August) bring the beach-tourist crowds.

What riders say

7 recurring claims

  1. The session length is set by the tide, not by how long you want to ride: roughly three hours either side of high water and that is it, because outside that window the water has walked off and left mud.

    consensus×5 riders

  2. Riding is only legal inside a marked kite zone, and the zone was won by negotiation with the national park rather than granted - which is why locals get sharp about people riding a few kilometres down the beach outside it.

    consensus×4 riders

  3. The beach and parking charges are the running argument. €7.50 a day landed in 2007 and felt like a rip-off at the time; by 2019 a season ticket was quoted at €130 for parking plus €45 for the beach, and people still show up anyway.

    consensus×4 riders

  4. Schillig itself is comfortable in a way German North Sea spots often are not: grass to lay a kite out on, sand right in front of it, hot showers afterwards, a school and a shop on the beach.

    consensus×3 riders

  5. This is a coast people ride all year, not a summer destination - the winter threads are as thick as the August ones, including snowkiting on the same beaches.

    majority×4 riders

  6. Neuharlingersiel is the harsher of the two. In north-northwest the wind blows straight onshore into a stone and concrete edge with no run-off, and a rider who could not release her bar in 2012 was flown out by helicopter.

    majority×3 riders

  7. It is not a crowded coast by German standards, but Schillig is the busier of the pair because it is the nearest good water to the cities behind it.

Scene & life

VibeQuiet and family/school-tourist oriented rather than party-driven; Neuharlingersiel's Windloop beach bar is singled out as a genuinely relaxed 'beach flair' spot rare on this coast, with a younger crowd than the area's typical tourist resorts.
Must tryEast Frisian tea ceremony - strong black tea taken with rock sugar (Kluntje) and a swirl of cream, stirred counter-clockwise by tradition - a genuine regional ritual best experienced at a proper Ostfriesland tea house rather than skipped as a gimmick

History & trivia

Scene & life

  • Neuharlingersiel has been an officially recognised Nordseeheilbad (state-certified North Sea health resort) since 1996.
  • Schillig sat at the strategically important entrance to the Jade estuary and was an Imperial German Navy outpost from the 1870s; a mutiny among the fleet anchored off Schillig in October 1918 fed into the Kiel sailors' revolt that helped end World War I.

Itinerary idea

Camp or hostel at Neuharlingersiel for the mellower Windloop scene and Spiekeroog ferry access; shift to Schillig for the biggest standing-depth zone and easterly/southerly wind days - tide chart in hand either way.

FAQ

Which spot is more beginner-friendly, Neuharlingersiel or Schillig?

Schillig has a very large standing-depth zone with a sandy bottom, letting riders stand far offshore, while Neuharlingersiel is deeper overall and not reliably standing-depth at high water.

Is Neuharlingersiel usable for training?

Yes, it offers shallow-water training periods and freeride water, but it is deeper than nearby Dornumersiel and cannot be treated as standing-depth at high tide.

Is there a kite school at these spots?

Neuharlingersiel is centred on the Windloop kite and windsurf station at the beach and camping area.
