Falckensteiner Strand is Kiel's beach: a long strip of Baltic sand on the west shore of the Kieler Förde, with the kiting at the lighthouse end by Friedrichsort.

East or north wind is what you want. Anything from north round to southeast arrives clean across the fjord, south is often gusty, and westerlies are blocked by the higher land behind the beach, so a west forecast is a day off here. The water is shallow standing depth, flat to choppy, widest in the bay by the lighthouse, and it is full of stones and shells, with bigger stones near the surf school. Bring booties. In east wind the current reportedly gets strong, worse by the bridge than by the lighthouse, and the Förde shipping lane passes a few hundred meters out near the Friedrichsort narrows, so this is a beginner beach with consequences. Water is about 17.7 C in summer and 3.9 C in winter. Kiting is banned in the Westwind school area and the bathing zone; the boundaries are on the signs at the beach, read them before you rig.
Getting on the water
Wide sandy beach with the kiting at the Friedrichsort lighthouse end, away from the watersports station at the north end. Paid parking at the main beach in summer, about 300 m back from the water, and a small paid car park near the lighthouse. From Kiel take the B503 north over the canal, exit at Schilksee, turn into Koppelberg, then Palisadenweg and Falkenhorst, which drops down the hill to the beach.
If it goes wrong
1,860 m of the beach is supervised for bathing, with a further 660 m unsupervised and a 300 m dog beach. The water rescue crew sits at the main tower and is there for swimmers, not for a kiter downwind. Beach watch 0431 39 12 03; the watersports station is on 0431 24 83 872 or 0170 58 41 800. Plan on self-rescue, and keep the shipping traffic through the Friedrichsort narrows in mind.
Rules and access
2026: no kiting inside the watersports school's training area or the bathing zone, with the boundaries set by the signs on the beach. Dogs and horses are barred from Falckensteiner Strand from 1 April to 31 October except on the animal beach between Schilksee and Falckenstein, so the main strand is off limits to them through the whole season.
Laboe is the school spot of the Kieler Förde: east shore, right beside the U-995 submarine and the Marine-Ehrenmal, with a knee- to hip-deep standing area about 1 km wide and 500 m long and sandbanks that keep the inner bay flat.

It is a lesson and freeride bay, not a wave spot. Which wind is best depends on where you launch: southwest is the standard answer, north/northeast leaves a mirror-flat strip behind the stone jetty for freestyle and big air, and south/southeast blows offshore at the school launch and can be partly gusty. Learn where the deep channel is before you ride laps; it is where the U-boat was brought ashore and the bottom drops away without warning. After a long southwest blow the bay can be too shallow to ride at all. Water is 17.6 C in summer and 3.9 C in winter, so it is a full wetsuit most of the year and 5 mm in the cold months. Between May and September, in good conditions, it is one of the fullest spots around Kiel, and the shipping fairway further out is no place to be while you are still learning.
Getting on the water
The school hut stands at Strandstrasse 33, right beside the U-995 submarine and the Marine-Ehrenmal, with its own access to the water; parking next to the station is free for its customers, while the public beach strip is fee-paying in season. Where you rig matters: from 15 March to 31 October the bylaw bans rigging and de-rigging kite gear on the Kurstrand and on the Freistrand up to the level of the U-boat, which leaves the sand north of the U-boat for independent riders.
If it goes wrong
The bathing beach is watched by DRK Wasserwacht lifeguards through the bathing season. That covers the Kurstrand, not the whole bay, and there is no kite rescue boat. The school beside the U-boat is the other presence on the sand: open daily 10:00-18:00 in April and October and 09:30-19:00 from May to September, phone +49 4343 496 396. Emergencies go through 112.
Rules and access
The beach bylaw the municipality still publishes in 2026 was signed on 13 June 2012, and it is explicit about kite gear: rigging and de-rigging (kite-)surf equipment on the designated Kurstrand, and on the Freistrand up to the level of the U-boat, is not allowed between 15 March and 31 October. Flying a steerable kite, model aircraft or any other flying object on the Kurstrand is banned from 09:00 to 19:00 in the same window. Dragging craft onto the beach or storing them there needs written permission unless the section is marked for it. The Kurstrand runs from the harbour toward the U-boat museum as far as Strandstrasse 64 and is fee-paying from 15 March to 31 October, so being on it means holding a Kurabgabe or a beach ticket; the Freistrand starts at Strandstrasse 66 and runs to the municipal boundary, and the dog beach is north of the U-boat. Dogs are off every other section from 15 March to 31 October. The Amt Probstei can grant exemptions with conditions. A breach can cost up to 500 euro and get you sent off the beach. No kite-zone map exists: the bylaw works from street addresses, and where the school and bathing areas sit on the day is settled at the hut.
Heidkate is a Baltic groyne beach on the south side of the Kieler Bucht, about 30 minutes from Kiel: fine sand, a thin dune belt, a big natural parking area behind the dike by the small light, and a row of stone groynes that decide where you can ride.
In seasonApr to Oct
The model here carries the month's average wind rather than a count of windy days: it reaches 16.3 kt in January, the strongest month it models for this spot.
More on Heidkate
It is a wave and chop spot, not a lagoon. The directions to come for are west through northwest and northeast through east, sideshore to side-onshore, with small to moderate waves bending in over the sandbank about 200 m out; you can stand for roughly 20 m off the beach and then it drops away. When the wind goes too far south it turns gusty and less clean, and the move is to Laboe or Kitzeberg. The rule that matters: the two beach sections between groynes 24-26 in front of the surf school are windsurf-only and kiting there is banned, though the numbering is disputed (groynes 4 and 5 also turns up), so trust the signs on the day. Bathers have priority and summer collisions are a known problem. This is for intermediate and advanced riders who can handle groynes, stones near shore, bathers and a beach that is busier and more exposed than Fehmarn's shallow spots.
Getting on the water
Access from the large natural parking area behind the dike near the Heidkate light, reached via B502 and K33. Rigging is on the wide grass strip in front of the beach, which is the easy part; the constraint is where you may then go. Groynes are numbered 2 to 18 running east from the Wendtorfer Schleuse, the surfing section sits between groynes 4 and 6, and kiters must stay out of the windsurf-only sections in front of the surf school. The stone groynes stand close together, so you steer around them to reach open water.
If it goes wrong
Two beach sections are watched by DLRG lifeguards in the main season, and their quarters are in the multi-purpose building on the parking area right of the K33, next to the Deichterrassen restaurant. Nothing is watched outside those sections or outside the season, and there is no kite rescue boat. The surf school container is the other pair of eyes: station running 15 April to 3 October 2026, open daily 10:00-18:00 in the main season and weekends in the pre-season, kite line +49 152 03161737. Emergencies go through 112.
Rules and access
2026: the two beach sections between groynes 24-26 in front of the surf school are reserved for windsurfers and kiting there is prohibited; bathers always have priority, and the dike and its grass must not be damaged. The numbering is disputed - a second reading puts the surf beach and school between groynes 4 and 5 - and the beach plan the municipality publishes, dated July 2022, numbers the groynes 2 to 18 running east from the Wendtorfer Schleuse, marks the surfing section between groynes 4 and 6, two supervised bathing sections further east, two boat sections, the dog beach at the western end and a kite-flying area on the green strip behind the beach. An offshore dashed boundary on that plan is labelled 'surfing only 1.9. to 30.5.', so part of the water is closed to sailing craft through June, July and August. Walking on the dunes or the dune grass is banned year-round for coastal and nature protection; use the marked gaps. Parking behind the dike is charged from 1 April to 31 October - car 1 euro for an hour, 3 euro for three, 6 euro for a day ticket 08:00-20:00, 20 euro for a night ticket 20:00-08:00, with campervans and cars with trailers at 2, 6, 9 and 20 euro - and from 1 November to 31 March a car day ticket is 2 euro. Camping and sleeping in the car on that parking area are not allowed. Read the signs on the beach before rigging.
Bülker Leuchtturm is the wave and strong-wind freeride spot on the exposed headland north of Strande, at the mouth of the Kiel Fjord.
In seasonno month named for this spot
modelled: days with three hours in a row at 12 kt or more, between 06:00 and 19:00 local
More on Bülker Leuchtturm
Keep it separate from Strande beach next door, which is windsurf-only with kiteboarding not permitted; kiting belongs to Bülk itself, where there is parking, toilets and room to rig near the water. The headland has clean exposure from southwest through east to northeast with no wind shadow, and northwest works after a walk around the lighthouse to the sideshore side. Strong easterly is the session people come for, with waves up to about 1.5 m; northeast gives shorter, steeper ones. The water is deep and there is no standing area, so this is not a place to learn. Stoller Grund, farther out, is a different proposition in very strong wind: offshore, a lot of current, and no place for anyone who is not equipped for it. Surface water runs around 18.7 C in August and 2.6 C in February, and nobody has published best months for Bülk, so you ride it when the right system turns up.
Getting on the water
Launch by the Bulk lighthouse on Bulker Huk, reached by following Bulker Weg north through Strande, past the Surf Club Kiel parking areas and on to the lighthouse. Free parking right at the shore, toilets and space to rig near the water. The beach is stony and the entry is stony, with several flat stone groynes lying in the water, so shoes are worth the bother.
If it goes wrong
No lifeguard and no kite-specific cover on this headland. Sea rescue is the German lifeboat service through MRCC Bremen: VHF channel 16, callsign Bremen Rescue, +49 421 536 87 0, or 124 124 from a German mobile close to the coast. 112 also connects if you ask for the sea rescue centre. Getting a boat here from the Kiel Fjord takes time, so treat Stoller Grund as somewhere you do not need one.
Rules and access
2026: the Strande surf beach is windsurf-only, with kiteboarding not permitted, while Bulk itself is posted for Windsurfen & Kiten. Follow the local watersport signs and do not launch from the windsurf-only Strande section. Separately, bathing is prohibited around the lighthouse, in a zone running about 1.6 km northwest and about 0.8 km south, because of the sewage works outfall to the north; the ban is written for bathers and it is not clear whether it covers watersports, and the year of the current signage is unconfirmed.
Grönwohld is a campsite beach on the south side of Eckernförder Bucht, in Schwedeneck, with a sandbank offshore that keeps the inside shallow and mostly flat; in stronger wind you get chop and small waves over the bar.
In seasonMar to May, Sep to Nov
The model here carries the month's average wind rather than a count of windy days: it reaches 16.4 kt in January, the strongest month it models for this spot.
More on Grönwohld
The best months are March to May and September to November, when the westerlies come through on the fronts, strong and gusty; northerly wind comes in clean off the Baltic Sea and is steadier. The water stays flat up to about 23 kt. Easterly wind is the caveat. It narrows the beach and the bottom drops away fast a few steps out, so on an easterly day this is not the beginner spot you would expect from the shallow-water reputation. Launch at the west end of the camping-area beach by the school and stay off the bathing beach in front of the campsite, which is packed in July and August. For a small Baltic spot the facilities are unusual: camping, toilets, showers and food right on the beach, plus a watersports school, and the parking is a walk away.
Getting on the water
Launch from the west end of the camping-area beach near the school; avoid the packed beach in front of the camping area.
If it goes wrong
No lifeguard post and no confirmed water-watch at the campsite beach. In season the watersports school sits at the west end of the sand and is the only help actually on the spot, on 04308 183351; outside the April-October campsite season there is nobody. The nearest sea-rescue crew is the volunteer station across the bay at Eckernfoerde, reached on 124 124 from a mobile or on VHF 16 for Bremen Rescue, with 112 from land.
Rules and access
2026: kite only where the school is and stay away from the packed beach in front of the camping area; watch local signs and show consideration around the resident surf school during the season.
Surendorf is on Eckernförder Bucht at Schwedeneck, and the wind is mostly frontal: west-sector depressions from autumn to spring, averaging about 15-16 kt in January-February and dropping to about 10 kt from May to August.
In seasonMar to May, Sep to Nov
modelled: days with three hours in a row at 12 kt or more, between 06:00 and 19:00 local
Ringed months are the ones riders and schools name: Mar, Apr, May, Sep, Oct, Nov.
More on Surendorf
The kite zone is roughly 200 m wide and sits about 300 m east of the water-sports lane; the old entry beside the kite school has been off limits since summer 2014, so do not rig where the older photos show people rigging. Two sandbanks lie off the beach, the water is flat to choppy over them, and a strong northeast wind puts small waves on the sandbar. The first 100 m reportedly shelve gently at standing depth, though a competing claim says there is almost no shallow water here; unconfirmed either way. NE and ENE work as well, and a summer NE day can bring a thermal push, but summer is the light season. The facilities are the reason to bring the family: DLRG post, toilets, camping, a water-sports station, food and paid parking set back from the sand. In July and August the beach is packed with bathers and the boat lane is busy, and a military restricted area sits about 400 m to the left. Come in March to May or September to November, and check the kite-zone signs before you rig, because the boundary has moved before.
Getting on the water
The entry is to the right of the long jetty. Beach chairs fill the sand directly in front of the car park, so free ground is a little to the left or right of it. The kite zone is roughly 200 m wide and sits about 300 m east of the 200 m water-sports lane. Parking is the paid car park in front of the campsite, 100-200 m from the water; the car park at the village entrance is further back again, about 400 m out.
If it goes wrong
A DLRG station and a water-sports station are on the beach; the local school reportedly has a motorboat and can fetch beginners quickly in an emergency.
Room to rig
large outside bathing season, constrained by zones and beach users in season
Rules and access
2026: the municipality describes an approximately 200 m wide water-sports lane for windsurfers and SUP, with a roughly 200 m wide kite zone about 300 m further east reserved for kite sports. Stay inside it and out of the swimming and boat areas. Since summer 2014 the old entry in front of the kite school has been closed to kiting, and riders were pushed toward the dog beach under the cliff; the cliff builds a wind block on angled onshore wind, which is why that fallback is poor. The signs on the beach are the authority if they disagree with any map you brought.

7 recurring claims
Laboe is the group's steady beginner base, but the stretch in front of the swimming hall is closed to kites from 15 March to 31 October, the boundary is a line of white buoys most people only notice once it is laid, and after a long southwesterly the water gets pushed out of the bight until there is not enough depth left to ride.
consensus×4 riders
Falckenstein in southeast wind has a bad reputation that keeps getting confirmed: gusty enough that measured wind swung between 10 and 26 knots second by second, and the usual advice is to drive further out instead.
consensus×3 riders
Heidkate is a groyne field. Stone jetties every 50 metres, a standing area only about 50 m wide before it drops away, and the two bays in front of the school reserved for windsurfers with kiting banned there.
consensus×3 riders
Strande proper is out - buoyed bathing area - and the kiteable part is further along toward the Bülk lighthouse, where there is a gravel car park, a snack stand and about 30 to 50 metres of standing depth. The sewage works next to it is the thing people make jokes about and then mention the bad water readings.
consensus×3 riders
Surendorf was hit with a kite ban across the whole beach in June 2014, signs from the front all the way to the dog beach, leaving only a corridor near the water sports school - and long-stay campers who had already paid for the season found out mid-season.
consensus×3 riders
The whole thing only works with a car. Each beach takes a different wind, the answer to a bad forecast at one is a drive to another, and when nothing on the circuit works people write off the day and head for Fehmarn or Damp.
consensus×3 riders
At Falckenstein the summer bathing zone and the parking machines overlap exactly: 10:00 to 16:00, May to September - which is also when you are not supposed to be on the water there.
majority×2 riders
Which of these spots suits beginners?
Laboe is well-established with a large knee-to-hip-deep standing area over sandbanks, and its inner bay is described as mostly flat and beginner-friendly.
What is the best wind direction?
East to north-sector wind is generally favoured, cited directly for Falckensteiner Strand and, as west through north, for Heidkate.
Are there rules or restricted zones?
At Surendorf, kiters must launch from a designated kite zone about 300 m east of the water-sports lane, since the former school-side entry stopped being allowed in summer 2014; at Strande near Bülk, kiteboarding is reported as not permitted, unlike neighbouring Bülker Leuchtturm itself.
Is there a kite school in the area?
Laboe is a well-established school and kitesurf spot on the east side of the Kieler Förde.
Out of ten, one place against another. The percentage beside a figure is how much of this record that figure had to work from, so a high score on a thin record is a thin score.
