Grönwohld is a campsite beach on the south side of Eckernförder Bucht, in Schwedeneck, with a sandbank offshore that keeps the inside shallow and mostly flat; in stronger wind you get chop and small waves over the bar.
The best months are March to May and September to November, when the westerlies come through on the fronts, strong and gusty; northerly wind comes in clean off the Baltic Sea and is steadier. The water stays flat up to about 23 kt. Easterly wind is the caveat.
It narrows the beach and the bottom drops away fast a few steps out, so on an easterly day this is not the beginner spot you would expect from the shallow-water reputation.
Launch at the west end of the camping-area beach by the school and stay off the bathing beach in front of the campsite, which is packed in July and August. For a small Baltic spot the facilities are unusual: camping, toilets, showers and food right on the beach, plus a watersports school, and the parking is a walk away.

Character

synoptic

fills in: Frontal wind with no daily rhythm to plan around: it arrives with the weather system, can hold through the night and can equally die at midday. Nothing local has been measured, so read the gradient forecast rather than a time of day.

Typical strength

No formal statistical average is available. The water stays largely flat/wave-free up to at least a moderate 23 kt; expect stronger, gustier westerlies during autumn-to-spring frontal passages and steadier, more even wind from northern sectors.

Northerly wind comes in clean off the bay and is even; the fall-to-spring westerlies come with the depressions and are gustier.
Fall-to-spring westerlies are stronger and depression-driven, with rarer E/NE days from spring to fall. NE and SW winds can build a stronger sea state in Eckernförder Bucht.

The quiver, in words

Indicative, worked back from the wind band rather than from a count of what riders rig. A 75-85 kg rider covers the ordinary bay days on 11-13 m, moves to 9-10 m once it holds 18-22 knots, and wants 7-9 m for the autumn and winter fronts that run past 23 knots and start putting chop over the bar.The westerlies come through gusty, so take the smaller of any two sizes you are torn between.

Direction to shore

N to ENE are onshore to side-onshore by local shoreline inference; W to NW are cross-shore to side-onshore; south-sector winds are less documented for this exact launch.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

The water

Type

Baltic Sea bay beach with sandbank, shallow water, flat water, chop and small waves

Standing depth

Large shallow area / standing-depth zone reported; Kitedrop warns that with easterly wind the water gets deep very quickly, making it only conditionally suitable for beginners.

Tides

Tide independent

Temperature

20°C summer · 3.8°C winter

Wetsuit

Wetsuit needed nearly all year; shorty/normal suit in summer, thick suit in winter.

4–19°C water
A big shallow area, flat to choppy, with small waves on the sandbar once the wind is up. The offshore sandbank is what makes the inside safe enough for beginners and children. The beach itself is sand and stones.

Your level

beginnerintermediateadvanced
Beginners are fine at Grönwohld in westerly and northerly wind, on the shallow inside behind the sandbank. In easterly wind the water gets deep fast and the beach goes narrow, so beginners should sit it out or go with the school.

Rescue

VHF 16

No lifeguard post and no confirmed water-watch at the campsite beach. In season the watersports school sits at the west end of the sand and is the only help actually on the spot, on 04308 183351; outside the April-October campsite season there is nobody.
The nearest sea-rescue crew is the volunteer station across the bay at Eckernfoerde, reached on 124 124 from a mobile or on VHF 16 for Bremen Rescue, with 112 from land.

Launch

Launch from the west end of the camping-area beach near the school; avoid the packed beach in front of the camping area.

Rules & access
2026: kite only where the school is and stay away from the packed beach in front of the camping area; watch local signs and show consideration around the resident surf school during the season.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Launch at the west end of the camping beach, next to the school, and stay off the bathing beach in front of the campsite.
  • Look at the school's signs when you arrive in season; the kite area is where the school is.
  • On an easterly forecast treat it as an intermediate spot: the beach is narrow and the water is deep a few steps out.
  • In July and August the beach in front of the campsite is packed with bathers; go early or ride the shoulder months.
  • Parking is a fair walk from the launch, so pack what you can carry in one trip.
  • The campsite is open April 1 to October 31; outside that window plan on no facilities.
  • The school on the beach is the only cover here: 04308 183351 in season, 124 124 for sea rescue in the bay.
  • Water peaks under 19 C in August and sits near 3-4 C in winter, so the suit is heavier than the sheltered-bay look suggests.

FAQ

Is Grönwohld suitable for beginners?

It is listed for all levels thanks to a large shallow sandbank area, but easterly wind is a caveat because the water there gets deep quickly and the beach narrows.

What is the wind like?

Southwest through northwest wind is most common and enters fairly evenly, with the best conditions from fall-to-spring depression-driven westerlies.

When is the best time to go?

March to May and September to November are given as the strongest months, while stronger sea states can build in northeast and southwest wind.

Are there rules or launch guidance?

Yes, kiters are asked to launch from the west end of the camping-area beach near the school and avoid the packed bathing beach in front of the campsite.

Are there kite schools nearby?

Yes, Wassersport Schwedeneck and Segelsport Grönwohld are based near the spot.
