When it fills in

Synoptic wind, so there is no fill-in hour to wait for: it is there when you arrive or it is not. The exception is the fair-weather easterly, which needs the day's heating before the narrowing bay starts funnelling it, and no local hour has been recorded for that either.

Lindhöft is a sand-and-pebble beach on the south shore of Eckernförder Bucht near Noer, and the reason to come is the Düseneffekt: in an easterly the narrowing bay squeezes the wind, and on fair-weather east days in early summer and autumn Lindhöft can have more wind than the exposed outer-coast spots.
The water is standing-depth for roughly the first 50 m out to a sandbank, flat to choppy, with small waves in stronger wind and proper bay waves over the sandbank in a northeast blow.
The sideshore sectors are NE/E and W/NW; southerly is disputed, and on this shore it means offshore and gusty, so ask before launching in anything with S in it. Entry is over pebbles and larger stones, and the launch area is small with bystanders on it. The spot is sensitive.
From 1 May to 30 September it is a bathing beach: rig outside the bathing beach and ride from one of the two watersport zones 110 m right and left of the beach access, park in the larger area about 200 m away because the spot parking is no longer tolerated, and never cross the fenced dune in front of it.
Best months are April, May, September and October, when the depressions run; summer is lighter. Water is 18.7 C in August and 2.6 C in February, so a wetsuit nearly all year.

Typical strength

Whatever the depression delivers. From autumn to spring any strength is possible, summer is the lightest stretch of the year, and no measured local figure in knots has been published for the bay.

Synoptic Baltic wind with a local boost in easterly fair-weather setups: a Düseneffekt in the narrowing bay during east wind can give Lindhöft better wind than more exposed outer-coast spots during easterly thermic weather.
April, May, September and October are listed as best months, with fall-to-spring depressions strongest while summer is lighter. Local thermic/Düseneffekt conditions can occur in early summer and autumn.

Direction to shore

Sideshore in the NE/E and W/NW sectors from the south-shore launch; southerly wind is disputed and comes in offshore or gusty.

Dominant direction

Reported working ranges differ: NE to WSW; NE/ENE/E best with SW-WNW/NW as the main sector; and NNE, NE, ENE, E, W, WNW and NW. In practice the sectors that work are SW to NW and NE/E. A reported 'SSW to NW' range is probably a misprint for WSW, since SSW is offshore on this shore.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

The water

Type

Baltic Sea bay beach / sandbanks

Standing depth

A shallow bank runs roughly 50 m out from an evenly shelving beach and ends behind an offshore sandbank, with a second bank further out. How much of it you can actually stand in is disputed: some riders find little more than the narrow banks themselves and a hard, stony entry.

Tides

Tide independent; no meaningful tidal riding factor is confirmed for Eckernförder Bucht.

Temperature

18.7°C summer · 2.6°C winter

Wetsuit

Wetsuit nearly all year: shorty or normal neoprene in summer, thick neoprene in winter. Surface water around Kiel averages 18.7 C in August and 2.6 C in February.

4–19°C water
Sand-and-pebble beach on the south side of Eckernförder Bucht. The water is usually flat to choppy with small waves in stronger wind, and northeast wind can build more noticeable bay waves over the sandbank.

Your level

not for beginners hereintermediateadvanced
The sandbanks would suit a beginner, but the stones, the swimmers and the offshore/gusty southerly setups do not. Call it intermediate and up unless you are with an instructor and the zones are clear.

Rescue

No lifeguard post and no water-rescue station is listed for Lindhoft, bathing season included, so assume self-rescue and the 112 emergency number. The shallow bank in front of the beach means most launch trouble ends as a walk back in; past the sandbank nothing is watching the water.

Launch

Access from Lindhoft/Strandweg on the south side of Eckernforder Bucht. Parking at the spot itself is no longer tolerated: use the larger parking area about 200 m away and walk down on the right-hand side of it, because the fenced dune project in front of the parking must not be crossed.Rigging happens on narrow strips of shell and sand outside the bathing beach, and the water-sports section starts roughly 100 m to the right of the parking. Tube kites should go up with the rider already standing in the water; ram-air kites can be self-launched off the sand.

  • overcrowded paid parking in summer
  • must stay within the water-sports zone
  • Pebbles and larger stones near the beach and first metres of entry.
  • Swimmers and a marked bathing zone from 1 May to 30 September.
  • Small launch/landing area and bystanders on the beach.
  • Limited parking; roadside parking can lead to tickets and local conflict.
  • Protected dune / Treibseldüne area between parking and beach must not be crossed.
  • Northeast wind can build waves over the sandbank.
  • Southerly wind direction is disputed and may be offshore/gusty at this south-shore spot.
  • Slippery stones on the way in, and shallow water that in places is limited to the narrow banks
  • No lifeguard or rescue station at the beach
Rules & access
2026: Lindhoft is a bathing beach from 1 May to 30 September, and water-sports users must stay in the designated watersports zones either side of the beach access, rigging outside the bathing beach itself. The distance given for those zones is not consistent - 110 m right and left of the beach access, about 100 m to the right of the parking, and 60 to 240 m out from the swimmer zone - so read the signs on the day. The fenced dune and Treibseldune project in front of the parking area must not be entered, and the beach may be accessed only on the right-hand side of the parking area. A swimmer zone sits directly at the parking, with the water-sports zones to either side. Parking is free from October to April and paid, with a height barrier, from May to September (2023 rule, unconfirmed for 2026). Tube kites are to be launched with the rider in the water rather than off the beach.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Park in the larger area about 200 m from the beach; the old spot parking is no longer tolerated and roadside parking gets tickets and complaints.
  • Walk to the beach on the right side of the parking area; the fenced dune in front of it is a nature project and off limits.
  • From 1 May to 30 September rig outside the bathing beach and ride from one of the two watersport zones, 110 m right or left of the beach access.
  • Booties: the entry is pebbles and larger stones for the first metres.
  • Ask a local about the wind angle before launching in SSW/SW; on this shore anything southerly can be offshore and gusty.
  • On a fair-weather easterly come here rather than the outer-bay spots; the Düseneffekt in the narrowing bay usually gives more wind.
  • Walk your tube kite into the water before you launch it; the beach strip is narrow and shared with swimmers and bystanders.
  • Parking is free from October to April; from May to September it is paid and gated by a height barrier, so a van may not fit.
  • The zone distances quoted for this beach disagree with each other, so treat the signs at the access as the rule.

FAQ

Is it suitable for beginners?

Local sources describe shallow sandbanks suited to progression, but stones, swimmers and gusty southerly wind make the spot better rated as intermediate and up.

What is the wind like?

Best months are April, May, September and October; an easterly Düseneffekt in the narrowing bay can make Lindhöft windier than more exposed outer-coast spots.

Are there rules or restricted zones?

From 1 May to 30 September, watersports must use one of two designated zones 110 m either side of the beach access, and a fenced dune project must not be entered.

What hazards should I know about?

Pebbles and stones near the beach, a marked bathing zone in summer, and limited parking that has caused local conflict.
