Heidkate is a Baltic groyne beach on the south side of the Kieler Bucht, about 30 minutes from Kiel: fine sand, a thin dune belt, a big natural parking area behind the dike by the small light, and a row of stone groynes that decide where you can ride. It is a wave and chop spot, not a lagoon.
The directions to come for are west through northwest and northeast through east, sideshore to side-onshore, with small to moderate waves bending in over the sandbank about 200 m out; you can stand for roughly 20 m off the beach and then it drops away.
When the wind goes too far south it turns gusty and less clean, and the move is to Laboe or Kitzeberg. The rule that matters: the two beach sections between groynes 24-26 in front of the surf school are windsurf-only and kiting there is banned, though the numbering is disputed (groynes 4 and 5 also turns up), so trust the signs on the day.
Bathers have priority and summer collisions are a known problem. This is for intermediate and advanced riders who can handle groynes, stones near shore, bathers and a beach that is busier and more exposed than Fehmarn's shallow spots.

synoptic

fills in: Frontal wind with no daily onset: it arrives with the system, holds for hours or days and can blow through the night. Nothing fills in on a clock here.

Typical strength

Nothing is published from the Heidkate station itself. The closest long-run figures come from Laboe, 7 km down the coast: a 7 kt average with 10 kt gusts across 2010-2026, west-southwest dominant. Read that as the baseline rather than the session wind - the wave and chop days here come with fronts, and they cluster outside high summer.

Synoptic Baltic wind, direction dependent. W and NE/E give the better wave conditions; southerly directions are less clean, and once the wind turns too far south the move is to Laboe or Kitzeberg.
Surfschule Heidkate's station runs from 15 April to 3 October in 2026, with kite courses March to November on request. Nobody has published Heidkate-specific best wind months.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Type

Baltic Sea beach / groyne-protected wave spot

Standing depth

Kite-specific sources converge on a limited near-shore standing zone of roughly 20 m before deeper water, with a shallow sandbar reappearing about 200 m out; a generic review site's claim of no standing area at all is not corroborated by spot-specific guides.

Tides

No significant tides; this is a Baltic Sea beach.

Temperature

18°C summer · 3°C winter

Wetsuit

A wetsuit is normal outside warm summer. Kiel-area water averages about 18-19 C in July/August and 2-3 C in January/February, so spring/autumn and winter require progressively thicker neoprene with boots, gloves and hood.

4–20°C water
Fine sandy beach with a narrow dune belt and stone groynes. West and east wind bend waves onto an offshore sandbank; conditions range from wave to choppy depending on direction. Stones can be present near shore.

Your level

Rescue

+49 152 03161737

Two beach sections are watched by DLRG lifeguards in the main season, and their quarters are in the multi-purpose building on the parking area right of the K33, next to the Deichterrassen restaurant. Nothing is watched outside those sections or outside the season, and there is no kite rescue boat.
The surf school container is the other pair of eyes: station running 15 April to 3 October 2026, open daily 10:00-18:00 in the main season and weekends in the pre-season, kite line +49 152 03161737. Emergencies go through 112.

Launch

Access from the large natural parking area behind the dike near the Heidkate light, reached via B502 and K33. Rigging is on the wide grass strip in front of the beach, which is the easy part; the constraint is where you may then go.Groynes are numbered 2 to 18 running east from the Wendtorfer Schleuse, the surfing section sits between groynes 4 and 6, and kiters must stay out of the windsurf-only sections in front of the surf school. The stone groynes stand close together, so you steer around them to reach open water.

Hazards riders report 20

  • stone groynes
  • bathers in summer
  • kite prohibition in the windsurf-only sections between groynes 24-26
  • potentially gusty southern wind
  • Stone groynes/moles along the shore.
  • Kiting prohibited in the windsurf-only beach sections between groynes 24-26.
  • Bathers have priority and summer collisions are a documented concern.
  • Limited or conflicting standing-depth information; not a dependable beginner shallow-water spot.
  • Stones near shore.
  • Southerly wind is less clean; when it turns too far south, go to Laboe or Kitzeberg.
  • Busy windsurf/kite traffic on windy days.
  • Stone groynes and moles along the shore, set close together, that have to be steered around to reach open water.
  • Kiting prohibited in the windsurf-only beach sections in front of the surf school; the groyne numbering for them is disputed.
  • Bathers have priority and summer collisions are a documented concern; two bathing sections are supervised in the main season.
  • Stones near shore between the groynes.
  • Limited standing depth: roughly 20 m of shallow before the drop, with the bar about 200 m out. Not a dependable beginner shallow-water spot.
  • Southerly wind is gusty and less clean; when it turns too far south, go to Laboe or Kitzeberg.
  • Busy windsurf and kite traffic whenever it blows.
  • Dunes and dune grass are off limits, so use the marked gaps to reach the beach.
  • Part of the water offshore is closed to sailing craft from June to August under the 'surfing only 1.9. to 30.5.' line on the beach plan.
Rules & access
2026: the two beach sections between groynes 24-26 in front of the surf school are reserved for windsurfers and kiting there is prohibited; bathers always have priority, and the dike and its grass must not be damaged. The numbering is disputed - a second reading puts the surf beach and school between groynes 4 and 5 - and the beach plan the municipality publishes, dated July 2022, numbers the groynes 2 to 18 running east from the Wendtorfer Schleuse, marks the surfing section between groynes 4 and 6, two supervised bathing sections further east, two boat sections, the dog beach at the western end and a kite-flying area on the green strip behind the beach. An offshore dashed boundary on that plan is labelled 'surfing only 1.9. to 30.5.', so part of the water is closed to sailing craft through June, July and August. Walking on the dunes or the dune grass is banned year-round for coastal and nature protection; use the marked gaps. Parking behind the dike is charged from 1 April to 31 October - car 1 euro for an hour, 3 euro for three, 6 euro for a day ticket 08:00-20:00, 20 euro for a night ticket 20:00-08:00, with campervans and cars with trailers at 2, 6, 9 and 20 euro - and from 1 November to 31 March a car day ticket is 2 euro. Camping and sleeping in the car on that parking area are not allowed. Read the signs on the beach before rigging.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Read the signs on the beach before rigging; the groyne numbering for the windsurf-only sections is disputed (24-26 or 4-5) and easy to misread.
  • Keep well clear of the two windsurf-only sections in front of the surf school.
  • If the wind backs too far south, drive on to Laboe or Kitzeberg instead of fighting the gusts.
  • Wear booties; there are stones near shore between the groynes.
  • Do not plan lessons or self-rescue practice around a standing zone: it is about 20 m of shallow before deep water, with the bar about 200 m out.
  • Park on the natural parking area behind the dike by the small light, reached via B502 and K33.
  • Groynes are numbered 2 to 18 from the Wendtorfer Schleuse and the surfing section is between 4 and 6, so a '24-26' reading found elsewhere does not match what is on the sand.
  • June to August, the offshore area east of the surfing section falls under the 1.9.-30.5. surfing line; stay in the marked surf section.
  • Parking is paid from April to October, 6 euro a day and more for a van, and sleeping in the car there is not allowed.
