When it fills in

There is no daily onset to wait for; the wind is synoptic and either there or not. What sets the session time is the tide, because the zone is only open from five hours before to five hours after high water, so the window walks about an hour later each day. A summer thermal can add a few knots in the afternoon on warm days.

Norddeich is the Surfschule Norddeich spot on the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea, and it has been running long enough to have its own rules. The riding area is a marked zone of shallow tidal flat: very flat on falling water, chop when a westerly meets the flood.
Beginners learn here and freestylers use the same flat, but nobody rides without the school briefing, because the zone, the tide and a stone mole that disappears at high water all need explaining. The Wadden Sea is National Park and the Nordsee-Befahrensverordnung keeps kites inside designated zones, in a window around high water.
Three things will get you: the submerged mole, the tidal current, and ending up far out on drying mud during the ebb. Spring, early summer and autumn are the seasons. Westerly synoptic wind does most of the work, with a summer thermal now and then.

Typical strength

12-25

Mostly frontal/synoptic North Sea wind. Summer local thermal effects can add more wind than forecast, while high summer can also have longer lulls.
Spring, early summer and autumn are the months for Ostfriesland, spring and autumn the kite high season. Keep an eye on it year-round, though winter restrictions apply at some spots in the region.

The quiver, in words

Regional wind runs from almost nothing to over 40 kt, so bring the whole quiver. No Norddeich-specific size range confirmed.

Direction to shore

The coast/launch faces generally north toward the Wadden Sea, so N is onshore, W and E are sideshore, and S is offshore; this is inferred from the mapped shoreline and spot coordinates.

Dominant direction

W is the annual average direction at the nearest station and the wind you get most. NE gives very flat water behind the mole.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

The water

Type

tidal flat

Standing depth

Very large standing-depth flat-water area, hundreds of metres of it inside the marked spot.

Tides

Tide-dependent Wadden Sea spot. The marked kite zone is usable year-round from 5 hours before to 5 hours after high water. A more conservative rider rule of thumb is about 4 hours either side; tidal range is 2-2.5 m.

Temperature

18°C summer · 4.7°C winter

Wetsuit

Summer Wadden Sea water gets warm enough for a shorty on hot days, but a 4/3 full suit is normal and spring and autumn need at least 5 mm. Winter sessions mean cold-water neoprene, hood, gloves and boots.

Currents

Tidal current on flood and ebb. Follow the ebb too far toward Juist and you walk back through the mud.

5–20°C water
Shallow flat water that turns to chop through the tide. Westerly wind on a rising tide makes it choppy; falling water gives the flat sunset sessions. The stone mole/dam defines the spot and is a hazard once it is covered.

Your level

beginnerintermediateadvanced
Beginners, progressing riders and experienced kiters all ride here; the shallow marked water suits first rides and tricks. Beginners still need the local briefing: the tide, the marked zone and a hidden stone structure.

freeridefreestyleflatwaterlearning
Established school-and-local home spot with tourism traffic in summer; less remote than smaller Ostfriesland spots but with enough grass rigging space when the zone is operating.

Rescue

+49 170 960 94 46

No lifeguard tower and no kite rescue boat on this beach. The school at the launch is what you have: staff assist water starts and landings free of charge, and the surf hotline is +49 170 960 94 46, with the beach base open daily from about 10:00 to 18:00 and the hours moving with the tide.
The local DLRG group in Norden runs a water rescue service with its own boat, and the general emergency number is 112. None of that is a substitute for staying inside the marked zone and leaving before the flats dry.

Launch

Rig and get in through the Surfschule Norddeich beach and watersports area by the dike. Large grass rigging meadow and the school's infrastructure right at the launch.

Hazards riders report 10

  • submerged stone mole at high water
  • tidal current
  • drying mudflat if riding too far out on ebb
  • Submerged stone mole/dam when water is high.
  • Tidal current on flood and ebb.
  • Mudflat dries on the ebb; riding too far out can force a long walk through schlick.
  • Marked kite zone and posted local map must be followed.
  • Protected UNESCO/Nationalpark Wadden Sea surroundings.
  • Several stone groynes, visible only around low water, that will destroy a fin or a foil; the northern one is marked by a west cardinal danger mark and has strong current around it.
  • Land starts and landings are off limits below VDWS Level 5, so plan a water start.
Rules & access
2023/2026: kiting and winging in the Wadden Sea National Park are limited to designated Kite- und Wingsurfgebiete under the Nordsee-Befahrensverordnung, in force since 28 April 2023. Outside the authorised areas, kiting in the park's protection and transition zones is prohibited.
The Norddeich exemption applies year-round inside the buoyed and signposted zone, from five hours before to five hours after high water, and the posted Reviertafeln and safety distances are binding.
Kiting here is allowed only with a valid kite licence and a spot briefing from the school at the launch; riders without VDWS Level 5 must start and land in the water rather than on the beach, which the school helps with at no charge.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Get the spot briefing at Surfschule Norddeich and study the posted zone map before rigging.
  • Ride around high water and leave margin for the ebb; the flats dry fast.
  • Ask where the stone mole sits at today's water level before you go out.
  • Bring the whole quiver; Ostfriesland goes from light wind to over 40 kt.
  • Full suit outside the warmest summer days.
  • Walk the spot at low water once. The groynes are only visible then, and that is the map you will be riding over at high tide.
  • Below VDWS Level 5 you start and land in the water; the school does that with you for free, so ask rather than improvise on the sand.
