When it fills in

No daily onset hour. The wind is synoptic and blows around the clock when the system is in, so the tide sets your window rather than the clock. From June to August local thermal often adds more wind than the forecast promised.

Schillig, in Wangerland on the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea, is the sandy one. Most mainland Wadden Sea launches are mud; here there are dunes, a sandy bottom and a standing-depth zone covering about two thirds of the kite area, and riders can reportedly stand about 1 km offshore even at high water.
The beach faces northeast, so NE is onshore, N and E cross-on, NW and SE side to cross-shore, and S is where it turns cross-off; the kite zone is set up for N, NE, E, SE and S, with NW through E to SSO as the wider working range. Plan on about 3 hours before and after high water.
A corridor out to the Watt edge can stretch a session past that when depth and direction allow, but do not assume it; ask at the school. It gets crowded, partly because it works on the east and south wind days that shut down other Ostfriesland spots and partly because Oldenburg and Bremen are an easy drive.
The rigging meadow is shared with children's kites, and riding outside the marked National Park kite zone brings penalties. Spring and autumn are the season; summer is warmer, but the wind breaks run longer and the beach fills with bathers.

fills in: No daily onset hour. The wind is synoptic and blows around the clock when the system is in, so the tide sets your window rather than the clock. From June to August local thermal often adds more wind than the forecast promised.

Typical strength

12-25

Mostly synoptic North Sea wind with regional summer thermal support possible. The spot is particularly useful when east and south winds do not suit other Ostfriesland launches.
Spring, early summer and autumn are the Ostfriesland windows, with spring and autumn the main kite season. Summer is warmer but busier with beach tourism, and the wind breaks run longer.

Thermal or synoptic

mostly synoptic; summer local thermal can add wind

The quiver, in words

No local size table is published and the standing advice is to leave nothing at home: Ostfriesland runs from almost calm to over 40 kt, with most rideable days between 12 and 25 kt.For a 75-85 kg rider that works out as a 12 m at the 12-16 kt end, a 9 m through the high teens and low twenties, a 7 m once it is over 25, and something near 5-6 m on the days that top 40. Indicative, mapped from the documented wind range rather than from local practice.

Direction to shore

The kite area faces northeast, so NE is onshore, N and E cross-on, NW and SE sideshore to cross-shore, and S offshore to cross-off depending on the exact beach curve.

Dominant direction

N, NE, E, SE and S are the ideal directions for the kite zone; the NE-facing spot works from NW through E to SSO. Schillig is especially useful on east and south wind days.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

The water

Type

tidal flat

Standing depth

A huge standing-depth area covers about two thirds of the kite zone. There is little mud, and even at high water riders can reportedly stand about 1 km offshore.

Tides

Tide-dependent Wadden Sea spot. It works best about 3 hours before and after high water; a corridor to the Watt edge can allow tide-independent riding when water depth and wind direction suit.

Temperature

17.7°C summer · 4.8°C winter

Wetsuit

Summer Wadden Sea water can be warm enough for a shorty on hot days, but a 4/3 full suit is standard and you want at least 5 mm neoprene in spring and autumn. Winter needs full cold-water gear.

Currents

Tidal current is part of the Wadden Sea setting; no Schillig-specific current strength is published.

4–20°C water
Schillig is sandier than many mainland Wadden Sea spots, with dunes and a large flatwater/shallow-water area. It dries earlier than deeper neighbouring spots, but the outer Wattkante option can extend sessions when local rules and water depth allow it.

Your level

beginnerintermediateadvanced
The big sandy standing-depth area and the school on site make Schillig one of the easier Wadden Sea spots to learn at, provided you respect the tide and the zone. The launch traffic and the National Park boundaries mean a beginner should take the school or at least a local briefing.

The scene

What riders come here for

learningflatwaterfreestylefreeridewingfoil
Schools, families and travelling kiters share this beach, so the pressure is higher than at the smaller Ostfriesland launches. It is busy because it works on east and south wind days and because Oldenburg and Bremen are close.

Rescue

Through the bathing season the beach is watched: a stationary water-rescue station at the Badestrand run under the ZWRD-K coastal service, with towers on the campsite beach and on the sand beach, plus a DLRG Wangerland crew covering Horumersiel and Schillig from the shallow-draft rescue boat Willi Roosenboom at bathing times.
The season runs from mid or late May to early or mid September, one boat crew on weekdays and two at weekends, weekends only outside the peak. Watch hours are 08:00 to 20:00, and bathing supervision follows the tide, from 2 hours before to 2 hours after high water.
None of this is a kite service, and in April or October there is nobody on the sand. Off-season and out-of-hours the call is 112, which goes to the Leitstelle Friesland/Wilhelmshaven and can put out the DLRG inflatable, the sea-rescue boat stationed at Horumersiel and air rescue; that is what came for a kitesurfer left in the water off Schillig when the wind quit in October 2025. The school on the beach also runs accompanied sessions for riders who would rather not go out alone.

Launch

Rig on the large kite/drachen meadow, then carry through the small dunes to the sandy beach. Inexperienced kiters should carry the kite in hand and launch only at the beach rather than on the busy meadow.

Hazards riders report 9

  • crowded meadow with kites and other flying gear
  • National Park boundaries
  • spot dries earlier than deeper neighboring areas
  • Busy kite/drachen meadow shared with children's kites and other flying gear.
  • National Park boundaries and sensitive protected zones; riding outside the kite zone can lead to penalties and threatens access.
  • The spot dries earlier than deeper neighbouring Wadden Sea areas.
  • Tidal current and rapidly changing water depth.
  • Possible conflicts with bathers and beach tourism in summer.
  • Offshore or cross-off wind risk on southerly sectors depending on the exact beach curve.
Rules & access
2023/2026: Kiting and winging in the Wadden Sea National Park are limited to designated Kite- und Wingsurfgebiete under the Nordsee-Befahrensverordnung, in force since 28 April 2023. The approved Wangerland kite areas are shown on local map extracts and on-site signs; private kiters are welcome, private instruction is prohibited, and riders unsure of the boundary should ask the local school team.
At Schillig the working window is about 3 hours before and after high water, in practice +/- 3 hours around high water, with a corridor to the Watt edge for tide-independent riding in suitable conditions.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Read the kite-zone signs at the beach and ask at the school if the boundary or the tide corridor is unclear.
  • Carry the kite in hand through the dunes and launch on the sand when the meadow is full of family kites.
  • Plan sessions on the window 3 hours either side of high water; only push out to the Wattkante if someone local confirms there is water.
  • Do not cross into the National Park zones outside the kite area; the penalties are real and so is the access risk.
  • On a sunny summer east-wind day, arrive early: meadow and beach both fill up.
