Good to know before you go4
- Universal Charleston-area rules: kiting must launch/ride at least 100 yards from swimmers and at least a mile from any pier — violating this is the fastest way to get a spot shut down for everyone.
- Sullivan's Island parking is seasonal — Stations 28-30 work year-round, but Stations 12 and 19 are open to kiters only September-April.
- Folly Beach's South End has unmarked jetties and groins that submerge at high tide — a real collision hazard, not just a wind consideration.
- Isle of Palms North End (Wild Dunes) requires parking outside the private resort and a quarter-mile-plus walk in.
The spots
Folly Beach South End
The kiteable part of Folly Island is the southwest end, down by Folly Beach County Park, where the beach is widest and the sand packs hard enough to ride a landboard on it.
intermediateadvancedIn seasonno month named for this spot
The model here carries the month's average wind rather than a count of windy days: it reaches 13.3 kt in March, the strongest month it models for this spot.
Folly Beach South End: the long version, the launch and the rules
More on Folly Beach South End
It takes almost any wind direction, which is why it gets used at all: elsewhere on the island you run into the pier, the swim zones, or the surfers at The Washout. The official County Park kite boundary starts 200 yards south of the park facility building and runs to the inlet, so pace that off before you rig. On southerly wind you drift toward rock groins, and some of them go unmarked at high tide, so settle the upwind question before you commit. West wind here is side-off, and it is the direction to be honest with yourself about. From Memorial Day to Labor Day kiters must stay at least 100 yards from the water's edge once through the launch zone (2026), and the County Park lot reaches capacity on summer weekends and holidays. Summer water runs 28.1 C and winter 15.6 C, so boardshorts in July and a full suit in January. Nobody has published a monthly wind figure for this end of the island.
Getting on the water
The wide, thinly used southwest end by Folly Beach County Park is the safest launch on the island.
If it goes wrong
Lifeguards cover the West End county park beach and the 2nd Street East to 3rd Street West frontage from May through Labor Day, and they are there for swimmers. No kite rescue, no boat, no patrol at the inlet end. Rip currents are common along this beach. For anything serious the number is 911.
Room to rig
Wide beach at the County Park south and west end, hard-packed sand. The official kiteable boundary runs from 200 yards south of the County Park facility building to the inlet. Stay off the populated park sections and out of the swim zones.
Rules and access
2026: Folly Beach has no kiteboarding-specific municipal rule. City beach regulations ban alcohol, glass, plastic, balloons, styrofoam, smoking, open fires and fireworks on the sand. A surfboard leash is required, surfing is barred from the swimming zone between 2nd Street East and 3rd Street West from 15 May to 15 September between 10:00 and 18:00, and barred within 200 feet of the fishing pier year-round. Dogs are off the beach 10:00-18:00 from 1 May to 30 September. No lights may illuminate the front beach between 22:00 and dawn from 1 May to 31 October, for the turtles. Lifeguards work the West End county park and the 2nd East to 3rd West frontage from May through Labor Day. The riding boundary in local use runs from 200 yards south of the county park facility building to the inlet, with a 100-yard standoff from the water's edge once through the launch zone between Memorial Day and Labor Day; that standoff is not written into the city's published beach rules. Parking at Folly Beach County Park is paid and the lot reaches capacity on summer weekends and holidays.
Sullivan's Island Station 28.5

Sullivan's Island Station 28.5: the long version, the launch and the rules
More on Sullivan's Island Station 28.5
Stations 28-30 are the year-round launch zone on the island, and 28.5 is where most kiters actually set up. The tide runs the session here: shallow low-tide slicks, sandbar water, ocean chop and hard current can all turn up between one high and the next. Spring is the best Charleston season; summer goes lighter and thermal, with the beach full. A beginner can learn here, but only with an instructor or a local minding them, because the rules push you 100 yards offshore and away from swimmers while the Breach Inlet current is busy trying to take you somewhere else. Do not confuse it with Folly's Washout surf zone or with 3rd Avenue on Isle of Palms across the inlet.
Getting on the water
The designated Sullivan's Island launch and landing zone is Stations 28-30, and Station 28.5 is the main year-round kite launch.
If it goes wrong
No lifeguard cover for kiters and no boat or jet-ski rescue. The island school's instructors are PASA and first-aid certified and teach off this beach, but that cover is for their own students. What stands in for a rescue service is the local habit: group launching and landing, and riders calling each other out when something looks unsafe. Stay out of Breach Inlet. The current there is why anyone would need searching for in the first place.
Room to rig
Public beach access with room enough outside the peak, but it gets extremely crowded in summer, and beach patrol may prohibit launching between Memorial Day and Labor Day when the beach is full of people.
Rules and access
2026: Stations 28-30 are the year-round Sullivan's Island launch, Stations 12 and 19 are off-season only from September through April, all kiting must be 100 yards offshore, riders must stay at least three kite lengths from swimmers, and the Station 28.5 tide pool is not for riding. From Memorial Day to Labor Day, beach patrol can prohibit launching when the beach is heavily crowded.
Isle of Palms South End
Isle of Palms South End, known locally as 3rd IOP or Waffle House, is the Breach Inlet end of the island.

Isle of Palms South End: the long version, the launch and the rules
More on Isle of Palms South End
The riding boundary runs from the southwest tip at Breach Inlet up to 6th Avenue, and you park near 3rd Street. Spring southerlies are the best wind of the year: SW comes in sideshore and steady, 15-25 kt in spring and again in the fall and winter frontal periods, while NE fronts hit the same numbers gusty. Summer thermals are 10-15 kt with the beach full, so bring a big kite and a foil or a surfboard, or ride elsewhere. Low-tide sandbars flatten sections of the water while the Atlantic breaks outside. Breach Inlet is the reason to pay attention, because the current there is very strong and can sweep a rider toward the bridge to Sullivan's Island. Beginners do learn on this beach, but they should keep well up from the inlet and get local support before going near it. From Memorial Day through Labor Day you clear the launch zone and stay 100 yards off the water's edge, keep 100 feet from anyone in the ocean, and leave the pier, the Sea Cabins pier and Charleston County Park alone.
Getting on the water
The local kite boundary runs from the southwest tip at Breach Inlet to 6th Avenue. Park near 3rd Street or 3rd Avenue for Waffle House, also called 3rd IOP.
If it goes wrong
No kite rescue service and no kite-aware patrol. What exists instead is a buddy system: riders here launch and land in groups, watch each other and police their own safety, because the community treats access to this water as something it can lose. Know the tide, the current and the wind direction before you go anywhere near Breach Inlet, where the flow can carry you down to the Sullivan's Island bridge. Emergencies go to 911.
Room to rig
Wide public beach near the inlet. Keep away from swimmers, and do not push past 6th Avenue on a normal session because of the beach users up there.
Rules and access
2026: kiteboarding is permitted on Isle of Palms in the less crowded areas. The South End / Waffle House boundary runs from the southwest tip at Breach Inlet to 6th Avenue, parking is near 3rd Street, and from Memorial Day through Labor Day riders stay at least 100 yards from the water's edge once past the launch zone. A 100-foot separation from any person in the ocean applies at all times, beachgoers have right of way, and you keep away from swimmers, surfers and fishermen. Do not launch at Charleston County Park or anywhere near the Sea Cabins pier, and give the pier itself a wide berth on both sides, a mile being the figure riders here use. Riding downwind past the pier is accepted as long as the distance rules hold.

What riders say
4 recurring claims
Folly is rideable and roomy at the county park, but riders keep warning beginners away from random inlet or mid-island launches because rocks, jetties, swimmers, and surfers change the risk fast.
consensus×5 riders
Most visiting riders are steered toward Sullivan's 28.5 first, because that is where they expect other kiters, launches, and local help to be.
consensus×4 riders
Charleston wind is not a book-any-week guarantee: April and May get the warm southerlies, summer is often light, and late August into fall can go quiet for weeks.
consensus×4 riders
IOP/3rd is often described as a little flatter and better for self-sufficient riders, but it is less social than Sullivan's and more tide- and wind-choice dependent.

History & trivia
- Isle of Palms takes its name from a 1899 rebranding by developer J.S. Lawrence, away from its earlier name 'Hunting Island' or 'Long Island'; the Confederate submarine H.L. Hunley departed nearby Breach Inlet during the Civil War.
- Folly Beach voters rejected South Carolina's 2006 same-sex marriage ban by 51.2%, a notable local outlier against a state that passed it with 78% support.
- Folly Beach County Park closed after Hurricane Irene's 2011 erosion and reopened in July 2013 after a terminal groin and 175,000 cubic yards of replacement sand.
