Station 28.5, called The Bath locally, is the Charleston launch at the Breach Inlet end of Sullivan's Island. Stations 28-30 are the year-round launch zone on the island, and 28.5 is where most kiters actually set up.
The tide runs the session here: shallow low-tide slicks, sandbar water, ocean chop and hard current can all turn up between one high and the next. Spring is the best Charleston season; summer goes lighter and thermal, with the beach full.
A beginner can learn here, but only with an instructor or a local minding them, because the rules push you 100 yards offshore and away from swimmers while the Breach Inlet current is busy trying to take you somewhere else. Do not confuse it with Folly's Washout surf zone or with 3rd Avenue on Isle of Palms across the inlet.

Typical strength

15-25 kt in the spring and September good-season windows; lighter 10-20 kt summer conditions with afternoon thermals trending light.

Seasonal and tide-dependent. Spring is the best Charleston season, summer is warmer but lighter with afternoon thermals, and winter depends entirely on the forecast. Charleston SW wind arrives in short thermal or frontal spurts and shuts off quickly.
Spring March-May is the main recommended travel window; September can be good but with fewer windy days. Summer has beach crowds, lighter thermal wind and very warm shallow slicks; fall and winter can bring frontal wind but are more variable.

Direction to shore

The shoreline at this end of the island runs north-east to south-west and looks out to the south-east, so SE and SSE come in straight onshore. The whole working sector from E round through S to WSW is onshore to side-onshore, which is what makes the Charleston beaches forgiving compared with the inlet spots.NE and ENE run close to cross-shore off the Breach Inlet end. Anything from N through NW is offshore: a frontal northerly behind a cold front pushes riders away from the beach and is not a direction to be out in. Shore angles here are read off the coastline rather than from a local measurement.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Standing depth

Shallow low-tide slicks form at Station 28.5. How far the standing depth extends is unconfirmed.

Tides

Strongly tide affected. Tidal current changes how much power you have on the kite. South wind works best on an outgoing tide, and Station 28.5 is the best NE option on an incoming tide.

Temperature

28°C summer · 16°C winter

Wetsuit

Boardshorts or a rashguard through summer, a full suit in winter and early spring. This is derived from Sullivan's Island seasonal water temperatures and a wetsuit temperature chart, not from riders on the beach.

Currents

Strong tidal current, especially around Breach Inlet and the sandbar zone.

12–31°C water
Atlantic beach and sandbar setup at the Breach Inlet end of Sullivan's Island. Water is semi-flat to choppy depending on tides, with shallow low-tide slicks in summer and an outside sandbar option; do not enter Breach Inlet.

Your level

beginnerintermediateadvanced
Rated beginner through expert, and a school teaches its lessons at Station 28.5. Beginners still need instruction or local support: the tidal current, the swimmers, the 100-yard offshore rule and the restricted launch corridors are all working against a first solo session.

Rescue

No lifeguard cover for kiters and no boat or jet-ski rescue. The island school's instructors are PASA and first-aid certified and teach off this beach, but that cover is for their own students. What stands in for a rescue service is the local habit: group launching and landing, and riders calling each other out when something looks unsafe.
Stay out of Breach Inlet. The current there is why anyone would need searching for in the first place.

Launch

The designated Sullivan's Island launch and landing zone is Stations 28-30, and Station 28.5 is the main year-round kite launch.

  • summer swimmers
  • tide pool restriction
  • strong tidal current
  • sandbars
  • Breach Inlet current and sandbar spits
  • Strong tidal current affecting kite power
  • Summer swimmers and sunbathers
  • Beach patrol may prohibit launching during crowded Memorial Day-Labor Day periods
  • Station 28.5 tide pool is not for riding
  • Must stay 100 yards offshore and at least three kite lengths from swimmers
  • Variable thermal/frontal wind that can pulse and shut off
  • Chop and rougher conditions on some elevated onshore or westerly flows
  • Offshore N to NW flow behind a cold front, which pushes riders out to sea
  • Shallow low-tide slicks that heat past 90 F in summer
Rules & access
2026: Stations 28-30 are the year-round Sullivan's Island launch, Stations 12 and 19 are off-season only from September through April, all kiting must be 100 yards offshore, riders must stay at least three kite lengths from swimmers, and the Station 28.5 tide pool is not for riding. From Memorial Day to Labor Day, beach patrol can prohibit launching when the beach is heavily crowded.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Keep off the Station 28.5 tide pool. Riding it is restricted.
  • South wind wants an outgoing tide; on NE, Station 28.5 is the pick on an incoming tide.
  • Stay outside Breach Inlet unless a local who knows it is running the session.
  • Expect beach patrol to stop launching on a packed summer day between Memorial Day and Labor Day.
  • Pack a big kite for the summer thermals, plus a foil or a surfboard.
  • Check live wind before you commit: Charleston SW arrives in short spurts and shuts off fast.
  • Sit out the northerly on the back of a front. It is offshore here and it blows you away from the island.
  • Launch and land in a group. That is the whole of the rescue arrangement on this beach.

FAQ

Is Station 28.5 suitable for beginners?

Yes, with instruction. Local schools rate it beginner through expert, but tidal current and offshore-distance rules mean independent beginners still need support.

What is the wind like?

Spring, from March through May, is the best season with 15-25 knot days; summer brings lighter 10-20 knot afternoon thermals and more beach crowds.

Are there rules or restricted zones?

As of 2026, Stations 28-30 form the year-round Sullivan's Island launch zone, all kiting must stay 100 yards offshore and three kite lengths from swimmers, and the Station 28.5 tide pool itself is off-limits for riding.

What hazards should riders know about?

Strong tidal current around Breach Inlet is the main hazard, and beach patrol can prohibit launching during crowded periods between Memorial Day and Labor Day.
