When it fills in

Summer riding is an afternoon thermal that builds through mid-to-late afternoon and often ends when a thunderstorm fires off the sea-breeze front inland. On days when the prevailing south-westerly is already at 8-10 mph the sea breeze does not form at all. Frontal wind in spring, autumn and winter arrives at any hour.

Isle of Palms South End, known locally as 3rd IOP or Waffle House, is the Breach Inlet end of the island. The riding boundary runs from the southwest tip at Breach Inlet up to 6th Avenue, and you park near 3rd Street.
Spring southerlies are the best wind of the year: SW comes in sideshore and steady, 15-25 kt in spring and again in the fall and winter frontal periods, while NE fronts hit the same numbers gusty. Summer thermals are 10-15 kt with the beach full, so bring a big kite and a foil or a surfboard, or ride elsewhere.
Low-tide sandbars flatten sections of the water while the Atlantic breaks outside. Breach Inlet is the reason to pay attention, because the current there is very strong and can sweep a rider toward the bridge to Sullivan's Island.
Beginners do learn on this beach, but they should keep well up from the inlet and get local support before going near it. From Memorial Day through Labor Day you clear the launch zone and stay 100 yards off the water's edge, keep 100 feet from anyone in the ocean, and leave the pier, the Sea Cabins pier and Charleston County Park alone.

On days when the prevailing south-westerly is already at 8-10 mph the sea breeze does not form at all. Frontal wind in spring, autumn and winter arrives at any hour.

Typical strength

15-25 kt in spring and fall/winter frontal periods; summer afternoon thermals are commonly 10-15 kt.

SW is the steadier sideshore direction and NE fronts are often gusty. Summer thermals are light, and spring is the season to come to Charleston.
Spring holds the steadiest warm southerly, 15-25 kt, and is the season to come. Summer is lighter and crowded: afternoon thermals of 10-15 kt, and none at all on days when the gradient south-westerly is already up. Fall and winter deliver 15-25 kt on a NE front, often gusty.
For scale, the annual mean at the nearest long-record coastal station is around 10 kt, which is indicative for the region only; nothing is measured at this beach.

The quiver, in words

No local size numbers are published. Indicative for a 75-85 kg rider, read off the wind bands riders describe: 9-12 m for the 15-25 kt spring southerly and the autumn and winter fronts, 7-9 m at the top of a strong front, and 14-17 m or a foil for the 10-15 kt summer thermal, where a surfboard also earns its keep.

Direction to shore

The beach here faces south-east. SW and NE both arrive side-shore, SW the steadier and NE the gusty one. S and SSE come in onshore, SSW side to onshore.N and NW blow straight off the land, and the northerly behind a storm front is the direction local riders sit out rather than ride.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Type

Standing depth

Low-tide sandbars make flatter, shallower water around Charleston and IOP. Nobody has published a standing-depth figure for 3rd Avenue.

Tides

Tide and inlet driven. Riders pick between Station 28.5 and 3rd Avenue by tide and wind, and you want the tide in your head before you go near Breach Inlet.

Temperature

28°C summer · 16°C winter

Wetsuit

Boardshorts or a rashguard in summer, a full suit in winter and early spring. That is inferred from Sullivan's Island seasonal water temperatures and a general wetsuit temperature chart, not measured at 3rd Avenue.

Currents

The current by Breach Inlet is very strong and can sweep a rider toward the bridge to Sullivan's Island.

12–31°C water
Atlantic beach and inlet water at the southwest end of Isle of Palms. Low-tide sandbars flatten sections while the Atlantic breaks outside, and the IOP side picks up waves on the incoming tide.

Your level

beginnerintermediateadvanced
South End, Waffle House and 3rd IOP are the same beach, and it carries a beginner, an advanced and an expert rating at once. Beginner-friendly on the sand, expert water at the inlet. Beginners should keep off the Breach Inlet current and take instruction or ride with locals, especially in the summer crowd.

Rescue

No kite rescue service and no kite-aware patrol. What exists instead is a buddy system: riders here launch and land in groups, watch each other and police their own safety, because the community treats access to this water as something it can lose.
Know the tide, the current and the wind direction before you go anywhere near Breach Inlet, where the flow can carry you down to the Sullivan's Island bridge. Emergencies go to 911.

Launch

The local kite boundary runs from the southwest tip at Breach Inlet to 6th Avenue. Park near 3rd Street or 3rd Avenue for Waffle House, also called 3rd IOP.

Rules & access
2026: kiteboarding is permitted on Isle of Palms in the less crowded areas. The South End / Waffle House boundary runs from the southwest tip at Breach Inlet to 6th Avenue, parking is near 3rd Street, and from Memorial Day through Labor Day riders stay at least 100 yards from the water's edge once past the launch zone. A 100-foot separation from any person in the ocean applies at all times, beachgoers have right of way, and you keep away from swimmers, surfers and fishermen. Do not launch at Charleston County Park or anywhere near the Sea Cabins pier, and give the pier itself a wide berth on both sides, a mile being the figure riders here use. Riding downwind past the pier is accepted as long as the distance rules hold.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Park at the 3rd Street/3rd Avenue right-of-way near Breach Inlet: free year-round in 2026 if all four wheels are off the road and you block no access, driveway or mailbox.
  • Stay between Breach Inlet and 6th Avenue unless the downwinder is planned with someone who knows the water.
  • Treat Breach Inlet as advanced water even on a day the beach launch feels easy.
  • Pick SW for the steadier sideshore session; NE fronts blow harder in the gusts.
  • From Memorial Day through Labor Day, clear the launch zone, then stay 100 yards offshore and 100 feet from anyone in the water.
  • Do not launch by the pier, the Sea Cabins pier or Charleston County Park.
  • Skip the northerlies behind a front. They blow off the land here and there is nothing downwind of you.
  • Do not launch by the pier, the Sea Cabins pier or Charleston County Park, and give the pier a mile on either side.
  • Launch and land with someone else on the beach. That buddy habit is how this spot keeps its access.
  • A summer forecast showing an existing 8-10 mph south-westerly often means no sea breeze at all that afternoon.

Is the South End suitable for beginners?

Local guides list it for beginners through experts, but they warn riders to know tides, currents and wind direction before going near Breach Inlet.

It's a mix of sea breeze and frontal wind: SW is described as the steadier sideshore direction, while NE frontal wind is often gustier, and summer thermals run around 10-15 knots.

Are there rules for riders?

As of 2026, riders must stay at least 100 yards from the water's edge and 100 feet from any person in the ocean from Memorial Day through Labor Day, and may not launch near Charleston County Park or Sea Cabins pier.

The main hazard is the very strong Breach Inlet current, which can sweep riders toward the Sullivan's Island bridge; summer brings heavy beach crowds too.
