Altafulla is a narrow town beach on the Costa Daurada east of Tarragona, with houses right behind the sand and no kite zone, no kite school and no kite rescue. The water is open Mediterranean: accounts split between chop with small waves and flat, which probably means it swings with sea state and wind angle.
Nobody has published a dominant direction or a normal rideable strength here, so the forecast is your only planning tool and the beach itself is the deciding factor. In high season there is only room for windsurfing, and kites come out when the sunbathers leave.
That makes it an off-season or late-evening call for intermediates upward, not a beginner beach and not a trip destination. The compensation is the sand itself: fine, gentle entry, warm calm water for the days you do not ride.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Standing depth

Entry into the water is gentle, but no kite-specific standing-depth area is confirmed.

Tides

Tide-independent for kitesurfing; local tide tables for Altafulla/Tarragona show a very small Mediterranean range.

Temperature

24.6°C summer · 14.2°C winter

Wetsuit

No Altafulla-specific wetsuit guidance exists. Nearby Coma-ruga runs shorts in summer, a shorty or a normal suit in spring and autumn, and a full wetsuit in winter, which the sea-temperature record supports.

14–28°C water
Open sandy Mediterranean town beach. Accounts vary between chop with small waves and flat water, so conditions probably move with sea state and wind direction. The bathing water is calm and warm over fine sand, clear most days; the same sand bottom makes a beach break that only works sometimes.

Your level

not for beginners hereintermediateadvanced
Rated intermediate and expert. Intermediates can use it and experts may enjoy it, but the narrow town-beach setting and the high-season beach users keep it off any beginner list.

Hazards riders report 4

  • Narrow beach and houses close behind the sand.
  • Sunbathers and family beach users in high season.
  • Chop and small waves in kite spot listings.
  • No kite zone, no kite school supervision and no dedicated kite rescue.
Rules & access
2026: a new Altafulla beach-use ordinance was ready for debate in July 2026. It would ban smoking on the beach, penalise reserving sand space with unattended towels or parasols, and restrict dogs during the bathing season from 14 May to 14 September. No official kite-specific rule or kite channel for Altafulla is known. In high season there is only room for windsurfing, and kites go up once the sunbathers leave.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Look at the beach before you unroll anything; kites go up after the sunbathers pack up.
  • Do not assume a kite channel exists here. Ask locally before riding in bathing season.
  • Use the Tarragona and Altafulla forecasts to pick the day, then let sea state and beach-user density pick the hour.
  • Leave extra margin on the launch: it is narrow and the houses start where the sand ends.
