Levante

11:00 · 12:00 · 14:00 · 17:00 · 20:00

In summer it is a clean afternoon thermal: dead overnight and through the morning, building from about 11:00-12:00, best between 14:00 and 17:00, and gone by 20:00. Levante and the winter events are synoptic and can blow at any hour, which is why the windiest months on this beach are the cold ones.

The marks are the clock times the record names, laid on a 24-hour day. The bar between the first and the last covers those hours; it is not a promise of wind.

La Pineda is the sandy town beach south of Tarragona, on the Costa Daurada, and it rides as a Levante break. Levante arrives cross-on, so when it blows hard the inside turns to whitewater and the sea keeps breaking on you; with a smaller swell the same setup is friendly. Behind the protective breakwater there is more control.
Tides do not run the spot. The mole is the hazard to plan around, so give it a wide margin in any Levante.
Kite is open from 1 October to 31 May and restricted in summer (2026), which does not square with the April to October season quoted for the wider Tarragona kite area, and the Vila-seca municipal text could not be read, so check the signs before you rig. Nobody has published typical knots for this launch.

Typical strength

Sessions sit in the 12-18 kt band. Modelled from ten years of hourly wind at the beach rather than a local anemometer: about 12% of afternoon hours (14:00-20:00) reach 12 kt across the year, best from November to April at 14-19%, thinnest from June to September at 6-8%. Hours over 18 kt are a winter thing, 3-5% in December to March and near zero in summer.

Kiteable conditions are on record, but no wind statistics exist for this exact launch. April through October is the season given for the wider Tarragona kite area, not for this beach on its own.
Strong Levante turns the sea into a wave and whitewater break; with a smaller swell it stays kiteable. Summer is warm and it is also full tourist season.

The quiver, in words

For a 75-85 kg rider: 12 m on the summer afternoon breeze, 10-12 m on a normal Levante day, 9 m once the Levante is up and the inside is breaking. Indicative sizing read off the wind band; no local kit list is published for this beach.

Direction to shore

The beach runs southwest to northeast and opens to the southeast. Levante out of the east arrives cross-on, which is what builds the whitewater. The summer afternoon breeze comes in from the south-southwest and is side-onshore from the other side.West-northwest and northwest, which produce the strongest hours of the year on this coast, blow offshore off the land here and are not a launch direction.

Dominant direction

Levante from the east is the only named wind on record for this launch; wider SW and Garbi use is unconfirmed for the beach itself.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Wetsuit

Open Costa Daurada sand with chop and small waves. It is a Levante wave setup, and cross-on wind builds heavy whitewater when the swell is up; behind the protective breakwater you get more control.

The rating covers beginner, intermediate and expert. Strong Levante surf and a summer beach full of bathers are not beginner conditions, so beginner=true is kept with that caution attached.

Rules & access
2026: La Pineda is open for kite from 1 October to 31 May and restricted in summer. The Vila-seca municipal text behind that could not be read, so treat the detail as unconfirmed and check the beach signage before rigging.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Read the beach signage in Vila-seca before you rig: kite is open 1 October to 31 May and restricted through the bathing season (2026).
  • Give the mole and the breakwater a wide margin, and stay in when Levante has the whitewater going unless you are solid in cross-on surf.
  • Do not use the Castelldefels kite rules for this beach; that La Pineda is a different beach, near Barcelona.
  • Drive south from Tarragona and use the beach parking; the launch is a short walk from the car.
  • In summer the wind is an afternoon-only thermal: nothing before 11:00, best 14:00 to 17:00, over by 20:00.
  • The strongest wind on this coast comes from the west-northwest and blows straight off the land here, so a big forecast in that sector is not a session.
