When it fills in

Unconfirmed locally. The winds that give this spot its season are frontal Levante and Poniente, and those can blow at any hour and hold overnight. The SW Garbi is a thermal that builds through the middle of the day and backs toward the southeast as the afternoon goes on, but the Garbi season and the kiting season barely overlap.

Segur de Calafell is a marina spot, and everything here is oriented on the Segur breakwater. Levante is the wave wind: launch west of the marina, take the wind cross-shore from the left, and the waves peel along the breakwater for down-the-line riding. Poniente and southeast make waves less often, and then the launch is east of the marina.
SW Garbi is the regular wind and it is a cruising wind, usually wanting bigger kit. Riding is off-season only, 1 October to 31 May. The rest of the year this is a serviced family resort beach, 1.7 km of fine sand with lifeguard cover, beach services and marina traffic.
It is rated intermediate, and the breakwater is the reason. No dedicated kite rescue and no official 2026 kite-channel map is on record, so give the port entrance room and treat the beach posts as general cover.

Typical strength

Regional figure, no local session measurement. The summer thermal along this stretch of Costa Daurada regularly reaches about 20 kt, and the SW Garbi that blows here most often is that wind, which is why it is described as wanting bigger kit. Levante and Poniente days are frontal rather than thermal and can run harder, and they are the ones that make the waves along the breakwater. A shore mast on the beach itself averages only about 3 kt across the year, which says more about the mast than about a session.

Forecast-dependent wave and freeride riding. Levante, and now and then Poniente or SE, makes the waves; the regular Garbi is a cruising wind that wants bigger equipment.
Open 1 October to 31 May, with kiting authorized outside the bathing season and banned in summer.

Thermal or synoptic

both

Also on record

Station observations at Segur de Calafell give an annual average WSW at 3 kt with gusts of 5 kt for 2012-2016. That is a station average, not a kite-session average.

The quiver, in words

Garbi cruising usually needs bigger equipment; no exact kite-size range is confirmed.

Direction to shore

Levante is cross-shore from the left; Garbi SW is used for cruising; exact shore angle for every launch is unconfirmed.

Dominant direction

SW Garbi; E Levante; W Poniente; SE can also bring waves

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Standing depth

The entry is gentle and calm enough for a family beach, but no kite-specific standing-depth zone is on record.

Tides

Kiting is tide-independent at nearby Calafell, and the Tarragona and Altafulla tables show only a very small Mediterranean range.

Temperature

24.5°C summer · 14.1°C winter

Wetsuit

No wetsuit or shorty in peak summer; full winter wetsuit in winter. Winter average water temperature is around 14.1 C, with the coldest period around 13-14 C.

14–28°C water
Sandy Mediterranean beach beside the Segur marina: 1.7 km of fine golden sand, warm calm clear water and beach services. In Levante the waves peel along the marina breakwater; Poniente and southeast wind bring waves less often.

Your level

not for beginners hereintermediateadvanced
The posted level is intermediate. The marina breakwater, the wave setup and the seasonal closure keep it off the beginner list, though the wider Calafell beach listings read gentler.

Rescue

Segur beach carries a surveillance and rescue post, and the Calafell beaches have lookout towers plus solar-powered SOS points with defibrillators. The service runs daily 11:00-16:00 from 1 April to 15 June and 11:00-20:00 in July and August, inside a bathing season that closes on 15 October.
Kiting here is a 1 October to 31 May activity, so for most of that window there is nobody on the sand. No kite-specific rescue exists.

Launch

The launch follows the wind: west of the marina in cross-shore Levante, east of the marina when Poniente or a southeast swell is working.

Rules & access
2026: the posted kiting season runs 01/10 to 31/05, authorized outside the bathing season, with kiting banned in summertime. The bathing season itself is 1 April to 15 October, so the two overlap for a fortnight in October and the beach rules still apply then. Calafell's beach ordinance, approved definitively in 2014 and still linked from municipal beach information in 2026, gives bathing priority, places sports areas inside the beach-use plan, requires marked access channels for craft where they exist, and prohibits bathing inside marked launch and haul-out channels. Craft must cross the 200 m band off the beach perpendicular to the shore at under 3 knots and use the marked channels where they exist. No permit requirement specific to kiting was found.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Use the marina as your reference: west side for Levante waves, east side for Poniente or southeast days.
  • Do not plan a summer session; kiting is authorized outside the bathing season, 1 October to 31 May, and only fresh local confirmation would change that.
  • Bring bigger kit for a Garbi day than you would rig for Levante.
  • Give the breakwater and the port entrance a wide margin, especially when the waves wrap along the marina.
  • Winter water sits around 14.1 C, so pack a proper full suit for the off-season months that are the whole season here.
