On the clock

10:00 · 11:00 · 14:00 · 17:00

In summer the usable wind is the sea breeze, and it keeps a clock. Near calm at dawn, still under 4 knots at 10:00, filling from about 11:00, at its strongest between 14:00 and 17:00, then fading through the evening and gone by night. Measured at the nearest airport and indicative for the beach. The easterly that actually works here is synoptic and keeps no clock at all.

The marks are the clock times the record names, laid on a 24-hour day. The bar between the first and the last covers those hours; it is not a promise of wind.

Coma-ruga is an urban beach on the El Vendrell shoreline, between Tarragona and Calafell: fine sand, a promenade running its whole length, families all summer. The one access detail that matters is that you enter and leave the water only through the boat zone marked with yellow buoys, so find those before you unroll anything.
E is the best direction; WSW and ENE come in side-shore. The wind is the weak part of the record, and honestly so: the nearest station averaged SE at 5 kt with 9 kt gusts across 2014-2017, which tells you this is a spot you pick off a forecast rather than a place you book a week at.
The water is small waves, sometimes broadened to small or medium. The 2023 El Vendrell beach ordinance, whose latest gazette update is dated 05/12/2024, carries no kite-specific line, so ask locally what applies this season. Intermediate and up, and not because the water is hard: it is the channel rule and the number of people on the sand.

Typical strength

Weak, and honestly so. The nearest station averages 4-5 knots month to month with gusts of 8-10, and reaches force 4 or more on about one and a half percent of its readings. The airport inland shows the same shape: a summer afternoon peak near 8 knots, with 15 knots or more in roughly 2 percent of afternoon hours. Neither sits on the beach, but both point the same way. This is a spot you catch on a particular forecast, not a place with a wind.

Light station averages mean you pick this spot off a forecast rather than counting on it. E is still the direction that works.
No Coma-ruga kite season has been published. June to August is flagged only for beach users; nothing else is established.

Also on record

The nearest station, at Els Masos de Coma-Ruga, averaged SE at 5 kt with 9 kt gusts across 2014-2017. That is a weather-station average, not a kite-session average.

The quiver, in words

No local list exists. On a sea-breeze afternoon a 75-85 kg rider is on the biggest thing in the bag, a 15-17 m or a foil, and often still short of power. The east days worth driving for sit nearer 15-20 knots, which is a 10-12 m, and only a hard winter blow gets you onto 9 m.Indicative, worked from the station figures rather than from a quiver counted on this beach.

Direction to shore

side-shore for WSW and ENE; E is listed as the best direction

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

The water

Type

sea

Standing depth

Fine sand shelving gently, so you walk out a fair way before it is past chest height. No measured distance has been published, and the tide range here is too small to move that line.

Tides

Tide independent for kiting; the Tarragona-area range is small anyway.

Temperature

26°C summer · 13°C winter

Wetsuit

Shorts in summer, shorty or normal suit in spring and fall, and a full wetsuit in winter.

14–28°C water
Sandy Mediterranean beach with small waves, sometimes broadened to small or medium. Fine soft sand, little variation in width, and a continuous pedestrian promenade behind it. The Riuet spring at L'Estany reaches the beach at around 18-21 C year-round, which is the spring itself and not the sea temperature where you ride.

Your level

not for beginners hereintermediateadvanced
Intermediate and up. The marked boat-zone entry rule and the summer crowd, more than the water, are what argue against an independent beginner here.

Rescue

+34 977 16 64 00

Lifeguard posts are staffed through the bathing season, with a rescue and surveillance boat kept at the port and available at all times, and a beach access held clear for ambulances. The catch is the calendar: kiting is not permitted during that same season, so the months you can legally ride here are the months with nobody watching the water.
Emergency number is 112, and the town hall is on +34 977 16 64 00 for what applies this year.

Launch

Sandy beach on the central El Vendrell shoreline, 2,371 m long and up to about 100 m wide at low water, fine soft sand, with the promenade running its whole length. Access is over wooden and concrete walkways and street parking is unattended. Entry and exit are through the marked boat channel with its yellow buoys.

Hazards riders report 9

  • bystanders
  • summer beach users
  • Bystanders and beach users, especially June, July and August.
  • Mandatory boat-zone entry and exit marked with yellow buoys.
  • Small to medium waves.
  • Pedestrian promenade and urban beach use immediately behind the sand.
  • No dedicated kite rescue.
  • Kitesurfing is not permitted during the bathing season, which runs from around Holy Week or 1 May to 30 September; riding then is a sanctionable offence, not a grey area.
  • The months with the most wind chance and the months with lifeguard cover are the months you are not allowed to ride.
Rules & access
2025: the El Vendrell beach ordinance covering Coma-ruga, Sant Salvador and El Francas was amended, initial approval 5 December 2024 and final approval published 3 March 2025. Article 20.2 does not permit kite-surf, kite-board, fly-surf, kite buggy or anything similar during the bathing season. Article 2 sets that season, as a general criterion, from the start of beach operations, usually Holy Week or 1 May, to 30 September, with the exact dates fixed each year by the Pla d'Usos; the amended text carries a stray extra word at that date, so confirm the current year's dates at the town hall. Article 20.1: during the bathing season a plain kite with nothing attached to it is flown only on the upper beach, between the bathers and the promenade. Outside the bathing zone, which is the buoyed area or, where nothing is buoyed, a 200 m strip along the beach, sailing craft and sports such as surf, windsurf and paddle surf are allowed; entry and exit go through the marked channels, perpendicular to the shore, at under 3 knots. Nothing in the ordinance bans kiting outside the bathing season.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Find the yellow-buoyed boat channel before rigging and use it for both entry and exit.
  • Stay off the water during the busy bathing hours in June, July and August unless the posted rules clearly allow riding.
  • Pick sessions off a short-range forecast and a look at the water, not off the 5 kt station average.
  • Ask at the town hall or a beach service what the current El Vendrell ordinance requires of kites; the online notices do not spell it out.
  • Ignore the Riuet spring when judging your suit: it runs 18-21 C year-round and the sea does not.
  • Check the dates before anything else. Kitesurfing is not permitted here during the bathing season, which usually runs from Holy Week or 1 May to 30 September.
  • The season that is open to kites is autumn and winter, which is also when nobody is watching the water. Ride with someone.
  • Find the yellow-buoyed boat channel before rigging and use it for both entry and exit; the channel crossing is perpendicular to the shore and under 3 knots.
  • Ask at the town hall on +34 977 16 64 00 for this year's Pla d'Usos dates; the ordinance fixes the season annually rather than by fixed calendar.
  • Ignore the Riuet spring when judging your suit: it runs 18-21 C year-round and the sea does not. The sea is around 25-26 C in July and August and about 13 C in January and February.
  • In summer, wind before midday is not worth the drive. The breeze fills around 11:00 and does its work between 14:00 and 17:00.

Getting there

Airport

Reus Airport (REU); Barcelona-El Prat (BCN) is another practical gateway.

Route

Coma-ruga sits on the El Vendrell coast with rail access through Sant Vicenc de Calders and Coma-ruga, but a car is easier with kite gear. Reus airport is about 45 minutes and 39 km away by road, against roughly two hours by train and bus; Sant Vicenc de Calders to Barcelona Sants takes under an hour.
