Garbi and Levante

15:00 · 16:00 · 17:00

On thermal days the wind builds from mid-morning, is usable around midday, peaks between 15:00 and 17:00 and dies at dusk — modelled hourly means roughly double from a night floor near 4 knots to about 8.3 knots at 16:00. Gradient Levante and Garbi days keep no such timetable and can be in at dawn.

The marks are the clock times the record names, laid on a 24-hour day. The bar between the first and the last covers those hours; it is not a promise of wind.

Badalona is on the metropolitan coast north of Barcelona, and Platja dels Pescadors is where the kites go up: in front of Club Natacio Badalona, with a second option farther north by Club Betulo. Two winds matter.
SW Garbi is the ordinary one and the more manageable one; E Levante comes in cross-onshore and stacks up waves and shorebreak, which turns an urban beach into a technical one. There are rocks and concrete in the water and shorebreak on the sand, which is why nobody learns to kite here.
As of 2026 kiting at Badalona is allowed outside high season only, and that is a municipal rule, so read the current Ajuntament de Badalona text before you drive over. What you get for the trouble is a session inside the Barcelona metropolitan area, and March, April and November are when wind and an empty beach overlap.
Water runs about 25 C in summer and 13 C in winter, so a shorty in August and a full suit for the March sessions.

Typical strength

No local station and no published range. The regional sea breeze that drives the thermal days runs 2-7 m/s, about 4-14 knots, and modelled afternoon means for this beach sit at 5.8-9.2 knots by month, strongest in March and April. Indicative: the sessions worth driving for come from a synoptic SW Garbi or E Levante gradient, not from the breeze.

Garbi is the common wind and the more forgiving one. Levante is the technical day, because it brings waves and shorebreak with it.
Riding happens outside high season. No official launch calendar is published for the current year.

The quiver, in words

Indicative, derived from the wind range rather than from local reporting: a 75-85 kg rider needs 12-17 m or a foil for the ordinary thermal afternoon and 9-12 m when a Garbi or Levante gradient day gets past 18 knots. Take a smaller wave-capable kite for Levante, which brings the shorebreak with it.

Direction to shore

Usable side-onshore to side-shore conditions; Levante is cross-onshore and more wave exposed.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Rescue

Seasonal only, June to September. Platja dels Pescadors has both a watch chair and a rescue post; Pont d'en Botifarreta is covered from the Torrebadal post, and Platja dels Patins a Vela, where the kites usually go up, has no rescue post of its own. Every beach carries sea-state flag poles in season and Pescadors has a public-address system.
Outside the bathing months nothing is staffed and 112 is the number.

Launch

The sand in front of the Club Natació is not Platja dels Pescadors but Platja dels Patins a Vela, the short 120 m beach immediately south between carrer de Mar and avinguda de Martí Pujol — and that is where the marked nautical channel is, next to the city dog beach.Platja dels Pescadors itself runs 470 m by about 55 m between the Riera de Matamoros and carrer de Mar, with the fishing boats, the Llotja and a lifeguard chair, but no channel of its own. The second channel is 625 m up the coast at Platja del Pont d'en Botifarreta, by Club Nàutic Bétulo.Badalona station is 150 m from Pescadors and the carrer de Mar underpass takes you under the N-II to the sand.

Rules & access
2026: the bathing season runs June to September, and through it every Badalona beach is buoyed to mark the 200 m bathing zone, with sea-state flag poles on the sand. Under the national coastal regulation, Royal Decree 876/2014 article 73, sail- and motor-driven craft are prohibited inside a buoyed bathing zone and launching must go through a properly marked channel; on unbuoyed coast the bathing zone is the first 200 m off a beach with a three-knot limit. Badalona has two marked nautical channels, one at Platja del Pont d'en Botifarreta by Club Nàutic Bétulo and one at Platja dels Patins a Vela in front of the Club Natació — Platja dels Pescadors, between them, has none. No municipal ordinance text naming kitesurfing was found, so the channels and the buoy line are the enforceable geometry to work with.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Scout the sand in front of Club Natacio before you rig; the beach is urban and full of hard edges.
  • Treat Levante as the technical day: more waves, more shorebreak, less room to land.
  • Plan the trip for outside high season and confirm the current municipal restriction locally before you commit the day.
  • Pack a full wetsuit outside high summer; winter water sits around 13 C.
  • Scout the sand in front of Club Natació before you rig; the beach is urban and full of hard edges.
  • If you ride in the bathing months, use one of the two marked nautical channels — Patins a Vela or Pont d'en Botifarreta. There is no channel at Pescadors itself.
  • March and April are the strongest afternoons of the year on the modelled record, and they fall outside the buoyed season.
