The spot

Location

Castelldefels is where Barcelona rides: a long sandy Mediterranean beach south of the city, close enough to Barcelona-El Prat airport that you can land and be on the water the same afternoon.

Wind

The working wind is the Garbi, a sunny-day SW to WSW thermal that arrives in the afternoon and comes in side-onshore for the beach. Do not expect lagoon water: chop and small waves are normal, with more size on stronger weather-system days.

Regulations and seasons

Schools, toilets, showers, beach bars and public transport make it easy, and it is also a busy public bathing beach. From June to September kiting is heavily regulated, and in 2026 independent riding means the weekday authorised zone, open only when the wind thresholds and the operating hours are met.

Spring and early summer are the strongest thermal period, when the land heats while the sea is still cold. Riders stop from mid-January to mid-February: cold, and mostly windless.

Rescue

Municipal lifeguards cover the beach in bathing season, and the 2026 authorisation puts two lifeguard huts and a watchtower on Platja de la Pineda, but nothing in it assigns a kite-specific rescue service and the regional authority disclaims liability for accidents on the beach.

Schools look after their own students. Independent riders in the zone should assume there is no organised kite rescue.

Launch

Rig on the sand inside the authorised kite area on Platja de la Pineda, run from the kite office on Passeig Maritim 159-161, between carrer 9 and carrer 9 bis. The 2026 authorisation gives kite-surf 7,550.34 m2 of beach there; on the sand the working strip is about 100 m wide, with a 200 m channel for going out and coming back.

2026: the regulated summer kite zone runs 01/06/2026 to 18/09/2026 inclusive, Monday to Friday only, closed on the public holidays 24/06, 14/08 and 11/09; hours are 15:00-19:00, lycra pickup until 18:15 and return by 18:45.

Access and entry

Access costs nothing, but riders must sign the zone form, collect a lycra and hold liability insurance covering kitesurfing, and the zone opens only above minimum sustained averages by discipline: foil 7 kt average with a 6 kt floor, surf/race 12 kt with an 11 kt floor, twintip 14 kt with a 13 kt floor.

Only riders who can hold their ground upwind may use it, because entry and exit are through the marked channel; past the channel in open water you may ride where you like, but you must come back through it.

Zone setup and prior years

The 2026 regional beach-use authorisation places kite-surf on Platja de la Pineda as occupation AN-101 over 7,550.34 m2 of sand, with entry/exit channel CA-104 that must meet the dimensions set by the Capitania Maritima and be buoyed so the channels and the bathing reserves are clearly separated; the municipal installation season for 2026 is 27 March to 4 October.

For comparison, the 2024 municipal programme ran 5 June to 25 September on weekdays 16:00-20:00, with a licence and an identifying vest issued at the kite-zone office on Passeig Maritim 159-161, between carrer 9 and carrer 9 bis. The older municipal beach ordinance prohibits kitesurf from 1 June to 30 September unless expressly authorised by the town hall; the regulated zone is that exception.

Rider tips

Be there in the afternoon. The Garbi builds through the day, and the morning is for coffee.
Check the zone-status page before you travel: the day's opening intention goes up before 13:30 and is then updated against the real wind.
Do not rig in summer until you have checked that year's zone, the lycra and registration process and the holiday closures, and cross-check the town hall against the operator because their published dates and hours differ from year to year.
Carry liability insurance that covers kitesurfing. You cannot sign into the zone without it.
Bring a big freeride kite or a foil. A marginal Mediterranean thermal is most of the season.
If you are learning, use a school during the regulated period: the independent channel needs upwind ability.
