Bogatell is a city beach that happens to be rideable, not a kite spot. Kiting on the Barcelona city beaches is prohibited during the summer bathing season, commonly 1 June to 30 September (2026), so the realistic window is spring, autumn and winter, when Levante comes in from the E or SE, onshore to side-onshore, and riders turn up at Bogatell and Mar Bella next door.
The water between the breakwaters is flat to choppy with small waves, and there is concrete close to the sand. The summer thermal around Barcelona is typically 12-18 knots; Levante and Gregal, the strong ones, reportedly reach 25-30 knots along the city beachfront, though no Bogatell figure exists.
SW Garbi blows offshore here, which is reason enough to sit it out. Strong currents are reported in north-easterly conditions. This is no beach to learn on: launch space shrinks the moment the sun comes out, and the concrete does not move.

fills in: Barcelona thermal wind follows an afternoon pattern, but no Bogatell-specific onset time is confirmed.

Typical strength

The summer thermal around Barcelona is typically 12-18 knots. Levante and Gregal, the stronger local winds, reportedly reach 25-30 knots at the city beaches generally; no Bogatell-specific figure was found.

Gustier and more crowd-dependent than a dedicated kite beach. Rideable when the right Levante or Garbi setup arrives.
Spring, autumn and winter are the realistic city-beach window, because the summer bathing season closes the beaches to kites. The best odds of a windy day fall between February and May and between October and December.

both

The quiver, in words

A 75-85 kg rider is on a 12 m for the moderate 15-knot days that make up most of the city-beach season, and on 8-9 m when a hard NE Gregal runs 25 knots and up.Indicative: 12 m at 15 knots is the local rule of thumb for 70-90 kg riders, the small-kite end is derived from the wind range rather than logged at Bogatell.

Direction to shore

NE Gregal arrives side-onshore at the city beachfront. E to SE Levante is onshore to side-onshore. SW Garbi is light and slightly offshore here, gusty with it, and the tower block at the south end of the beachfront blocks part of its entry into the bay.

Dominant direction

SW Garbi dominates the forecast for Barcelona, but it is the NE Gregal that actually gets people on the water. E to SE Levante also delivers.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Rescue

Lifeguards cover the Barcelona beaches only inside the bathing season, 10:30-18:30 in the medium season and 10:30-19:30 in the high season (2026). Outside those dates and outside those hours there is no lifeguard or rescue service on any city beach and the only number is 112. Bogatell is one of three beaches whose public toilets stay open year-round, 10:00-19:00, carries an information point in season, and has the Beach Directorate building on its breakwater. No kite-specific rescue and no standby boat.

Launch

Sandy urban beach between breakwaters, wide and long by Barcelona standards, with parking right alongside. It is the beachfront's gathering point for kiters and windsurfers, which is half the reason to use it rather than Barceloneta. Launch space still varies strongly with beach users and with the seasonal sports zones.

Space

Wide and long for a city beach, and it holds its sand better than the beaches south of it. From late March the marked sports areas take over: in the medium and high bathing seasons free sports use is confined to them, so the usable strip shrinks.

Rules & access
2026: kitesurfing is prohibited on the Barcelona city beaches from 1 June to 30 September inside the bathing zones. Surf, windsurf and paddle surf stay legal, but in the medium and high bathing seasons the buoyed bathing zone belongs to bathers alone and you must cross in and out through the marked boat channels. The 2026 beach sports plan places free unorganised sports areas on Bogatell and Mar Bella, and organised-activity areas on Bogatell and Nova Mar Bella; in medium and high season free sports use is confined to those marked areas, while in low season free activity may occupy up to half the beach area with no time limit. Organised or federated activity needs a municipal permit and runs 08:30 to 16:00. Season dates for 2026: high season 30 May to 13 September; medium season 28-31 March, 1-6 April, April weekends, 27-30 April, 1-29 May, 14-27 September and 3-4 October; the rest is low season. The municipal beach-sport decree in force names surf, windsurf and paddle surf and does not name kitesurf at all.

Rider tips

  • Read the current Ajuntament de Barcelona beach-sport decree and its marked zones before you rig; the bathing-season ban runs 1 June to 30 September (2026).
  • Sit out SW Garbi here, it blows offshore off the city beaches.
  • Ride early, or on the grey days; launch space disappears as soon as the sun is out.
  • Give the breakwaters and the concrete blocks a wide margin on the way in and out.
  • NE Gregal is the direction that works, and it brings the waves and the current with it.
  • From late March the free sports areas on Bogatell and Mar Bella are the only sand you may use for sport; the rest belongs to bathers.
  • Cross the buoy line through the marked boat channels, never over it.
  • Outside the bathing season nobody is watching the water. The number is 112.
