When it fills in

In summer a water-land thermal builds on top of the gradient and the reliable wind arrives from the afternoon onward, which is why the school schedules around the second half of the day. Outside the warm months there is no daily hour to plan around: the wind is whatever the weather system is doing.

Boiensdorf sits on the southern edge of the Salzhaff, a shallow brackish lagoon behind the Baltic coast of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The water is flat and stays standing depth over a strip roughly 200 m wide at the south end, which is why the school at Boiensdorf-Werder puts its training zone there and why the spot works for first lessons and early progression.
Freestylers get smooth water for tricks; wave riders have no reason to drive here. Usable wind runs from west round to northeast, and nobody has published a knots range or a month-by-month figure for the Salzhaff, so plan on spring through autumn and trust the forecast rather than the reputation.
Kiting here is not open coast: the Salzhaff is a protected area where the 2026 designation covers only Pepelow campsite and Boiensdorf, and watersports west of Boiensdorf harbor are reportedly forbidden, unchanged since at least 2020. On the water, the kitesurf area is to the right of the boat moorings and the windsurf area to their left.
Rigging is on grass by the parking and the motorhome pitch, and when the wind is up at weekends from May to September the standing area fills with students.

Typical strength

No wind statistics are published for the Salzhaff itself, so there is no measured range for this spot; the nearest reporting stations are 14-16 km away on the open coast and read differently. Locally a forecast of around 10 knots with sun is treated as a rideable day, because the afternoon thermal adds to it. Indicative, not measured.

Sheltered Baltic-lagoon wind, fine for flat-water riding. No local thermal pattern is confirmed and no reliable wind-strength range has been published.
Spring to autumn is the season the Salzhaff is sold on, with a fair wind probability. The exact best kite months for Boiensdorf are unconfirmed.

Direction to shore

mixed cross-shore to onshore on the southern Salzhaff edge; southerly flow would be offshore and is not a recommended direction.

Dominant direction

West through northeast, with west/southwest and northeast the frequent usable directions.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

The water

Type

lagoon

Standing depth

A standing-depth strip about 200 m wide at the southern end of the Salzhaff, with the school's own training zone inside it.

Tides

No tide to plan around. The training area is flat water with no tide and no waves.

Temperature

17°C summer · 4°C winter

Wetsuit

Use a full wetsuit for most sessions; a shorty may be tolerable in warm high summer, while winter requires thick cold-water neoprene with boots, gloves and hood.

Currents

No tide-driven current in the standing strip. The water exchange between the Salzhaff and the Baltic runs through a channel about 9 m deep between the Kieler Ort sandbank and the Boiensdorfer Werder, so depth changes abruptly once you leave the shallow south end.

4–20°C water
Sheltered brackish lagoon on the Salzhaff, shallow and flat, with a standing-depth school zone. Good water for learning and for tricks. The Salzhaff is ecologically sensitive, so kite use is tied to the designated spots.

Your level

beginnerintermediatenot for advanceds here
The shallow standing-depth lagoon and the VDWS school on site make Boiensdorf credible for lessons and early progression. Advanced riders can use it for flat water and freestyle, but nothing beyond trick practice is confirmed.

Rescue

The kite school runs a rescue boat and a transport boat, staffed while its courses and supervised sessions are on the water in its Kiterevier. Nothing covers independent riders outside lessons, and the school season runs only from 1 July to 18 October. For anything serious the general emergency number is 112.

Launch

Launch and rigging are at the Boiensdorf-Werder kite and school area on the Salzhaff, where the school keeps its training meadows and station. Grass rigging next to the parking and the motorhome facilities, with paid parking within 50 m and room for 20-30 cars. The kitesurf area is to the right of the boat moorings, the windsurf area to their left. Stones sit in the grass as well as in the shallows, so check where you drop the kite.

Hazards riders report 8

  • very shallow water
  • beginners in the training area
  • Very shallow water in the standing area.
  • Students and school traffic in the training zone.
  • Ecologically sensitive Salzhaff protected area with designated kite locations only.
  • Kiting and windsurfing are reported forbidden west of Boiensdorf harbor.
  • Stones in the shallows and in the grass rigging area.
  • A water-exchange channel about 9 m deep between the Kieler Ort sandbank and the Boiensdorfer Werder, so the shallow ground ends suddenly to the north.
Rules & access
2026: kitesurfing on the Salzhaff is designated only at Pepelow campsite and at Boiensdorf, and the Boiensdorf spot itself is freely accessible at any hour. All watersports use of the water west of Boiensdorf harbour is banned, kitesurfing and windsurfing included; this is a standing year-round area closure tied to the bird-protection and FFH designation of that part of the lagoon, not a dated seasonal one, and it has held since at least 2020. On the water keep to the marked zones: kite area right of the boat moorings, windsurf area to their left. Sleeping in a camper at the spot's own car parks is reportedly prohibited and fined; the motorhome pitch 150 m back is the legal option.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Ask at the Boiensdorf school where this year's kite boundary runs before you ride outside the training area.
  • Stay east of the harbor; watersports west of it are off limits unless current beach signage marks otherwise.
  • Rig on the grass by the parking and motorhome pitch, and keep right of the boat moorings so you are not in the windsurf area.
  • Bring booties if shells and a shallow lagoon bottom bother your feet.
  • Expect lesson traffic in the standing area on summer days when the wind is up, and give the school zone room.
  • The on-site school works a short season, roughly 1 July to 18 October, with courses on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Outside that there is no boat cover.
  • Come for the afternoon in summer. The thermal is what turns a soft forecast into a session.
  • Parking at the spot is paid and sleeping in the van there is fined; use the motorhome pitch 150 m away.
