On the clock

07:00 · 19:00

Frontal wind, so there is no hour to plan a session around; it can blow at 07:00 or at 19:00 and the forecast is the only guide. The exception is the summer easterly, reinforced by a thermal, which builds through the afternoon and usually ends up stronger than the numbers said in the morning.

The marks are the clock times the record names, laid on a 24-hour day. The bar between the first and the last covers those hours; it is not a promise of wind.

Loissin Waldkante is a beginner spot on the Greifswalder Bodden, a short drive from Greifswald on Germany's Baltic coast, and the point of it is depth: you can stand for about 400 m out, waist- to chest-deep, across a wide flat area.
Close in the water is flat to choppy; past the sandbar there is small Bodden swell that does not break. The beach is the catch, a sand strip of reportedly about 15 m, so lines get crossed, and in July and August you share it with bathers and school groups. Season is April to October.
Spring and autumn are windier, July and August warmer, busier and often lighter, and an easterly comes in stronger than forecast because of a local thermal; the usual directions are SW through NW, with W-NW the best. Water runs 10-20 C through the season, so a full wetsuit even in June.
The campsite, the kite station at Am Strandweg 1 and the beach bar are all on the spot, which is why the schools bring learners here.
Foilers and anyone on long fins have to wade well out before the water is deep enough, and before roaming away from the established riding area check the current reed-belt and protection-zone rules, because some Bodden waters are closed seasonally or year-round.

Character

mixed

fills in: Frontal wind, so there is no hour to plan a session around; it can blow at 07:00 or at 19:00 and the forecast is the only guide. The exception is the summer easterly, reinforced by a thermal, which builds through the afternoon and usually ends up stronger than the numbers said in the morning.

Typical strength

No measurement at the spot. The nearest inland station averages 9 kt over the year and the nearest offshore island station 13 kt, both from WSW, so the Bodden shoreline sits somewhere between the two. A working day here is roughly 12-18 kt. Spring and autumn fronts push past 20 kt; midsummer often stalls under 10. Wind of some kind is reported on about 60 percent of days, which is not the same as 60 percent rideable, and the range across the year runs from dead calm to storm force.

Generally moderate, beginner-friendly Bodden conditions, with an additional thermal effect that can make easterlies stronger than forecast. Wind is variable and frontal, from 0-10 Bft, best in spring and autumn and lighter in summer.
The practical kite season is April to October. Spring and autumn are reported as windier; July and August are warmer but busier and can be lighter.

The quiver, in words

Indicative, read off the wind range rather than counted at the beach. For 75-85 kg on a twintip a 12 m is the size you use most, a 15 m covers the light July and August days that are the norm here, and a 9 m is for the spring and autumn fronts that hold above 20 kt.Pack the small one for east days: the easterly comes in harder than the forecast because of the local thermal. Foilers get away with far less kite, but need to wade past the sandbar first.

Direction to shore

W-NW is the best direction. The angle to shore varies across the W-N-E window on this Bodden shoreline; there is no single value.

Dominant direction

Rideable from west through north to east. The usual wind is SW, WSW, W, WNW or NW; NE turns up in summer.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

The water

Type

lagoon

Standing depth

Very large shallow standing area, with standing-depth water reported extending about 400 m, and elsewhere described as waist- to chest-deep across a vast flat area.

Tides

Tide independent.

Temperature

Summer 10-20 C during the April-October season; no high-summer-only average is published.

Wetsuit

Wetsuit strongly recommended in season; off-season riding requires a thick wetsuit with hood/mask, shoes and gloves.

Currents

No currents reported for Greifswalder Bay.

2–21°C water
Flat to choppy Bodden water close to shore, with small non-breaking swell or Bodden wind waves farther outside the shallow area/sandbar. No groynes are reported at the Waldkante launch.

Your level

Big standing area, flat water and schools on site: a strong beginner and progression spot. Advanced riders use it for freeride, foiling or the occasional small swell; it is not a wave spot.

Rescue

No public rescue boat is confirmed and there is no lifeguard on this beach. The station at Am Strandweg 1 and the one-instructor school at Feldweg 4 supervise their own students only, so ask before you count on either coming out for you.
The emergency number is 112. In practice the shallows are the safety net: you can stand and walk back from most of the riding area, which is why the schools use it.

Launch

Launch directly from the small sandy beach at Loissin Waldkante/Bungalowsiedlung into shallow water, close to the camping area and kitesafe.de station at Am Strandweg 1.

Hazards riders report 8

  • park only where permitted; local ticketing noted
  • small beach
  • Small/narrow sandy beach despite a large shallow riding area.
  • Crowding and beach-user conflicts in July and August.
  • Parking restrictions near the roundabout and the camping access; ticketing happens.
  • Very shallow Bodden water and sandbar outside the launch can be unsuitable for foils or long fins until deeper water is reached.
  • Mecklenburg-Vorpommern nature and reed/sensitive zones should be checked locally before riding outside the established spot area.
  • Seagrass in the shallows; long fins and foils collect it.
Rules & access
2026: no parking fee for kiting at Loissin Waldkante, but read the signs, do not park in the roundabout and expect the Ordnungsamt to ticket. No kite-specific rules are reported; check locally. Across Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, check protection zones, reed belts and water-use rules before riding away from the established area, because some waters are closed year-round or seasonally.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Launch from the established beach and keep your lines short and tidy; the sand strip is small and everyone rigs on it.
  • Read the parking signs, and never leave the car in the roundabout or across the camping access; the Ordnungsamt tickets here.
  • Foiling or long fins: wade out past the shallow area and the sandbar before you get going.
  • Full wetsuit even in the main season; the Bodden runs 10-20 C from April to October.
  • In July and August give beach users and school groups room, and expect lighter wind than in May or September.
  • An easterly often blows harder than forecast here; bring the smaller kite too on east days.
