Gager is a harbor-side spot on the Hagensche Wiek, on the Mönchgut peninsula in southeast Rügen, and the bay is the easy part: protected, comparatively flat, standing depth in a sandy strip up to about 150 m wide along the shore, deeper only at the harbor entrance. W and NW are the directions to come for.
W comes through freely and NW is the cleanest, with riders running parallel to the shore; SW to W also works and NE is reportedly good too, while easterly wind close to shore sits in the wind shadow. The access is the problem.
The rigging meadow is very small, the entry is small, the harbor entrance must stay clear for fishing and sport boats, and the reed belt is full of nesting birds, so the safest launch is often from the water.
Water is warm for the Baltic, about 18.5 C on average in summer with August around 19.6 C, and about 3.1 C in winter; in still, warm spells check the bathing-water advisories for cyanobacteria and Vibrio.
The Hagensche Wiek lies in the Southeast Rügen Biosphere Reserve, where shallow areas are closed to navigation to the 2 m depth line year-round with harbor and access exceptions, and how that applies to kites at Gager is unconfirmed, so ask before leaving the accepted shore strip.
Treat it as a quiet flatwater spot for competent freeriders or supervised learners, not a teaching lagoon; the only wind number on record is one session on 3 June 2010, about 20 kt in N/NW on a 9 m kite.

Character

Typical strength

One session on 3 June 2010 recorded about 20 kt in N/NW wind on a 9 m kite; a single example, not a seasonal range.

Cleanest in W and NW, which enter the Hagensche Wiek unobstructed. Easterly wind is shadowed close to shore; current 2026 local guidance on that is unconfirmed.
No Gager-specific best months. Rügen in general has its stronger frontal periods in spring and autumn and lighter wind in summer, and the island has an alternative spot for almost every direction.

The quiver, in words

Indicative. There is one session on record, roughly 20 knots on a 9 m, and no local quiver count at all.Read against that, a 75-85 kg rider takes 11-13 m for the light Bodden days, 9-10 m at 18-22 knots and 7-9 m when a front pushes past 22. The bay is flat, so sizes behave the way they would on a lake rather than on a sea state.

Direction to shore

W is side-onshore and lets you run down toward Alt Reddevitz, with noticeably bigger chop once you leave the shallow strip. NW is the cleanest angle, arriving over open water with nothing in the way and giving parallel-to-shore riding in standing depth. NE comes in steady from the Middelhagen side.E is offshore: sheltered and patchy in the first metres off the beach and more consistent the further out you go, which is the wrong way round for a launch this small.

Dominant direction

Westerly wind (SW, WSW, W) and the NE-to-E sector both work. W comes through freely, NW is the best direction because nothing blocks it, and NE is reportedly good as well; they are different parts of one usable range, not competing claims.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Type

lagoon

Standing depth

Riders mostly run parallel to the shore in standing depth; only the harbor entrance is deeper. The sandy entry shelves gently into a shallow strip up to about 150 m wide.

Tides

Baltic Bodden/lagoon spot with no tidal dependency; no tide table or tide-sensitive guidance is published for Gager.

Temperature

18.5°C summer · 3.1°C winter

Wetsuit

Wetsuit needed most of the year; shorty may work in high summer, but spring/autumn need a warmer full suit and winter requires thick cold-water neoprene with boots, gloves and hood.

2–21°C water
Protected Hagensche Wiek lagoon, flat to choppy. The bay is comparatively flat and makes hardly any waves, though W and SW can build higher chop outside the standing-depth area. It sits in the Southeast Rügen Biosphere Reserve and its shallow edges are fringed with reed.

Your level

beginnerintermediateadvanced
Beginners are not excluded, but the small entry, the harbor mouth and the reed belt make it less forgiving than the big school spots. It is really a freeride and freestyle spot; a beginner needs a competent launch helper and must keep away from the reeds and the harbor entrance.

What riders come here for

Small local Mönchgut harbor-side spot rather than a major school base. It can attract freeriders/freestylers on good W/NW days, but the launch is constrained and the setting is quieter than larger staffed Rügen spots.

Rescue

No rescue boat and no organized safety service at the harbor entry; treat sessions as self-rescue unless supervision is arranged directly with a local school.

Launch

Small meadow and a strip of sandy shore by the harbor mole in Gager. The entry is sandy and shelves gently; the start and landing meadow is very small, and launching the kite from the water is the safest option.

Hazards riders report 10

  • harbor entrance
  • reed beds and bird nesting areas
  • wind shadow close to shore in easterly wind
  • Harbor entrance is deeper and must be kept clear for fishing and sport boats.
  • Reed belts and bird nesting areas; keep a large safety distance and do not disturb flora/fauna.
  • Very small launch/landing meadow and small entry.
  • Easterly wind can be wind-shadowed near shore.
  • Broader Hagensche Wiek shallow-water and protected-area navigation restrictions may apply; the exact kite interpretation is unconfirmed.
  • Warm shallow Baltic/Bodden water can carry cyanobacteria and Vibrio risk in summer conditions.
  • Easterly wind is offshore: light at the beach and stronger the further out you drift.
Rules & access
  • 2026: keep a large safety distance from the reed belt, where many birds breed and nest.
  • 2026: the Hagensche Wiek is part of the Southeast Rügen Biosphere Reserve; in protection zones I and II federal waterways may not be navigated outside fairways or approved transit and access waters, and the shallow areas of the Hagensche Wiek are closed to navigation year-round to the 2 m depth line, with harbor and access exceptions. Exact kite-specific boundaries for Gager have not been found.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Launch from the water when the meadow is full; it is the safest option at this entry.
  • Keep the harbor entrance completely clear; fishing and sport boats use it.
  • Give the reed belt a wide berth; birds breed and nest in it.
  • Pick Gager over Alt Reddevitz when the wind is NW.
  • Ask a local school or a harbor-side rider where the accepted riding area ends before you head out past the shore strip.
  • In warm, still summer spells check the Rügen bathing-water advisories before you go in.
  • Park at the harbor wall or in the village center: from Middelhagen drive through Lobbe toward Groß Zicker, turn right on Zum Höft, then keep right in Gager.

FAQ

Is Gager suitable for beginners?

It is listed for beginners through experts, but the small rigging meadow, harbor entrance and reed belt leave little margin for error, so it suits competent freeriders or closely supervised learners best.

What is the wind like?

Southwest through west is the standard setup, and northwest is considered especially favorable here because it enters Hagensche Wiek freely.

Are there rules to follow?

Riders are asked to keep a large safety distance from the reed belt, where many birds breed and nest, and to keep the harbor entrance completely clear of kiters.

Are there kite schools nearby?

Yes, several Mönchgut-area schools operate near Gager, including ProBoarding Rügen, Surfoase Mönchgut and Berliner Kiteschule.
