When it fills in

No daily switch-on. The wind is synoptic, so it runs through the night as readily as through the afternoon and holds only as long as the gradient does; on a slack day no hour will rescue the session. A summer sea breeze can add a little from midday, on top of whatever is already there. Indicative regional pattern, with no hourly record for the Wiek itself.

Alt Reddevitz is a small fishing village just west of Middelhagen on Rügen's Mönchgut peninsula, and the launch is a big meadow on the Hagensche Wiek, the shallow Bodden bay behind it. Southwest is the direction.
It comes into the bay clean but onshore at the entry, so you launch from the meadow and ride south of the village, where there is room and a shore to come back to. West and northwest arrive gusty off the Reddevitz peninsula and easterlies blow offshore; on those days Gager or another Mönchgut spot is the better call.
The water is flat, light chop at most in a strong wind, standing depth near the shore and 2-5 m out in the bay, so the shallow part is a strip, not the whole Wiek. This is a beginner and freeride bay, and anyone after waves will be bored by lunchtime.
Keep clear of the fishing boats moored in front of the village. The Hagensche Wiek lies in the Südost-Rügen Biosphere Reserve, where the shallows out to the 2 m depth line are closed to navigation all year (2026), and nobody has published where a kite may and may not go; water is about 19-20 C in July-August and around 3 C in winter, so it is a wetsuit spot nearly all year.

Character

synoptic

fills in: No daily switch-on.

Typical strength

Nothing measures the Wiek. The nearest Rugen station with a long record, at Putbus about 15 km up the Bodden, averages 8-9 knots month by month with gusts of 13-16, and reaches force 4 or more on roughly a fifth of its readings. October to April are the windy months, August and September the lightest. Indicative for the level here rather than a figure from the spot.

Clean in SW. W and NW turn turbulent under the Reddevitz peninsula and easterlies are offshore at the launch. No wind statistics exist for the spot itself.
No best months are published for Alt Reddevitz. On Rügen generally, spring and autumn bring the frontal wind and high summer is lighter; when the direction is wrong here, another Rügen spot usually has it right.

The quiver, in words

Indicative, converted from the regional wind figures rather than a local list. For 75-85 kg: a 12 m covers the 13-17 knot days that make up most of the usable ones, 9-10 m the 18-22 band, 7-8 m once an autumn or winter front pushes past 25. High summer here is often the big kite or a foil, because August and September are the lightest months of the year.

Direction to shore

Onshore in SW at the entry; riding is safer south of the launch.

Dominant direction

SW, which enters Hagensche Wiek cleanly. W and NW come gusty off the Reddevitz peninsula; easterlies are offshore at the entry.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Standing depth

Standing depth near the launch on most days. The bay itself is mostly 2-5 m deep, so the shallow area is a strip along the shore, not the whole Wiek.

Tides

Baltic Bodden/lagoon spot with no tidal dependency; no tide-sensitive guidance is published for Alt Reddevitz.

Temperature

Summer No measurement at the spot; nearby Gager averages about 18.5 C over summer and Rügen 18.7 C, with July-August at about 19-20 C.

Winter No measurement at the spot; nearby Gager averages about 3.1 C in winter and Rügen about 2.5 C.

Wetsuit

Full suit most of the year. A shorty works for some in high summer; winter means thick neoprene plus boots, gloves, hood.

2–21°C water
Flat, protected water on the Hagensche Wiek. A strong wind raises light chop that does not bother freeriding; nothing here is demanding, which is the point for beginners.

Your level

beginnerintermediatenot for advanceds here
A beginner bay: shallow, protected, undemanding. Intermediates freeride in flat water or light chop; advanced riders get no waves and nothing to push against.

Nothing on site. No lifeguard, no station and no boat standing by at the meadow, and no beach service is posted at Alt Reddevitz. The sea-rescue stations on Rugen are at Breege, Glowe and Sassnitz, all on the outer coast and a long way round from this bay.
Emergency call is 112; at sea it is Bremen Rescue on +49 421 53687-0, VHF channel 16 with DSC on channel 70. The practical cover here is a buddy on the shore and shallow water near the launch you can stand up in.

Hazards riders report 9

  • fishing boats in front of Alt Reddevitz
  • gustier W and NW wind from the Reddevitz peninsula
  • offshore easterly winds
  • Numerous fishing boats moored in front of Alt Reddevitz; keep clear of them.
  • W and NW wind can be gusty because the Reddevitz peninsula disrupts the flow.
  • Easterly wind is offshore at the entry and better spots exist for that direction.
  • Onshore SW wind at the entry; ride south of the launch for safer room and return-to-shore options.
  • Navigation restrictions cover the shallow, protected parts of Hagensche Wiek; how they apply to kites is unconfirmed.
  • Cyanobacteria blooms and Vibrio bacteria turn up in warm, shallow Bodden water in summer.
Rules & access
2026: keep clear of the fishing boats moored in front of Alt Reddevitz; the accepted riding area is south of the entry. Federal navigation rule in force since 2016 and unchanged in 2026: in protection zones I and II of the Sudost-Rugen biosphere reserve, federal waterways may not be navigated outside the marked fairways, the water areas released for through traffic, or the direct approaches to harbours and approved landing places and berths. Craft without an engine are exempted only on the Having, the Kaming and the Zickersee, and only while keeping at least 100 m off the bank; the Hagensche Wiek is not named in that exemption. At the Zickersee entrance sport craft may also run up to 200 m north or south along the west bank, again at 100 m from the shore. Which protection zone covers the Hagensche Wiek has not been published in a form that settles what a kite may do at Alt Reddevitz, so ask at Gager harbour or a Monchgut school before you ride the bay.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Come on a SW forecast. In NW the Reddevitz peninsula chops the wind up; drive to Gager or another Mönchgut spot instead.
  • Launch from the meadow at the entry, then ride south of the village; the entry itself is onshore in SW and has the boats in front of it.
  • Give the fishing boats moored in front of Alt Reddevitz a wide berth, and stay out of the harbour approach.
  • Do not rig here in an easterly; it is offshore at the entry, and other Rügen spots work in that direction.
  • Ask locally where the accepted riding area ends before you cross the shallows; in the Biosphere Reserve the 2 m depth line marks the closed zone and no kite map exists.
  • Park near the roundabout or by the Störtebeker distillery and sleep in Alt Reddevitz, Gager or Middelhagen; there is nothing kite-specific at the water.
  • Come on a SW forecast. In NW the Reddevitz peninsula chops the wind up; drive to Gager or another Monchgut spot instead.
  • Do not rig here in an easterly; it is offshore at the entry, and other Rugen spots work in that direction.
  • Park near the roundabout or by the Stortebeker distillery and sleep in Alt Reddevitz, Gager or Middelhagen; there is nothing kite-specific at the water.
  • The engineless-craft exemption on the neighbouring Bodden waters comes with a 100 m distance from the bank, and this bay is not on the exemption list at all. Ask at Gager before you assume the ride south is legal as well as accepted.
  • Reckon on two hours and 170 km of driving from Rostock-Laage, longer in the summer queues onto the island.
  • There is no rescue here. Put 112 and Bremen Rescue on +49 421 53687-0 in your phone before you rig.
