Nonnevitz is a Baltic wave beach on the north coast of Rügen, between Kreptitz and Kap Arkona. Long, sandy, with sandbars that hold the wave outside and take the edge off the shorebreak. West and east are the clean sideshore directions.
Northwest is reportedly the strongest setup, with outside waves up to about 4 m, and the west-wind wave that breaks on the sandbank about 100 m out is among the most powerful on Rügen.
Beginners should skip it: the current will take your feet, cross-seas make it hectic, there are stones in the knee-deep water, and once the wind goes too northerly you get luv-stau off the dunes. There is no rescue boat.
You park by the Regenbogen campsite and carry your gear several hundred metres to the beach, which is why the crowd stays thin.

Character

synoptic

fills in: Frontal Baltic wind with no daily thermal cycle, so nothing fills in at a set hour; it runs day and night while the system lasts. Pick your slot off the forecast, not off the clock.

Typical strength

Nothing is measured at the beach. The nearest exposed station on this same north-facing coast averages 14 knots year-round with gusts near 20, which is indicative for Nonnevitz. The wave days people drive up for run well above that.

Pressure-system Baltic wind, the same pattern as the rest of Rügen: Scandinavian lows bring westerly flow, a stable high to the east brings easterlies.
No dependable monthly wind table for the spot. The days that matter are strong west and northwest wave days. Summer is the busy season because of the camping next door, and that is crowd season, not proven wind season.

The quiver, in words

Indicative, with no local quiver reports: a 75-85 kg rider is on about 9 m for the classic 20-25 knot west and northwest wave days, 7 m when it turns properly stormy, and 12 m on the lighter east days. Waves and cross-sea here reward going a size down from the flat-water number.

Direction to shore

W and E are the clean sideshore directions. Northerly is onshore and brings luv-stau off the dunes plus awkward current-against-wind water. Offshore directions do not work at all here because the dunes kill and scramble the wind.

Dominant direction

W and E are the sideshore directions. NW reportedly gives the strongest wave setup; westerly, northwesterly and northeasterly are the directions people come for.

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Type

Standing depth

The wide sandy beach shelves gradually, with wading depth about 100 m out to the sandbank where the waves break and stones scattered in the knee-deep water inside that. Distances for the other sandbar sections along the beach are unconfirmed.

Tides

Baltic open-coast spot; no tide-dependent riding window was found.

Temperature

17.8°C summer · 4°C winter

Wetsuit

Usually a wetsuit is needed on Rügen; nearby Juliusruh averages about 17.8 C in summer and 4 C in winter, so summer riders often use a shorty or thin full suit and winter requires full cold-water neoprene.

Currents

The current runs hard enough to take your feet in the shallows, and with a westerly it sets east along the coast. After a breakage there is no quick shore to reach and the drift carries away from the beach. When the wind turns too northerly you get current plus dune wind shadow at the same time.

4–20°C water
Long broad sandy Baltic beach on Wittow's north coast, with several sandbars sheltering the beach from the worst breaking surf. It is a wave spot, not a sheltered beginner lagoon, and conditions can become cross-sea and rough.

Your level

Intermediate to advanced. Not a place to learn wave riding: the current and the shore conditions are the problem. Good days here are advanced wave sessions.

Rescue

No lifeguard, no rescue boat, no rescue gear at the beach. Nothing is stationed here and after a breakage there is no quick safe shore, so a solo session in marginal conditions carries real consequence. The campsite reception 500-600 m back is the nearest staffed building; everything else is a phone call to 112.

Launch

Launch from the long sandy beach below the Wittow north-coast access by Regenbogencamp Nonnevitz/Bakenberg. The road runs via Kuhle, then Gramtitz/Bakenberg to the Regenbogencamp; the walk from parking to the camping area is about 500 m to 600 m.

  • Cross-seas can make conditions bumpy and hectic.
  • Northerly wind can create luv-stau/wind shadow and difficult current/wind interaction.
  • Large waves: NW reportedly builds outside waves up to about 4 m, and the west-wind wave, one of the most powerful on Rügen, breaks on a sandbank about 100 m out.
  • Long carry from parking/camping access to the beach.

  • Cross-seas make the water bumpy and hectic.
  • Northerly wind brings luv-stau and dune wind shadow together with the current.

  • Long carry, 500-600 m, from parking and camping access to the beach.
Rules & access
2026: no official kite zone, ban or bathing-season restriction specific to Nonnevitz appears in a municipal or park document. A rider comment claims kiting is forbidden here, and nothing official supports it. Read the signs at the Regenbogen/Nonnevitz beach access, keep out of the bathing area in summer, and respect the Wittow dune and Kreptitzer Heide protection rules.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Check the knee-deep water for stones before you ride close to shore.
  • Ride W or E for clean sideshore; when it swings north expect luv-stau and rougher water.
  • Do not learn to wave ride here; the current and the shore conditions are the problem.
  • Budget a 500-600 m gear carry from the parking and camping access.
  • Read the signs at the beach access; no official kite-zone page exists for Nonnevitz.

FAQ

Is it suitable for beginners?

No. Current strong enough to knock riders off their feet, plus difficult cross-seas, make it unsuitable for wave beginners.

What is the wind like?

West and east give clean sideshore conditions, while northwest produces the strongest setup with outside waves up to about 4 m.

What hazards should I know about?

Strong current, stones in shallow water, and wind-shadow or luv-stau effects when the wind turns northerly.

How do I get there?

Access is via a long sandy beach below the Regenbogencamp Nonnevitz/Bakenberg approach, with a 500-600 m walk from parking to the water.
