The spot

Dranske sits on the Wieker Bodden side of the Wittow peninsula in northern Rügen, with the watersports base at Am Ufer doing most of the organising.

Water and conditions

The water is a shallow sandy lagoon, flat to choppy, about 150 x 500 m of it close to the launch with no stones on the bottom.

That makes it a lesson and freestyle spot; anyone who came for waves has driven to the wrong side of the island.

Wind directions

NE through SE is the sector to want, easterlies most of all, and the shape of the Bug and Dranske shoreline accelerates them, with a Venturi south of the village that can leave the water far windier than the beach feels.

West wind is the problem here: it comes off the land at the launch, and Wiek across the water is where riders get sent instead.

School zone and seasons

The kite and school zone is marked and moves every year, and during teaching hours independent riding is confined to deep water and needs at least VDWS Kitelevel 5, so ask at the station before you rig.

Spring and autumn are the credible wind seasons, March to May and September to November; summer is busier and still works on NE and E days, with the Wittower Testival on July 24-26, 2026.

In a warm spell the Bodden bathing water can bloom with cyanobacteria, and Vibrio risk rises above 18 C, which matters if you are riding with open cuts.

Typical strength

No wind statistics are published for Dranske itself. The nearest long-record coastal station, at Kap Arkona about 15 km east, averages 14 knots with 20 knot gusts across a record running from June 1999 to July 2026, which is an exposed-headland figure and reads high for a sheltered Bodden. Working easterly days here fall in the high teens to mid twenties, a band that is indicative rather than measured. The Venturi south of the village adds to whatever number the forecast gives.

Frontal Baltic wind with local acceleration. The shoreline works as a guide rail for NE, and a strong Venturi south of Dranske boosts east and west wind alike, so what you read from the launch is not what you get on the water. West is the higher-risk direction here, offshore at the beach, and Wiek is the alternative.

March to May and September to November are the best months, with autumn-to-spring depressions doing the work and summer running lighter. The watersport and event season runs from May into October in 2026, including the Wittower Testival on July 24-26, 2026 for kiting, wingfoil, sailing and windsurfing.

Summer NE and E wind works but comes less often, and a July windsurf festival is no proof of reliable summer kite wind.

Closest to the launch the riding area runs about 150 x 500 m; the shallow zone off the main entry has been put at 250 to 300 m wide, and the water at the entry itself can be under knee-deep, so expect a short wade before there is enough depth to ride.Figures disagree between sources, and the school and kite-zone boundaries move year to year, so check the free-riding footprint on site.

There is no permanent public water-rescue service and no supervised bathing beach at Dranske. In practice the cover is the watersports base: staff know which kite is yours and keep an eye on riders during supervised sessions.

For anything serious offshore it is the national sea-rescue service, reached on VHF channel 16 or DSC channel 70 under the call sign Bremen Rescue, or on 0421 53687-0 to the coordination centre in Bremen; 112 works from land.

A 2026 VDWS rescue workshop appears on the base calendar, which is a course, not a standing service.

Launch

Bodden-side launch at Rügen Piraten, Am Ufer 14 in Dranske: a large grass rigging area, a marked kite and school zone, sandy bottom, with the surf beach and parking reached from the village toward the small pier and Am Ufer. The sand itself is a small strip, so rig on the grass and launch out of the shallow water.

Wind

Westerly winds are offshore/covered at the Dranske launch and carry elevated safety risk; local school recommends switching to Wiek or using Dranske only by arrangement.
Local Venturi acceleration south of Dranske can make wind much stronger on the water than it appears from the beach.
Wind over land can be gustier, especially outside the recommended easterly sector.
No lifeguard or public water-rescue service on the beach; help offshore means calling the sea-rescue service.

The posted spot rules: kiting at Dranske uses a marked kite and school area with a large rigging meadow; during school hours, independent kiting is deep water only and requires at least VDWS Kitelevel 5; west-wind use carries elevated risk and should be arranged with the school, with Wiek recommended instead.

The kite zone reportedly changes every year, so ask the local kite school for the current one.

Access is on the surf beach only, and the riding zones must be respected.

During school hours, stay out of the training area unless you hold VDWS Kitelevel 5 and can ride the deep water.
Check the bathing-water notice in a warm summer spell: the Dransker Boddenstrand gets cyanobacteria, and Vibrio risk climbs above 18 C.
Bring your own freeride kit unless you have booked rental or supervised riding with the school.
Parking at the launch is free, and the grass meadow is where you rig; the sand strip is too small for a full setup.

Getting there

Airport

Rostock-Laage (RLG) is the nearest regional airport; Berlin Brandenburg (BER) and Hamburg (HAM) are larger but much farther practical options.

Route

Drive to Rügen via Stralsund and continue north to Wittow/Dranske; from Stralsund, the route takes the Rügen roads toward Bergen/Sassnitz, then L30 toward Sagard/Altenkirchen and into Dranske. The Wittower Fähre is a useful shortcut for the north of Rügen and takes about 8 minutes for pedestrians, bikes and vehicles up to 30 t when operating.
