Thiessow is on the west side of the Thiessow/Klein Zicker land tongue on Rügen's Mönchgut, facing the Greifswalder Bodden, and which spot you get depends on the wind.
Southwest is the best wave direction, side-onshore with shorebreak and up to about 2 m of surf; west and northwest also bring waves, with some wind shadow in the northern part on a northwest.
East wind is offshore and turns the whole thing into flat freeride water, and that is the day to be honest about whether you can get back upwind on your own.
Standing depth runs roughly 30-70 m out, or about 50 m parallel to shore depending on who measured, narrowest by the stone wall on the left and widest toward Klein Zicker.
Fish traps sit 200-300 m off the beach in summer, the marked stone wall pulls a suction current so keep 20-30 m off it, and there is current near Thiessower Haken if you ride too far south. Sea grass piles up in a southwest, so bring a weed fin.
Windsurfers have ridden here for a long time under the Thiewaii name, and the school and campsite scene on the rigging meadow is well established, beginner courses included; independent novices should still think twice, given the offshore east and the shorebreak in southwest.
Westerly depressions from autumn to spring are the wind, so March-May and September-November are the months, and wind yield for the area is about 50%.

Character

synoptic

Good direction-dependent variety: SW gives the best wave but stronger shorebreak and sea grass, NW can give waves with some wind shadow in the northern area, and E gives very flat offshore water. Wind yield for the Thiessow/Klein Zicker area is about 50%.
Westerly depressions are best from fall to spring and summer is lighter, with March-May and September-November as best months; May/June and September/October are noted for the best wind yield.

Strength

No knot figure is published for this spot.

Direction to shore

SW is onshore/side-onshore on the west-side launch; east wind is offshore but creates flatwater.

Dominant direction

West winds bring waves, east wind gives flat freeride water. Best is SW, rideable S-NW (SW, WSW, W, WNW and NW all work); westerly low-pressure winds from fall to spring are the main season.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Standing depth

About 50 m standing area parallel to shore, reported elsewhere as about 30 m on the left/stone-wall side to 70 m toward Klein Zicker.

Tides

Tide independent.

Temperature

Summer Water maximum about 22 C in summer, normally around 15 C.

Winter About 0-4 C in winter, with February lows around 1.7 C; this is the general Thiessow Baltic average rather than a west-side-specific reading.

Wetsuit

Usually a wetsuit is needed; high summer can allow a shorty for some weeks, while winter requires thick neoprene with gloves, mask/hood and shoes.

Currents

Current near Thiessower Haken; the marked stone wall also creates a suction effect.

2–21°C water
West side of the Thiessow/Klein Zicker land tongue on the Greifswalder Bodden side. Conditions range from flatwater in offshore east wind to 2 m waves in stronger SW/NW/westerly setups.

Your level

beginnerintermediateadvanced
There is a real local school scene with entry-level courses, but independent beginners need caution: the same spot can be offshore in east wind, onshore/shorebreak in southwest wind, and affected by fish traps, current and a stone wall. Intermediates and advanced riders get the most out of the wave and freeride variety.

The scene

What riders come here for

freeridewavesflatwaterflatwater in easterly windbeginner lessons with school supportwindsurf crossoverwingfoil
Classic Rügen surf-school and campsite spot with long windsurf history under the Thiewaii name. It is established and social around the school/camping meadow, but still more local/watersports-focused than a resort beach.

Rescue

VHF 16+49 421 53687-0

The school on site keeps a motorboat and uses it to collect its own students when they drift; nothing covers independent riders. Sea rescue is the DGzRS, free of charge and funded entirely by donations, reached on VHF 16 or channel 70 by DSC, or by phone on +49 421 53687-0 to the coordination centre in Bremen.
The nearest lifeboat stations on Rügen are Glowe, Sassnitz and Breege, all on the far side of the island from Moenchgut, so help from the water is not quick.

Launch

Access is from the campsite and Surf-Oase area between Thiessow and Klein Zicker, on the west side of the land tongue. Rig on the small meadow directly by the beach, about 20 m from the water, and stay inside the signed kite and windsurf zone. The beach itself is open at any hour.Paid parking is under 50 m away at the campsite, with a second paid car park about 250 m away at the edge of the village; toilets, showers and waste disposal are at the campsite.

Hazards riders report 10

  • fish traps northwest of the spot
  • onshore surf in southwest wind
  • offshore east wind
  • Fish traps/reusen are set 200-300 m off the beach in summer and should be kept clear.
  • Offshore east wind despite attractive flatwater.
  • Onshore to side-onshore southwest wind can create shorebreak and up to about 2 m waves.
  • Marked stone wall on the left side has current/suction; keep 20-30 m off it.
  • Current risk near Thiessower Haken if riding too far south.
  • Sea grass, especially with southwest wind; fit a weed fin.
  • Wind shadow in the northern part in northwest wind.
Rules & access
2026: the signed kite and windsurf zone on the beach is the boundary to work to, and it is set locally rather than by an ordinance you can look up; no published map or bylaw covering Thiessow was found. The water-safety signage came out of a local project set up by ProBoarding, Sail&Surf, the Gemeinde Thiessow, WSA Stralsund and the Biosphaerenreservat Suedost-Ruegen. Parts of the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern coast are closed to watersports, some year-round and some only at certain times, and reed belts and Roehricht zones are to be given a wide berth everywhere. Ask the school where this year's boundary runs.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Rig on the small meadow by the beach, about 20 m from the water, and stay inside the signed kite and windsurf zone; ask the school where the boundary runs this year.
  • East wind is offshore however flat the water looks; ride it only if you can get back upwind on your own.
  • Stay clear of the fish traps set 200-300 m off the beach in summer, northwest of the spot.
  • Give the marked stone wall on the left 20-30 m; it pulls a suction current.
  • Fit a weed fin in a southwest; the sea grass comes in thick.
  • Do not push south toward Thiessower Haken; there is current down there.

Getting there

Airport

Berlin Brandenburg (BER), Hamburg (HAM) and Rostock-Laage (RLG) are the practical options; older directions still quote Berlin Schönefeld/Tegel and Hamburg distances.

Route

From Stralsund follow the B96 toward Bergen, then the B196 toward the Ostseebäder (Göhren/Baabe) and continue through Thiessow toward Klein Zicker; park at the campsite car park by Klein Zicker.

Camping/caravan and motorhome pitches are available directly at the Surf-Oase/Surfoase Mönchgut area; Thiessow/Klein Zicker and nearby Mönchgut villages have holiday accommodation.

No-wind days

SUP, windsurfing, catamaran sailing and school/rental activities are offered locally; Mönchgut/Rügen also has beaches, cycling, hiking and trips to nearby Göhren, Sellin and the southeast Rügen coast.
