The spot

Wiek sits on the eastern shore of the Wieker Bodden, a sheltered Baltic lagoon on Rügen's Wittow peninsula, and the reason to come is the standing depth.

Figures for the shallow zone run from 500 m by 2 km to 700 m by 4 km of sandy bottom, with separate entries for kites and windsurfers.

Wind

West, southwest and northwest are the working directions. East is the day you drive to Dranske, because from this shore an easterly blows straight offshore across the lagoon.

Water conditions

The water is flat to lightly choppy, with short chop only farther out near the fairway, so it pays off for beginners, freeriders, freestyle practice and anyone crossing over from a wing or a windsurf board; wave riders should go to the open Rügen coast instead.

Hazards

The catch list is short and real: stones you cannot see, sea grass in summer, school traffic in July and August, and protected water you must not drift into.

When Fehmarn is packed or Cape Arkona is too raw, this is the lagoon that still works.

West is the reference direction, with SW and NW both working; SSW through NNW all deliver. East is the one to avoid: from the Wiek shore an easterly blows straight offshore across the lagoon, which is why local schools move easterly days to Dranske on the far side of the peninsula.

Average strength

No station mean is published for the lagoon. The nearest long record, Cape Arkona on the open coast 11 km north, averages 14 kt with 20 kt gusts from WSW over June 1999 to July 2026; a model-derived figure for Juliusruh, closer and more sheltered, gives 7 kt WSW.

Typical strength

No long-term wind record exists for the lagoon itself. Cape Arkona, 11 km north on the open coast, averages 11.8-16.3 kt by month across 1999-2026 observations, lightest in July and August, strongest December to February, and reads 4 Bft or more on 61% of all readings. Inside the sheltered Bodden expect noticeably less than that, and the water stays flat well past the point where the open coast turns unpleasant.

Reliable, and smoother in W to SW than the same system feels on the open coast, because the peninsulas take the edge off it. No long-term wind statistics exist for the Wiek station itself, so that is a description, not a measurement.

Spring to early June and late August through October are the strong stretches. Summer still blows, and Cape Arkona up the coast is statistically the windiest place in Germany, but high summer at Wiek means courses on the water and a full car park.

Rescue

No public rescue station, lifeguard or standby boat covers this stretch of the Bodden. What exists is school supervision during courses. The standing depth is forgiving, but west and southwest wind blows off the eastern shore across open water, so a line or bar failure leaves you drifting into the middle of the lagoon; the standing local advice is not to ride alone and to go out only on gear you trust.

Launch

Rig on the grass meadow by the Surf & Kite Camp Wiek and the campsite on Boddenstraße, on the eastern shoreline, and walk in at the kite entry. The windsurf entry sits about 150 m along the shore and is not yours.

Wind

West and southwest wind blows off the launch shore across open water: a gear failure means drifting into the middle of the Bodden, and riding alone is discouraged.
Depth runs out about 300 m from the bank for long fins and foils; the carry lengthens after a long offshore blow.

2026: use the separated kite and windsurf entries at the camp shoreline, about 150 m apart. No paid kite permit and no Wiek-specific seasonal closure is published.

Protected zones

2026: the water around the Bug peninsula, west and north of the buoyed Wiek fairway, is a national-park core zone closed to all craft under the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern national-park navigation ordinance, with only a 50 m-wide strip north of that fairway excepted and 50 m either side of the Hiddensee fairway; a long downwind run across the Bodden can put you inside it.

National park restrictions

2026: inside the Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft national park kitesurfing is prohibited except in the approved Suhrendorf area, and the red and green water zones carry their own navigation restrictions.

Check the on-site boundary signs and map before leaving the marked spot area.

Come early in July and August, and use the kite entry at the camp shoreline rather than the windsurf entry about 150 m along; parking and the grass rigging meadow fill up.
Wear surf shoes. Unmarked stones sit in the shallow stretch where beginners walk and body-drag.
Put a weed fin on any directional or freeride board from July to October.
On easterly days drive to Dranske instead. From the Wiek shore an easterly is straight offshore.
Check the water level before you rig; after a long blow the carry out to rideable depth, about 300 m for long fins and foils, gets longer.
Do not use a downwinder across the Bodden as a plan B. West and north of the buoyed fairway is closed national-park water around the Bug.

Getting there

Airport

Rostock-Laage Airport (RLG) is the regional airport; Berlin Brandenburg (BER) and Hamburg (HAM) are larger international alternatives farther away.

Route

By car: Wiek is on the Wittow peninsula in northern Rügen, and you come in on Boddenstraße to the campsite and harbour area, where the parking is paid. Public transport to the launch is unconfirmed.

No-wind days

The schools rent SUPs. From Wiek harbour the seasonal ferry to Hiddensee crosses to Vitte in about one hour on the 2026 summer timetable, and cycling on Wittow and the rest of Rügen fills a flat day.
