Coyote Point is a kite and windsurf launch inside Coyote Point Recreation Area in San Mateo, on San Francisco Bay just south of SFO. Flat-to-choppy bay water, W through NW the usable directions, and the thermal that people come for runs April through September. The launch is the problem here, not the water.
It is constrained and shared with pedestrians, beachgoers and windsurfers, so the protocol is tight: pump in the kite inflation area, set your lines on the grass, keep them off the pedestrian path, and go straight out once the kite is up. It is marked an expert-only launch in one place and intermediate-and-expert elsewhere; treat it as advanced.
High tide makes the ramp slippery and the launch more technical, which is the thing to plan the session around. Navigation pylons sit downwind and there are stones on the beach and in the water. Average wind is put at 20 knots, but no usable range has been published for the site.

Typical strength

The thermal season averages 20 knots from April through September, and that average is what the sailable days sit around rather than far above. No minimum-to-maximum range has been published for the launch itself.

Thermal and frontal wind both work. The April-September thermal is the reason people ride here.
The thermal runs April through September and averages 20 knots; some listings start the good season in May instead. Frontal wind adds days outside that window. Park gates matter as much as the forecast: closing is 20:00 from April to Labor Day and as early as 17:00 in midwinter, so the evening window shrinks fast after summer.

The quiver, in words

Nothing spot-specific is published. Against the 20-knot April-to-September average a 75-85 kg rider lands on about 9 m, dropping to 7-8 m on the strongest afternoons and going up to 11-12 m on a light early-season day. Indicative, derived from the season average rather than from local reporting.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Standing depth

Flat-to-chop riding, with more beach to work with at low tide. No standing-depth range is confirmed.

Tides

High tide makes the launch ramp slippery and kite launching more hazardous, so this is a tide-sensitive spot rather than a tide-independent one. A big high tide with strong wind is the combination to stay off.

Temperature

16°C summer · 11°C winter

Wetsuit

Normal suit or a shorty in summer, normal in spring and fall, thick wetsuit in winter.

San Francisco Bay water, flat to choppy. The launch area has a ramp and beach users, with navigation pylons downwind.

Your level

It is marked an expert-only launch in one place and intermediate-and-expert elsewhere. This record treats the launch as advanced, even though competent intermediates do ride there.

Rescue

No lifeguard, no kite rescue boat. The watersports shop inside the park is the only staffed presence at the launch, and only during its opening hours; otherwise it is 911, park staff and self-rescue. Local practice carries the weight instead: assisted launch and landing, no self-launching, and a minimum of 200 ft off the shore once you are riding.

Launch

Use only the designated kite launch area. Pump in the kite inflation area, set your lines within the grass area, keep them off the pedestrian path, and move to the water as soon as the kite is up.

Rules & access
2026: Coyote is an expert-only kite launch. Pump only in the kite inflation area, set your lines on the grass and keep them off the pedestrian path, and launch only in the designated launch area with the landing zone and the ramp clear. Self-launching is discouraged, so get help. Have the board upwind and ready before you go down the ramp, keep the kite low and go straight to the water. Once out, stay at least 200 ft from shore and keep two line lengths from anyone on the beach; beachgoers and swimmers always have right of way. Starboard tack has priority and the downwind rider has right of way on the same tack. Land with assistance and roll your lines up immediately. Gates open at 08:00 daily; closing is 20:00 April through Labor Day, 19:00 in late March and from Labor Day to 11 October, 18:00 from 12 October to 1 November and in early March, and 17:00 from 2 November through February. Vehicle entry is 5 USD, an annual county pass 72 USD, and a shop visit of 45 minutes or less gets validated free parking.

Rider tips

  • Treat the launch as advanced even if bay chop does not worry you.
  • Get an assisted launch and landing; self-launching is discouraged here.
  • Have the board at the water before you launch, keep the kite low and go straight out.
  • Skip the session when a big high tide lands with strong wind, because the ramp turns slippery.
  • Stay at least 200 ft off the shore once you are riding, and know where the navigation pylons are downwind.
  • Ask a local for the current launch and landing protocol before you rig.
  • Check the gate closing time before an evening session: 20:00 in summer, 17:00 in midwinter, and the gate does not wait for you.
  • Bring 5 USD for the gate, or buy the 72 USD annual pass if you will be here all season.
