The spot

Gizzeria Lido runs on a NW thermal, called Ponente-Maestrale here, that builds from midday or early afternoon and turns up almost daily in a spring or summer high.

Spots and facilities

The kite hub is Pesce e Anguille and Hang Loose Beach, on the Gulf of Sant'Eufemia. This is open sea, not a lagoon: flat to choppy water in the thermal, and a real shorebreak with wind swell when a disturbed Maestrale comes through.

Conditions and access

Depth arrives fast off the main beaches, so plan a body-drag rather than a walk-in, and take a school or a rescue setup for the first sessions. It takes lessons and freeride happily, and it is above all foil and race ground: Formula Kite and wingfoil events keep coming back to Hang Loose.

Caution and logistics

Scirocco is the day to watch, because it turns side-off and gustier while the flatter water tempts you further out. Lamezia Terme airport sits a few kilometres up the road, which makes this an easy southern Italian trip to organise. Come April to September; in July and August the sand in front of the schools is packed, and the quieter launches are north or south of it.

A 75-85 kg rider on a twin-tip sits on 11-12 m for the standard 13-20 knot thermal, drops to 9-10 m once it tops out near 20, and takes 13-14 m for the early build and the light end of the range. Disturbed westerly and Maestrale days that reach 25-35 knots are 7-8 m weather, and often not worth rigging at all because of the shorebreak that comes with them.

Two or three metres of wading at the main beaches and the bottom is gone; treat the whole launch as deep water and plan a body-drag, not a walk-in. The drop-off is not uniform along the several kilometres of shore, and a more gradual slope is reported at some points, so where you walk in decides how quickly you lose your feet.The bay itself is enormous and shelves out slowly further offshore, which is why the return to the beach is rarely the problem.

Rescue

A concession running a bathing establishment must staff a lifeguard service through the bathing season and its opening hours, declared to the maritime authority at least 15 days before they start, with more lifeguards required as the frontage widens. That is cover for bathers, not a kite chase boat.

Recovery is the kite centres' own business: a rescue rubber boat and a sea transfer sit among the beach services, and at Hang Loose Beach the sea recovery goes to the school's own students rather than to passing riders, so ask before you count on it.

The beach runs long and wide from Gizzeria Lido to Pesce e Anguille, with kite centres and beach clubs on it and parking behind. Hang Loose Beach is a beach sports park of 12,500-15,000 sq m.Cool Bay is a long sand and pebble stretch with schools, storage, changing rooms, rescue, hot food and beach parking, and beds within walking distance.

2025: Ordinanza di sicurezza balneare 32/2025, signed 29 May 2025 for the Vibo Valentia maritime district, which explicitly covers Gizzeria and Lamezia Terme, sets the bathing season from the third week of May to the third week of September, with local authorities free to shift the start or end by one week without changing the total length. 2025: between 08:00 and 20:00 the first 150 m from the shoreline off beaches is reserved for bathers, and navigation, stopping and mooring of any craft, sail or motor, explicitly including surf, windsurf and kitesurf, is forbidden inside it; only rowing boats, canoes, pedalos, SUP and rescue or police craft are exempt.

Landing corridors

2025: the way across that strip is a landing corridor, at least 10 m wide, run perpendicular to the shore out to the outer edge of the bathing water, bounded by yellow buoys spaced 20 m apart and joined by floating lines, with white flags on the outermost pair marking the seaward mouth and a multilingual sign at the beach end. 2025: inside a corridor you move at very slow speed on a course perpendicular to the beach, one craft per direction with right of way to the one heading out; swimming, free-diving, anchoring, mooring and games are forbidden inside it and near its mouth, and kitesurfers or windsurfers and motor craft may not use the same corridor at the same time. 2025: corridors reserved for kitesurf and windsurf may be installed where needed at a concession holder's request or on the municipality's own initiative.

Bathing restrictions

2025: bathing is separately forbidden within 100 m of harbour entrances, inside corridors, over anchorages and at river, canal and outfall mouths. 2015: under ordinance 27/2015, cited and kept in force by the bathing ordinance, all craft including sailboards must navigate more than 200 m off the shoreline where there are beaches in the Vibo Valentia compartment.

Current regulations

2023: kitesurf itself is disciplined by Capitaneria di Porto di Vibo Valentia ordinance 36/2023 of 8 June 2023 on recreational navigation and the use of pleasure craft, which the bathing ordinance points to by QR code and which was not retrieved here. A 2026 replacement bathing ordinance for Vibo Valentia was not located, so check on arrival whether 32/2025 has been superseded.

Rig for the thermal rather than the model: on good summer days the sea breeze here adds knots to the forecast.
Launch a little north of the Hang Loose crowd on the standard NW thermal; on Scirocco the Hang Loose stretch beats the launches further south.
Carry a big summer kite and a small one: the normal thermal runs 11-20 kt and disturbed days go well past it.
Treat Scirocco and SE days as intermediate-and-up, because the wind comes in side-off and gusty.
Read the current Comune and Capitaneria notices on arrival to see which kite and windsurf corridors are actually in place this season.
In the bathing season cross the first 150 m only inside a marked corridor, perpendicular to the beach, and never while a motor boat is using it.
Pack booties: sand and small gravel with bigger stones along the waterline, and a long walk back up the beach is a real possibility on a crowded day.
